Letters of Love: To Hee-Jin and Boong-Do

QIHM

Dearest Hee-Jin,

You go girl!

Out of many K-drama heroines, you are one of the most courageous. Some may call it impulsiveness, shamelessness, or even stupidity, but I call it courage. Not many can do what you do- help a time-traveling Joseon scholar, grab that same man for a kiss and lie that it’s a way to say “goodbye,” and run out of an award ceremony to chase that man who everyone thinks is a dream.

I’m so glad you don’t scream, Hee-Jin, except maybe at innocent taxi drivers. I’m so tired of leading ladies that yell and bicker with their leading men. These ladies let their tempers get the best of them and create more drama. Drama seems to find you because you’re too nice, but you don’t create them.

Thank you for showing us that functional love exists.  If we are to believe other K-dramas, love is only portrayed through bickering and a tug-of-war of feelings. You, however, wear your heart on your sleeve and display it boldly. You don’t hold back your affections because of pride (although you seem to have some useless pride regarding a few written languages). You allow your love to shine and light up the world. How wonderful does the world look to you?

I love how you fight your own battles, not because you want to be a martyr, but because you want to take care of yourself. You want to take responsibility for your own life and I have nothing but respect for that.

Stay strong, Hee-Jin, because it looks like there is some heartache up ahead. I trust in your courage and great capacity for love.

From your admirer,

Joonni

P.S. Is Boong-Do a good kisser? Oh, and where do you get your shoes?

Dearest Boong-Do,

I love you.

That is all.

Okay, I lied. I have so much more to say.

Boong-Do, you are my hero. Your intelligence and capability earn my respect. You traveled 300 years into the future- yet, you didn’t panic. Luck may have been on your side by sending you Hee-Jin and a Chinese language South Korea tour book, but you learned about the modern world mostly by yourself. You even knew when Hee-Jin was lying to you about that “goodbye” ritual and “curry rice.” You even knew how to give yourself a perfect haircut!

You’re also a strong fighter and a gentle lover. You must have nine lives because the number of times you almost died….It would give most people Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but you almost seem to enjoy your frequent brushes with death. I know they bring you to Hee-Jin but I do worry.

Can you always smile? Your smile lights up the world and your eyes express so much. I know you can see Hee-Jin melting in front of your eyes but you haven’t seen the rest of your fans around the world. They lie as goo in front of their computers and only manage to pull themselves together to just watch you smile again.

Do I sound like I want you for myself? If I do, please forgive me. I love you best when you’re with Hee-Jin. I love you best when you smile at her, hold her in your arms, and kiss her. I love you best when you say, “To take real responsibility is to be by your side, always.”

I know you are worried these days because you don’t know during which time you should live in. You have to choose between staying in a place where your life is already laid out in front of you but everyone knows you, or deciding to stay with your love in a world where you have no origins, family, or friends. I can’t give you any advice regarding your decision. You already know that both choices have consequences and unforeseen effects. I know you will choose wisely and live that life with dignity and responsibility.

On a less serious note, do you work out? Because those shoulders…..

From your biggest fan,

Joonni

P.S. Don’t let Hee-Jin see this letter. She’ll probably start to pout and imagine strange things about you.

oh yes! DITTO! on everything you wrote!
If I have a crush on BD then I also have a girl-crush on HJ! She’s probably the only heroine in a Korean drama that I totally like and would love to be besties with! 🙂
I totally am glad that she’s not a screaming, shrill, whiny, quick-tempered, foolish heroine who is nonetheless supposed to be irresistible to the hero.
There have been others that I also admired (like HA from K2H) but HJ feels like she could be a girl you could meet today somewhere. She’s so genuine and earnest and kind.
And I am also so glad that BD was written as a gentleman, smart, think before he acts kind of guy who does not scream at the heroine or insult her or treat her like dirt and yet the heroine supposedly still finds him irresistible. (It just stretches my imagination too far sometimes)
I guess I just love them as a couple!
only 4 more episodes to go, it’s too short! I am already anticipating how bad the withdrawal is going to be…

Thank you Joonni for your recaps (which feeds my passion to know what is going on in the raws) and your lovely letter here. It is just as fun reading your writing as watching the drama. Maybe more so.

I know this is joonni.com but this site feels more and more like:
    a) obsessaboutqueeninhyunsman.com
    b) gushabouttheawesomekimboongdo.com
    and my personal favorite…
    c) squealandmeltovergloriousliplocks.com

Oh what I wouldn’t give to be in Hee-Jin’s shoes, to feel Kim Boong-Do’s arms around me… and those kisses! *squeee* Just thinking about the (im)possibility of it makes me shiver with delight. :))

    P.S.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for the fast and awesome recaps! Knowing you’ll post recaps soon after each airing keeps me (and many, many more rabid non-Korean QIHM fans) sane… that is until the subbed episodes come out and I squeal and swoon with crazy, manic happiness. 😀

These letters got me started on a very unsettling line of thought.

What is HJ to KBD? Is she the strangely forward and bumbling fairy from the modern world who stole his heart, or is she the In Hyun that he can LET himself love?

I am going back to the scene where time stops for him at Jeju airport while he is looking at her on screen dressed as In Hyun. After that he frankly admits that that was the first time he found her attractive. The car kiss was also when she was dressed as the Queen and he put his heart into it. Even when he lost his memory, he remembers that he must hurry so he can meet Queen In Hyun.Did I get it wrong, or did he call her In Hyun in between the tippie toe kisses?

He also instructed HJ that the actual In Hyun’s quality is that she never loses her poise, whatever the situation.
KBD went into In Hyun’s personal chamber twice, both times she was in her inner ware (that white thing), and there was no scrambling to get dressed or anything. Is that normal? Are they that comfortable with each other? If that is the case, which In Hyun is he REALLY in love with?

Aaahhhh be still my jelly beans, stop this incessant rattling.

Well, I don’t think he was being very honest anyway. You don’t run after a girl and kiss her good bye if you think she is ugly. 😉

I don’t know why it has taken me awhile to find this site even though I have heard of your name elsewhere but it’s better late than never. Dramabeans is #1 in my heart for all things related to Korean pop culture but in such a short time (found you when I googled QIHM ep 11) your site have stolen the #2 spot and that is saying a LOT! That is how awesome you are. You are a talented writer and I feel really connected to you through your amazing writings. You really know how to express your feelings well and I agree with everything you say. This letter is so charming, sweet, and so true. I am truly a devoted fan now:D

P.S. BD and HJ have definitely stolen my heart. They know that time separates them and they don’t waste precious time bickering and doing stupid things. Keep the kissing and hugging coming, please! They are the best kdrama couple for me and I know a LOT. They feel real to me and I love them:)

Like britener, I also found Scattered Joonni this way. Dramabeans got me interested in Queen In-hyun’s Man. But they were recapping QIHM at a slower rate, and that led me to Joonni’s site.

      Dear Joonni,

I don’t know if you plan to blog after QIHM. but if you do. I’ll be reading.

      Your fan,

Me 3. Actually a flu got me watching RTP. Was horrified with the show and started watching QIHM and got hooked. Watching raws is something I have never done before this. Found Joonni’s site and set up tent here. Totally a fan of your work.

Will we ever have another couple as sweet as this one???

      May 27, 2012
      • britener #

I’m going to be optimistic and hope so. It’s strange to say that I find this couple rare in a krama:( but it seems true huh? I’m tired of the prince type leading man and the over bubbly leading lady. These two got it right from the start. They understand each other and I love that! Also, I hate the whole hand grabbing in kdrama but the way BD does is so hot esp. when it leads to more hand holding or lips locking.

I’m almost 30 and I feel like a teenage girl watching them. I’m so giddy and full of giggles everytime they interact with each other. Even just readingabout them brings me the greatest joy. I’m keeping up with three recappers on this story and even watching it raw which is unusual for me. I want to say I’m borderline obsessed over this couple, but I would be lying to myself. I am totally, utterly obsessed with them….hehe:D

Hi there, this is my first time commenting here but this post makes it impossible for me to remain silent. What you said about our hero and heroine cannot be any truer, especially Hee-jin. I cannot recall the last time I saw a K-drama in which the heroine was as brave as her. She might not be the smartest girl but since she held on to Boong-do’s wrist and gave him the goodbye kiss in the library’s elevator, I know I am in LOVE with this impulsive girl :)) And then the air-plane declaration, the award ceremony runaway, she totally deserves Boong-do! Together they are PERFECT! Thanks for the awesome posts, I’m so glad I found your site!

    Dear Jooni,

Like everyone else here I LOVE these letters. Is there a way we can send these letters to all the networks so that the drama writers see them?!?! They have to know that there are plenty of fans out there who would be fine without the usual bickering pairing–the I hate you but now I love you duos. I am also tired of the the OTPs that have to spend most of the drama apart and only get together in the last episode, sometimes in the last five minutes. Most women (like Hee Jin) like nice men. Notice I said men not boys. We might be initially attracted to the bad boy character, but we are busy people, too, and do not have time to have to take care of them as if they were children. They cause too much drama. Boong-do is really the ideal not some cold-hearted Darcy wannabe chaebol. And Hee-Jin’s honesty? I do not often see a k-drama heroine with whom I’d want to be friends in each episode (Ha Ji Won’s character in K2H and Park Ji Hin’s characters in Fermentation/Kimchi family are two that stick out). I’ve liked lots of other female leads, but there are often whole sections of shows where I am either cringing from embarassment or too annoyed with them that I know I probably would avoid their calls (if we were friends) for a couple of weeks. This character is genuine and faithful and you know that she means what she says–“of course” that is a way to say goodbye; I’d say goodbye to Boog-do like that, too:)

So, copy these letters and send multiple copies to every writers’ union in Korea. Fans have spoken!

    May 29, 2012
    • daniela #

Park Ji Hin’s characters in Fermentation – she is my favorite so far.

      May 29, 2012
      • joonni #

Ah, Fermentation Family. Was recommended that by Thundie. It’s on the impossibly long list of to-be-watched dramas.

        May 29, 2012
    • britener #

Haha….nicely put! I couldn’t agree with you more:) You got me lol when you said, “….we are busy people, too, and do not have time to have to take care of them as if they were children. They cause too much drama.” Hiliarious!
