Translation: QIHM Writer’s Letter to Fans

June 10, 2012 · joonni

The main writer of “Queen In-Hyun’s Man” left this letter in JHW’s DC Gall on June 9, 2012.

Hello. This is writer Song Jae Jung…^^

I am writing this letter to let you know that I received your presents well.

We divided the pretty mug cups among the three writers and enjoyed the witty newspaper.

We had a lot of time until the final broadcast because we handed in the final script a little earlier than usual.

We writers were reading up on people’s comments. You didn’t know that, did you? ^^

We didn’t expect much while doing a cable drama but because of everyone’s support,

and the weekly growing response,

we wanted to immediately thank everyone.

But we thought that maybe the writers’ appearance

would be too much of a trial..(?!) for those who were avoiding spoilers, so we waited until the final broadcast. Hehe.

In addition to our thanks for your passionate support and precious presents,

a few words that we want to say…

In this case of having to purposefully find the channel (refer to note 1) to watch,

the fact that you watched the live broadcast is already a sign of overflowing affection,

and because we know that the one percent rating is extremely high,

the production staff and actors worked hard to not disappoint.

To Director Kim Byung Soo, we hope that he receives the praise he deserves for his hard work,

“Number one in romantic comedies”…I think this falls a little short. Isn’t there a better nickname?^^)

Filming, editing, music, action, lights, art direction, etc…

Everyone on the production staff worked passionately with their exceptional skills to fill in the holes of the script,

and they raised the quality level of the drama.

To excitedly wait for the broadcast like a viewer,

and the fact that I could do that as a writer…I want people to know that this is a blessing.

Thank you so much to the production staff.

And to the actors (refer to note 2)…

From the beginning, when we writers were conceptualizing the drama, we were determined to write a fantasy,

a truly wonderful man, and a lovably woman

with 100% hearts of love.

So the real fantasy in this drama is not the talisman or the time-slip

but the absolutely perfect man named Kim Boong-Do.

Boong-Do and Hee-Jin were purposefully written as so from the beginning,

but through the direction and actors, they became more charming and received  overflowing love from everyone.

To people who were enchanted by this fantastical 100% absolutely perfect man…

어제 오늘 인터넷의 화두(?!)로 떠오르신 두 배우분들.., ^^;

The two actors who were the topic of conversation all over the internet yesterday and today…^^;

While I am a “free” (refer to note 3) person, the reason I am writing about this is because

I think there may be people who are perplexed or unwelcoming.

Even if the script, direction, or acting skill is good,

if there is no true and sincere attitude, a character will not be able to come alive.

The Boong-Do and Hee-Jin you guys love, their absolute perfection came alive because of

Ji Hyun Woo and Yoo In Na’s true and sincere attitude to the characters.

And although I do not personally know those two very well,

Actors definitely put first (Joonni’s note: I put the emphasis here) their passion to honestly and realistically portray the characters,

and if, as “free” people, feelings developed after they assimilated with the characters’ hearts, I think it is a natural thing.

This is something that a writer can definitely see when they look at drama made from their own script.

That order of events is something that can’t be changed.

So if the actors, because their own personal reasons,

find that their characters are spoiled or discolored in other people’s eyes (refer to note 4), I think they would be sad.

The love between Boong-Do and Hee-Jin

is our gift to people who might be finding life a little boring-

a short fantasy of a midsummer night’s dream.

Like a fairytale book from your childhood that you take out from a dusty bookcase

and will always transport you to a fantasy world…

While our lives, the people around us, and the even the land we stand on change…

Whatever the time, whatever the situation,

as soon as you press the play button, we hope that it takes you back to May 2012, the time when

“The World’s Most Beautiful Woman” and “Player” loved, and the time when you watched them with delight.

Thank you for your passionate support.

Please be happy~^^

Writer Song Jae Jung.

Note 1: The writer is referring the fact that this is a cable channel for which you have to pay for and won’t be available to anyone, anywhere.

Note 2: I use “actors” to refer to both actors and actresses.

Note 3: What the writer means by “free” person is someone who isn’t bogged down by rules and expectation from society, and acknowledges people’s freedom to express what they feel. So the writer is implying that while she doesn’t want to comment upon what other people are free to express, she is because she wants to clarify a few things.

Note 4: The writer wasn’t very clear here, I thought, so translating it was hard. So what I think she is trying to say is that while it may seem to people that JHW or YIN are just working off their emotions from their characters, (and she acknowledges that this is may be true…), it doesn’t mean that their feelings are any less real since they approached their characters with a true and sincere attitude. So she doesn’t want people to now look the at the characters of BD and HJ and see JHW or YIN’s personal feelings because the actors tried very hard to make the characters themselves come alive. Their feelings were for the characters and story first, they are professionals after all, and whatever their personal feelings for each other, that came second.

Comment:

I hope my final note explained a lot because my interpretation of what the writer is trying to say expresses how I feel about RL celebrity couples and shipping.

Whenever I watch a drama and find that the actors are having incredible chemistry on screen, of course I get excited when I look at BTS cuts or photos. But I think, “They look good together,” rather than “They should be together” or “They are already together.” I consciously don’t participate in RL-shipping conversations during a drama. I feel like if I add my voice to the fervent conversation that often grows out of control, I would be hurting these actors that I have come to appreciate for their skill. I want to appreciate what the actors do as actors, and not think that their personal feelings are what is creating the chemistry. I am aware that of course personal feelings will have some kind of effect on their acting, but I also want to acknowledge the fact that actors are capable also of separating what they do as a job and what they feel personally.

I know everyone’s reason and level of attachment to RL-shipping is varied and I appreciated it all. So I will translate, and deliver news when and how in a way that I know may not satisfy some shipping hearts but in a way I believe is not shoving words and thoughts onto actors and situations I have no real knowledge of. You see, I sometimes hate the Korean media and netizens, and just don’t feel that they deserve to be translated and spread around. I want to translate facts, not speculations.

And as always, please respect the time and effort that went into translating this. :D Please credit and link to this blog when you take out.

WOW! Joonni… *bowing* You are truly amazing! Thank you for your gift :) I can’t believe writer Song really made an effort to leave such a long message! She poured her heart into this show and I’m glad to hear Korean fans sent gifts to writers as well!
BTW why did she leave this message in JHW’s DC gall? Because it was JHW fans who sent them those gifts?

    • joonni

hmm, I don’t know if it was JHW’s fans that sent those gifts. Probably so. I think it was his DC gall that was most active in talking about the drama.

Joonni, interesting that the link was from Lee Pyeong Kang DC gallery. I was surprised. So it must be JHW’s fans that sent those gifts.
It seem Queen In-hyun’s man DC gall has just been opened recently. Saw some posts over there with “Innam gall” pic.

Thanks for the translation and sharing your views. Always love reading them. Yes sometimes I do feel weird with RL shipping cause they are real people and all but regardless they did an amazing job porarying BD and HJs feelings in the drama.

Thank you for the careful translation, Joonni! As well as your kind thoughts on the finale fallout.

Wow, Joonni, zillion thanks. This is beyond amazing, I didn’t expect this gift. I didn’t know writer-nim made and effort to leave such a meaningful letter to fans. Thank you writers (I didn’t know there were three writers for this, of course every drama has a main writer but I thought only one more writer’s assistant).

Thanks again, Joonni, for bringing us this heartwarming gift.

Run to translate in my language ^^ of course, I always credit and link back to your blog :)

Since the word to express ALL my gratitude and admiration seems do not exist I only can say THANK YOU JOONNI! Thanks for your translation of that beautiful and touching letter! And thanks for your comment which made me come to my senses and which will make me curb my shipper’s tongue from now on, because I felt that my shipping passion was really going out of control… It just this awesome drama and HJ/BD and YIN/JHW who drove me completely crazy. I’m not looking for excuses, I know the fault of being too excited and crossing sometime the borders of tact is mine. Now I hope I will become the old myself who not speculate about someone’s private life and “situations I have no real knowledge of”. I will not anymore “undress” them publically interpreting their body language and theorizing about their hearts! I hope they will excuse my indelicacy because I only wanted them to be happy and it fell out that I was seeing that happiness for them of being in love with each other coz there are both so charming and charismatic and look so good together… Ji Hyun Woo and Yoo In Na, you have all my love, support and respect as actors and persons whenever happens! And thank you Joonni one more time!

Oh Elena, I completely understand how you feel about shipping. I squeal like a little girl too and feel all those compulsions myself. I speculate inside my head too. :D Remaining somewhat outwardly calm is just own little personal way of respecting actors and trying to keep the drama and the actors’ real lives separate.

What I meant was that I will try to faithfully, and with balance, translate what comes out of the actors’ own mouth, instead of translating the news out of third parties.

        June 10, 2012 Reply

I used to keep my speculations inside my head too… but this time… Perhaps it’s a side effect of being taught all my life to be reserved and keeping all my feelings inside showing to the world only my virtues, manners and dignity while the crazy-wild myself just waited to grab her chance to show her appearance and to blow out my reason? :) ) Anyhow that I wanted to say in my previous post is that I totally support your position!

Hi Jooni, I thought of requesting you to translate this, and scolded myself for being too greedy. Here you are with the actual translation. Too good. What can I say, but thanks again. I believe you have captured what the writer wanted to remind fans.
    1) The story is a fantasy.
    2) KBD is too perfect to be real.
    3) Love the drama, but leave the actors alone.
    Ok, message received writer-nim.

This was a meaningful and thoughtful letter. I really appreciate the translation– thank you.

The writer did a great job creating a “perfect man” for the 21st century woman: A man of high virtue, intelligence, strength and determination, and grace. JHW did a wonderful job bringing him to life.

What a thoughtful and interesting letter. That is wonderful they took the time and realize how much the fans really appreciated everything they did. Also recognized the great job that JHW and YIN did convincing us of their great romance!

Joonni ~ ❤ I’m so grateful for you. Sincerely. Your recaps were an absolute life-saver while the show was airing…and now translations of songs and letters are like a bonus gift with a big red bow!

I hope it’s not to greedy of me to hope that you will continue to cover this topic as well as new shows. You have a faithful reader from here on out. Thank you SO much.

p.s. do you, or anyone else here, know how to write a note directly to Writer-Song?
…since she wrote: “We writers were reading up on people’s comments. You didn’t know that, did you? ^^” …..I can’t help but think she/they would be thrilled to know that even though Korean cable ratings were 1-ish percent….that, in fact, there were hundreds upon hundreds of International viewers enthralled by their work. We just don’t get counted in the ratings system.

A link or address would be awesome. Of course, I would be writing in English, so maybe it wouldn’t get read. (sigh)….what about a *collective* appreciation letter?

**Just an idea — if we had a way to direct the writer to your blog, your skills could introduce a Thank You post …then the rest of us (gathered from Soompi, Dramabeans etc…) could reply under it and thereby *collectively* make our happiness/thankfulness known.

    Too much to ask? :)

I think the Korean drama folks ARE aware of Dramabeans, as they are also aware of Dramafever.

They prolly don’t read our words as much as the Korean fans, as it is just easier to read their own language , and the Korean fans actually “pay the bills” by buying advertised products, and we just, well, benefit from it…
I wonder if all the dough nuts I ate during K2H counted?
      LOL
Should I help out and buy a $45,000 Audi? It is a pretty car:

Hi @jomo ~ re: the Korean fans actually “pay the bills” by buying advertised products, and we just, well, benefit from it…

yup. Which makes me wonder why there’s no one clever enough to figure out that the International market will actually buy English subbed shows, especially when fan groups pretty much do that FOR THEM, for free.

I think it’s almost universal that artists/writers suffer from worry about the popularity of their work…their baby/s. Even if they’re not getting paid by International fans..it’s got to be a huge ego lift to know we’re here and we want MORE! Perhaps someday …someone will actually include English sub DVD’s as part of the original marketing plan…and not as an afterthought.

Any clue as to what this writer’s next project is? I’m definitely anticipating.

I hope they care. I wonder what the actual viewing numbers – downloads, live stream, streaming and DVD sales are outside of Korea, or even outside of Asia? It’s a big world out there.

      • joonni
        June 10, 2012 Reply

I don’t think the payout is enough (money-wise) for the production team to invest in Eng sub and provide them in DVD’s. That’s why they don’t seem to do it despite the international audience.

I have no idea what the writer will do next. Hopefully she will do another project within a year.

btw,,if we connected directly to the writer…wat it would be.. writer must be just read our comment and discussion wat the best way to “makbong” every scene…if we , as a part of writer nim suggestion, of way to make a “scene” ..wat it would be.. i think we will know wat happen next..
writer-nim keeps our curiosity high as we watch the drama, and guess wat happen next ..their really must be have hard discussiion to every part of the “scene” that would be happen ..

And man, she is right about the perfect man!
I so don’t care that he isn’t real. Why do I need an authentic man in my drama ? I see authentic men at work, in my neighborhood, at stores all the time. I live with one.
We need to be able to fantasize over one we will never meet, right?
    ESCAPISM rocks.
I am almost grateful now that we didn’t get a shower scene, or even a full on abs shot.
I don’t my heart could have taken it.

      • shl
        June 10, 2012 Reply

@ Madsu – Hmm . . . I think we need some ‘authentic’ elements in fantasy, so we are able to fantasise that we can be there. I’m not going into the whole phone/ talisman debate; what I mean is, for example, Boong-do is human and he lives in a time we can understand. Compare this to, for example, a fantasy completely populated by faries, or an alien world with no human figure. We can surely enjoy these worlds, and fantasise about them, but it’s harder for us to participate in the fantasy, to join in, or to think – I could be there!
@ Jomo – you’re right, escapism rocks! That’s why we’re all addicted to kdramas, right?

      • joonni
        June 10, 2012 Reply

A level of “authenticity” allows escapism, doesn’t it? Otherwise, how do we connect with what we are seeing? Even if the story was about aliens, if we can’t identify with them on a human level, the story would have have failed.

      • madsu
        June 11, 2012 Reply

I would call it believability rather than authenticity. There is no way to authenticate Spielberg’s ET, but we do love him to bits, don’t we? I cannot believe that Boong Do would handle his life on the run the way they showed in ep 16, so I can’t connect with that. My personal opinion of course.

I’m glad that I recognized the real fantasy of this drama is KBD and not really the time-slip halfway through the drama hehe!! You rock, writer-nim! This drama is one of the best fairy tales written for adults of all time!

Hi hi, thanks Joonni for the wonderful translation :) I actually teared reading writer Song’s letter. It’s filled with sincerity and it’s very heartwarming. QIHM is the best drama ever, at least for now, to me. N I’m not sure when it’ll be dethroned in my heart, if ever there is another drama will come along that makes my heart beat faster/skip a beat, makes me smile/giggle like a little girl n turns my life upside down like this wonderful drama does :)
N thank you QIHM fans – this has been a wonderful journey :) Your comments n insights have made me appreciate the drama more.
JHW n YIN have made the script come to life with their wonderful acting. The whole production team has set a mark which will be difficult to surpass – thanks again for this great drama!
I’m looking forward to the 2 extra episodes n until then, let us dwell in this fantasy of the absolutely perfect man named Kim Boong-Do :)

“a short fantasy of a midsummer night’s dream” Very true. It’s like a fairy tale I’ve read from long ago. When I see this drama again in a year, I will remember 2012′s summer and all those feelings it gave me :D (it’s summer here)

Joonni, I totally agree with you~ Unfortunately… I don’t have the energy right now to translate as eloquently as you do so here’s my sharing too~

News about QIHM/JI Hyun Woo in my rudimentary translations:

A translation of his brother’s minihompi entry today:
According to my personal opinion, this is the best piece of work that my brother has done so far. Hyun Woo himself feels that he’s put in more affection and effort in this piece of work than he has for any others.

Because of the constraints of cable tv, the casting of the main female character was very difficult; the producer and Hyun Woo (after the pre-production meeting) personally went around sending scripts in efforts to cast the main female actress.

Through such twists and turns, such a wonderful piece was made in the end. Please give an applause to all those who had given their best until the very end. Even the last broadcast ?? was emotionally complicated (the (background music helped a lot too hehe)

    At the same time…

The silent-storm of a confession that my brother made honestly as a manly response shocked me as well.

Refer to the individuals themselves if you wish to know about the current state of their relationship. In the light of his current July-enlistment, and the uncertainty for the length of his enrollment, I just want to let those of you who may be worried to know that there is no reason to worry about his lack of communication.

Anyway, please applaud enthusiastically again for all the staff members who put in such great effort to create this awesome piece.

The above is a translation of his brother’s minihompi posting here: http://minihp.cyworld.com/svcs/Image.cy/One/30425750?urlstr=phot&tid=30425750&board_no=22&item_seq=625656238&urlstrsub=phot_short

Translation from Chinese translation of an article: chinese article- http://blog.xuite.net/sosoyo/JHW/61109665; original article- http://news.nate.com/view/20120610n07772

After confessing to Yoo In Na on July 7th, Ji Hyun Woo has cut off communication with his management company for 3 days, not saying a word. As Ji Hyun Woo’s words, not only his fans, but the management agencies of both actors have fallen into panic, that the person who did such an unexpected act has currently “taken a dive” (went into hiding) has only brought confusion/questions.

His agency has expressed on June 10th that since the ripples of his sudden confession grew, he has turned off his cell phone and there is no method to reach him.” “As surprised as his fans may be, Ji Hyun Woo must be having a difficult time… I believe that he wants to sort out his emotions.” “He’s not one to easily say things without thought; I believe his confession was sincere.” “Previously when rumors began of the two actors falling in love came out, neither had made comments about the matter. They did not seem to be dating at the time”

In response to the silence of Ji Hyun Woo who caused this confusion, netizens have said “Confessing when Ji Hyun Woo’s parents and brother was present, it seems like he’s already dating Yoo In Na”—adding pressure to both individuals (Hyun Woo and In Na).

Due to Ji Hyun Woo’s receiving of his July 3rd enlistment, He did not schedule any other activities besides the QIHM activity on June 7th. His agency expressed that “Before enlisting, he has about a month’s time of vacation; before he comes back out, having sort out his emotions, we can only wait.”

Yoo In Na, who had received the surprise confession, has not made any comments about Hi Hyun Woo during her own radio show.

    __________

All in all, I think we’d be better fans by giving Ji Hyun Woo encouragement as he goes through this obviously intense time period– sorting out his emotions and figuring out what’s reel and what’s real… instead of the “PLEASE DATE YOO IN NA” comments… (no offense to anyone in particular). IMO i think those comments do more harm then good when he really needs to sort those emotions out HIMSELF… Let’s be mature and caring fans by refraining from those comments. The personal well-being of our beloved actors is always first, right?

    Sorry if I’m being a party-pooper >.<;;

      @Hartofseeker,

Thank you for posting this. I don’t mind if they have a real-life relationship, and I don’t mind if they don’t, because I believe it’s their personal affair. Whether to commit to a relationship or not is an emotionally stressful decision in itself, and having to face external pressure surely isn’t helpful. I think you’re right, fans should just let them be to sort it out themselves.

Thanks especially for the translation of JHW’s brother’s comments – I was worrying about the effect on him, especially with the news that he could not be contacted. I felt sad, for him, that what he probably thought was a sincere and honest gesture would end up causing so much ‘trouble’ for them both.

His brother’s right on another count – I think this is JHW’s best work to date too!

      right!
      plus…
*there was no evil chaebol mom/dad/grandma etc. (the complete lack of evil elders was so refreshing)

      * no back hugs which resulted in pregnancy to the next week. (if the average kdramas are to be believed—back hugs are the equivalent to a weekend in Las Vegas)

      * characters remained consistent from beginning to end. (there was no sudden herky-jerky metamorphosis from ass-to-wonder-man that is SOOOOO common in kdrama-land)

It seems that Korean drama writers/PDs latch onto a particular genre for a season or two….and EVERYONE does the same type of show.
      i.e.
      1) Chaebols
      2) Saguek fusion
      3) Time Travel

…..wouldn’t it be wonderful if writer Song has introduced the next season’s archtype character?….THE GOOD GUY.

I love good guys. I wish there were more of them in K-dramas these days. I don’t need the extreme of the complete jerk who turns into a noble idiot. I just want a hero with a good head on his shoulders!

exactly… and why does there always have to be a love triangle or quadrangle? I’ve watched too many perfectly workable dramas that imploded once the lame 3rd or 4th love interest appeared. Wild Romance is the most recent example of crash and burn.

I love good guys too but lets not forget about the bad guys (i love movies and drama with smart evil guys lol). I do believe that there’s no black or white… just different shades of gray haha — Evil guys should be cool… very good at being evil haha and be the baddest evil of them ALL!!!

    Hi Joonni,

Thank you for translating this letter! I think it was lovely of writer Song to express her thoughts about this drama, and the people involved. Thank you also for your explanatory notes, especially note 4, which I think was spot-on in explaining what the writer was saying – don’t overlay the drama with the actors’ relationship and thereby take away from their hard work and professionalism; for the duration of the drama, they *are* the characters that portray. Can’t help but think that those involved in the production of QIHM must have been close, given that she’s clearly showing both her love for the drama and the people involved here.

    Thank you again.

QIHM will forever be in my heart…especially our sexy but gentlemanly “Player” Kim Boong Do and our bubbly “World’s Most Beautiful Woman” Choi Hee Jin! This epic drama will be remembered even after 300 years!

I just wanted to clairfy who sents those present. It’s from the fans, true, but I wanted to say it’s from the fans who love the drama itself. I don’t know if you know about DC, but there are all different kinds of gallery in DC. People gather together under one Drama gallery if DC make one for it. However, DC did not make one for QIHM. People who want to get together and to talk about start gathering under Lee Pyung Kang Galllery, which JHW was in, but the gallery was kinda abanded, because it was aired long time ago. Of course, JHW fans are there also, and YIN fans as well. BTW, JHW has his own gallery in DC. I hope my explanation cleared the misunderstading. P.S. I love your recap of QIHM. I really enjoyed alot. ^^

    Hi joonni,

thanks a lot for your wonderful recaps it’s was very addictif like the drama itself :)
and thanks for this translation, it confirm me that the writer is a real good one and from now on, i will keep waiting her next work impatiently.

For the “love decaration” in public, it breaks my heart, Ji Hyun Woo was so cute and spontaneous like a real lover can be (how to not fall for him), although I think he must bite his fingers himself now, or not :)

But there is so much pressure by now, i feel sad for them because if the feelings are the same for both of them, how to live happily their love story, maybe like the french sentence says ” Pour vivre heureux vivons cachés” but one thing is sure it’s the benediction of every fans of QHM, and i hope they could live their story without nobody for disturb them like everybody would like for their love story.

And if it’s not the case and if he was rejected :(
well ! I can say he has the choice among the thousand fans he has from now on, all ready to sacrifice for his hapiness ;)

I also think that fiction and reality are two different things and I will agree with everyone saying that these two Actors are beautiful and their chemistry is no longer any doubt, although I think we are obliged to ‘put a bit of sincerity to bring this magic part, that’s why I want to thank from the bottom of my heart for all the happiness they’ve given us and wish them to find this happiness “together or separate”, it doesn’t matter, they deserve it.

Thanks again joonni it was a pleasure to read you, and also to read the comments to the fans of QHM, and all have the same feeling ” a wonderful drama very addictif ” i hope we could see more dramas like this.

Ps: sorry for my poor english, and i hope i have translate my feelings for ” Queen inhyun’s man”

Thanks for all you do for us. I think JHW is to be commended for his open declaration of love and the courage to stand by his words. I think it says alot about the character of this young man. Ladies, can we in our wildest dreams imagine a man standing on stage in front of the world saying he loves us. I don’t know about you but that is a heart stopping moment. May everyone just find happiness and continued success.

As for JHW I think the man has amazing courage what ever the outcome…he has set the romantic bar in film and real life. I hope Ji Hyun Woo and Yoo In Na find success and happiness in all of there endeavor’s. That the fan’s and management give these young actor’s the love and support needed to continue on with their life and careers.

Vingle.net has really shown alot about QIHM and JHW is all over YouTube not only with QIHM but his latest album…youtube put in Ji Hyun Woo Baby Elephant. Have you seen him in the movie Mr. Idol? Yeah, I’m sure they both are great actor/actress. The sparks might not start from the beginning. So they perhaps they fall each other unconsciously, and realize their feeling after the drama’s end. So I won’t doubt their acting skills ;)

As for the writer, director, and all the crew, they all great people! And I’m glad that even they’re not expecting much from cable drama, but still doing their best, I hope more people will come and acknowledge this drama. Spread the love! xD

I used to work on movie locations here in the USA. It’s surreal..your own private little planet. When the director calls, “that’s a wrap,” you are joyous and so very sad too. How to explain the bond that is formed and then it is over. I hope that if it is true love it will grow but then again maybe it was just a passionate time in the twilight zone. I think there are millions of woman who would like to have that much skinship time with JHW….how could you not fall for that hunky man.WOW!
