Ji Hyun Woo- Singer and Actor

Ji Hyun Woo

Born: 1984 November 29

Family: Parents and Older Brother

Height and Weight: 187cm and 75kg

Blood Type: B

Education: Sung Kyun Kwan University, Department of Performing Arts

Hobby: Watching movies

Skill: Playing Guitar

Ji Hyun is the type of man that I instinctively gravitate towards so he has always been on my radar. His stature and smile is so my type. Unfortunately, none of his older acting projects were captivating for me. I’m so happy that he found “Queen In-Hyun’s Man” because his smile and height really shines in the drama.

Ji Hyun Woo debuted in 2004 as an actor but he is also a guitarist and singer. He was the guitarist for a band called “The Nuts” and he released his first solo album in 2011. Titled “Crescendo,” it consists of songs written by Ji Hyun Woo himself. It was produced by his older brother. Truthfully, I can’t say that Ji Hyun Woo is a great singer but his voice is unaffected and straightforward. That holds its own charm.

I have found some clips of him performing to promote his solo album, and I translated the interview in which he reveals a lot of background information about himself. The clips are from a late-night Korean music show hosted by composer/singer, Yoo Hee-Yeol, and the show is called, “Yoo Hee-Yeol’s Sketchbook.”

Translation:

YHY: You’re height! Can you stand for a bit?

YHY: You must be 206cm?! You’re really tall!

YHY: Welcome, Ji Hyun Woo.

JHW: Hello, everyone. I’m Ji Hyun Woo.

YHY: Your performance (referring to “Sexy Back”)…What has happened to you? What song was it?

JHW: It’s Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back.”

YHY: It’s the first time I’ve seen anyone pose so much holding a guitar. What is that performance, where you look back and forth? Did you see the male audience member’s face? It looked like he was saying, “Wow, that is hard to watch.” It was a face full of jealousy. I didn’t know you had that in you.

JHW: I thought I always showed everyone the same type of performance so I wanted to show a different type today.

YHY: It’s was awesome. Please, let’s applaud him.

YHY: It’s your first time appearing on “Sketchbook.”

JHw: Yes, it’s my first time.

YHY: How do you feel?

JHW: I always came on these type of shows with “The Nuts.” It’s my first time coming out with my own solo album, the first time in the ten years since by debut, so I’m feeling good.

YHY: Long time ago, I appeared as a guest on JHW’s radio talk show. Do you remember?

JHW: Of course. You guys may not know but YHY is like “Jang Dong Gun” or “Won Bin” among radio talk show writers.

YHY: Because it’s radio.

JHW: He is really popular. The writers try really hard to have him as a guest. So we waited for him to release an album and you appeared as a guest on my show.

YHY: I was so surprised when I saw you for the first time that time. He was so handsome, seeing him personally. You look even better in person than on screen.

JHW: Ahhh…it is so.

YHY: Right now, you are more known as an actor who can play the guitar well but you were a guitarist first, weren’t you?

JHW: Yes, in the group called “Moonchild.” I wasn’t part of the band. I was a session guitarist. I think my first broadcast show was here in this studio. I sat over there, and even though I wasn’t part of the band, I kept on thinking about what I would say if I was every interviewed.

YHY: When did you start playing the guitar.

JYJ: First grade of elementary school.

YHY: You played the guitar today. Do you still play the guitar often these days?

JHW: I don’t play/practice as much as I used to. After I turned twenty, I put more effort in acting. I only compose songs with my guitar.

YHY: Doesn’t music help when you are dating?

JHW: When I’m dating? Yes, it does.

YHY: Like what?

JHW: Like when I think this is a critical point in the relationship but nothing’s happening, I write a song and give it to her.

YHY: Do you sing a song to her over the phone.

JHW: Yes.

YHY: Like, “This is a song for you.”

JHW: Yes, I suppose so.

YHY: So from now on, it’s your room. I’m the girlfriend. “Ring ring. Hello?

JHW: Hi Hee-Yeol. What are you doing?

YHY: I’m just hanging. What are you wearing right now?

JHW: I’m just wearing comfortable clothes

YHY: I was just worried you might get a cold. I just wanted to know if you were dressed warmly. Why’d you call?

JHW: I have something I want to say.

YHY: What?

JHW: Why are you in such a hurry today?

YHY: Because I’m hungry.

JHW: I wanted to sing you a song.

YHY: Why so suddenly? Alright, what kind of song?

JHW: I made this song while thinking about you. (Plays and sings)

Lyrics to song: The Hee-Yeol I know is too bright. Too beautiful. From the first time I saw you, I fell in love. Sometimes like a father; sometimes like a friend; sometimes like a child, I’ll act cute in front of you. I love you, anyway you are. Thank you. I’ll always be by your side.

YHY: Hyun Woo, don’t ever makes calls like this! Haha, really, the song is good! What did the girl say when you sang like this for her? She really likes it, right?

JHW: She’s at a loss of words

YHY: She must have hung up.

JHW: I just hang up too

YHY: Because it’s embarrassing.

JHW: Exactly.

YHY: (To the audience) Don’t you think it would be great to receive this kind of present?

YHY: You’re still acting these days. What are you goals in regards to music?

JHW: I have released “Crescendo,” and a single. I composed and wrote the lyrics, and even designed the album. It was really fun. I think I will continue to do that from now on.

YHY: We’ll look forward to it. Finally, I’ll ask a couple of questions to conclude this talk. Don’t think to hard, just answer quickly and instinctively. First, what is music to Ji Hyun Woo?

JHW: A friend?

YHY: What is acting to Ji Hyun Woo?

JHW: A way to make a living. (Laughs)

YHY: What is the guitar to Ji Hyun Woo?

JHW: A friend? A longtime lover?

YHY: Lastly, what are older women to you? (Ji Hyun Woo has famously played against older women in many of his acting roles. That’s why he is asked this question.)

JHW: THey have made me the person I am now.

YHY: My goodness, that answer makes you imagine a lot of things. Alright, I hope you you continue to grow as an actor and musician with your own distinct color. Please introduce your next song.

JHW: It’s a song from my album, called “Baby Elephant.” Do you know the theme song to the baby elephant? I thought of that song while writing this. While I am dating, I tend to nag a lot. This song tells why I nagged, because of so and so.

YHY: That’s cute. You wrote the lyrics yourself?

JHW: Yes, composed and wrote the lyrics. Males might hate this song.

YHY: No, many males, while watching you, will…hate it. Alright, we’ll listen to the song and say goodbye to Ji Hyun Woo. Thank you!

JHW: Thank you!

I knew him only from QIHM, and never see his older dramas, but wow isn’t his face looks like Kim Nam Gil (without the mustache)? They gives off almost the same vibe too when not acting, a bit shy-ish if there’s such word >.<'.
He's doing very good in QIHM, Best wishes for JHW, hope he get more good projects after this!

Totally agree with the vibe thing. I’ve fallen so hard with Kim Nam-Gil in QSD and now Ji Hyun-Woo in QIHM. They gives out the same vibe.. and the most important thing is they don’t have that typical ‘girl-looking’ male korean look. Swooning over them~

Thanks 4 the videos joonni:) I had seen two of his previous dramas, but didn’t find him charming enough at that point of time…maybe its his character..ah, I dunno!! QIM is his best project so far and am loving it!…I found this video in youtube…its from invincible youth2..wherein he’s waking SISTAR’s Bora up by singing her own song…I found it endearing!! I mean who wouldn’t like a Boongdo alarm??;)

P.S. Wow, so him saying he studied in Sungkyungkwan Univ. wasn’t only for the drama after all. He studied there, too! Awesome awesome guy. 😉

I was worried about the hotness level of that particular header. I’m sorry about the combustion. I hope you weren’t near paper. 🙂

Heh, I’ve been keeping tabs on JHW for a while now so I’ve seen most of these vids already. There were plenty more a few years back when The Nuts (I’m a big fan of the band, have all their albums and I used to listen to them quite obsessively…. well, still do periodically, LOL!) was still active. His voice is not the strongest but it suits certain kind of songs very well. ‘One Eyed Fish’ is one of my all time favourites. ^^ He is a pretty good guitarist though.

I’m really glad that he has finally landed a role in a good drama with a PD that seems to be able to bring out something extra from him as I think he’s been rather typecast thus far. I’ve watched several of the dramas and films he’s done and even though his dramas have not been all that mindbending, I’ve enjoyed most of them. To varying degree. Being quite contrary it’s not surprising that my favourite two are the ones that usually get the least love; ‘Over the Rainbow’ and ‘The Birth of the Rich’. *g*

I ran from “The Birth of the Rich” when I saw the trailer, and I don’t particularly like Lee Bo Young. Should I give it a try for Ji Hyun Woo?

      May 15, 2012
      • Timescout #

I don’t remember the trailer but it was probably a lot worse than the drama actually was. Yeah, there was some stuff bordering on OTT but most of it was quite enjoyable. I liked it enough to even make a little pimpost @ LJ way back when. I think Lee Bo Young was pretty good in BOTR and uri JHW has chemistry with just about anyone, Nam Gong Min included, LOL! Actually, I found couple of fanmade MVs that sort of show what I liked the most. 🙂

There’s one for the 2nd leads (LOVED Lee Si Young’s character, she was a total hoot) as well:
