Reel to Real? Translation of JHW’s confession and YIN’s reaction
So I spend eight hours off the internet, focusing completely on the final recap. I hit “publish” and finally go searching for reactions to the episode, since I have tried to remain completely spoiler free since last night.
Then I see this. (Transcribing on request)
Ji Hyun Woo confessing to Yoo In Na. In public. In front of hundreds of people. In a digital age where this this will spread like a wildfire burning through the internet cables and the hearts of fans everywhere.
Ji Hyun Woo: (Something that was cut out here in the audio)…. I received a present. From Yoo InNa-shi, the thing I am so grateful for, is that…You know the scene in episode 14 where I confess? The scene when I am crying. In the script direction, it said that I should just cry a single tear because I feel like I have become an orphan. At that time, it was really hard to cry. I had to cry within a short time frame. So I tried to gather my emotions and called for a time out. I was sitting on the bench by myself when suddenly, InNa-shi sat down next to me and put an earphone in my ear. The ost of our drama. All of a sudden at that moment, tears just started to fall. Uh..So…(Ji Hyun Woo gives a pause that indicates he is saying something that is hard to say)… Yes…I…yes..I want to be truthful.
(Audience shouts. So do I. I want to know if Yoo InNa had continued to sit next to him and shared the earphone.)
Ji Hyun Woo: The charm of our drama is ‘men boong,’ right? (Audience laughs) Right? There is ‘men boong’ in every episode. The thing that will make you (referring to the audience)’men boong’ today is…I love InNa-shi.
(Men boong is a current Korean slang that is the shortened phrase for ‘men-tal-boong-gaeh’ which is a combination of the English word ‘mental’ and the Korean word ‘boong-gaeh.’ Boong-gaeh means collapse, or breakdown, so ‘men-tal-boong-gaeh’ means mental breakdown. It is a way of describing so much shock, your brain shuts down. And shut down it has for me.)
Yoo InNa’s reaction:
The host has been talking when the audio finally cuts in.
Host to InNa: I’m not saying that you guys are/will date but you can say something, right?
InNa: Uhm..you see…I had a lot of crying scenes and I listened to the ost then. Isn’t the ost very good? (The audience replies yes.) Very…so at that time…
Host: We aren’t curious about that. Since he said he loved you, you should reply or you should tell us if you are dating or not, since the fans are curious.
InNa: It’s not that..I think I need to talk to him after this finishes…(“We need to talk about…”) with what kind of heart he would say something like this. (InNa giggles and turns to JHW.) (“We need to talk about…”) what this person is saying right now…(The host starts to talk but InNa adds…)This is really a ‘men boong’ drama.
She passes mic to Kim Jin Woo. I think Kim Jin Woo is trying to help out InNa. He says, “I wore those earphones too. Didn’t the director wears those earphones also?:
Okay, my two cents.
From what I can tell, JHW seems to be really confessing to YIN. Those pauses are so loaded with meaning. YIN seems geniunely surprised but I don’t think she sounds unhappy or upset about the sudden confession. She definitely is surprised and is trying to diffuse the situation, but she doesn’t sound exactly reluctant.
I don’t RL-ship during a drama but when an OTP do get together in real life, I am happy for them. Since we don’t know if this couple is dating or will date, I am content to just let these two work it out and keep my feelings from bubbling over so that if they don’t end up dating, I won’t be too disappointed.
For now, I’m just gonna take my Hee-Jin and Boong-Do.

This drama is such a high for us viewers, I can only imagine what it must have felt like during production. I sincerely hope that what they feel is real and not shadows of the fantasy world we have all been in for the past few months.
I never ship actors either, but when people get together for the right reasons, just give them their space and wish them good luck.

Ballsy move, JHW. So ballsy that they had to cancel the afterparty because it was too chaotic and everyone including the cast and crew and management was shocked. ARGH. I don’t know if they are going to be together. I HOPE they will. This is actually a couple that people would want together haha, which is so different from those that get antis!

It was such a wildly romantic script, with so many hours of them staring intently at each other, kissing, saying loving words, how can it NOT seep over into real life? They are both single, if they like each other, they should spend time together to see if there are real feelings after the drama’s glow fades.
Stateside – a headline for a week or two – then the couple gets on with their dating. I wish it could be the same for them, instead of having the spotlight on them for being human with human feelings.
And as I have said elsewhere, why couldn’t they have CAKE?

Ah…thanks for your input! I’m in my mid-twenties and old enough to know that most drama lovers don’t end up being real lovers no matter how much chemistry they have. But wow, this is the first time in a drama where when you’re watching them on screen, you can’t tell if its real or fake. And now we know it’s real. He’s honestly really brave to do this in front of his/her fans, and I even heard his family was there. Korean fans can be harsh, and korean management companies can be strict about dating. Plus, he’s supposedly going to do his military service soon. He didn’t care about any of that and just let it all out. It was incredibly cute and I hope something does happen between them because it seems like he is sincere about liking her.

I think he’s at that age where he’s required to do his military service. I read on another article where he said he was going to do his military service soon. It sucks, and they won’t have much time together before he goes if they do end up dating!
Thank you Joonni, for shedding some light on this. Like you, I don’t ship actors/actresses when they work together on a project, as I think real life is very different from life during a drama/film shooting. As Jomo has said, the actors/actresses spend a lot of time together, gaze at each other, usually look good with their make-up and lighting that accentuate their features in a positive way and there is skinship, in some instances, a lot of it.
As I have said, I don’t ship couples (main couples, secondary ones) from dramas or movies. I will however say that watching JHW and YIN together, especially the BTS shots, I felt that in this instance, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if they dated and tried to see where this could go. They just seemed to genuinely like each other and like each other’s company. I have seen JHW in some interviews and variety shows, and he seemed like a very sweet, kind and romantic man. And no, I am not swooning or putting him on a pedestal, he just seemed to genuinely be that way (and I am usually good at reading people and at reading their body language). He’s attractive, talented, hardworking, humble, and he seems to have his head screwed on right and he loves his mother and has a great relationship with her (that’s usually a good thing if a man has a good relationship with his mother).
I would say the same things about YIN: she is smart, very attractive, talented, hard working and seems humble as well. I haven’t seen her as much in interviews as I have JHW, so my perception of her is not as pronounced as the one I have of JHW. I do think that she is a good actress, that much I would say, and she did act lovingly towards JHW in some of the BTS shots and pictures I have seen. All of this to say that I would totally understand if they ended up liking each other and if they were already dating before today, as some rumors are suggesting.
I am like you Joonni, in that I am just waiting to see how this will play out, meaning the confession that happened today and the repercussions of it. I do find it sad and regrettable however, that the after party was canceled, especially since there was already cake. I am with Jomo on this one: the cake was already there, why not eat it? Cake is good, right?
I also think that what JHW did was brave, because he made something personal (a confession), public. Maybe he should have thought about how YIN would take it or wondered if it would be a gesture that she would appreciate. She probably felt put on the spot (and she was). Well, I guess we know how JHW feels for sure and we don’t have to guess and wonder any more. I hope that JHW doesn’t feel bad that the event was canceled and that it won’t have negative repercussions for him.

Wow! thought the acting was real all along. I find it interesting how they treat the actors in Korea. That management and fans destroy the lives of stars because they disagree with their love interest or partner they choose to marry. I think it took amazing courage for JHW to confess his feelings. Maybe his thinking was that while everything was warm and fuzzy because of QIHM he would make his annoucement and just maybe the fans would not rip them to shreds. I hope they at least get the chance to see if this is real or reel. May you have a life full of blessings and happiness. This is one fan who supports you in all of your endeavor’s.

I find it mighty sweet and romantic. But you are right. so long they are given the chance to see where their relationship can go, it’s ok since they are both single and available. What I find interesting is that few have picked up on the fact he said he “loves” her, not just “likes” her. The difference is the same in English, between “like” and “love.” I’m glad that Joonni’s translation is as “love.”

Yes, and there’s such a major difference between “like” and “love.” People just don’t go around saying that they “love” someone like that. That’s serious stuff! If he’d said “like,” it’d be cute. It’d be equivalent of saying that she was his ideal type and he was crushing on her. But LOVE? Woah.
When I read the news first in English, I thought for sure he said “like” because, at least, that leaves room for interpretation. But then I heard actually watched the video and was completely shocked he actually used “love.” That’s..just..wow.

Ok…I’m not sure if I’m really back…but Ji Hyun Woo oppa left me speechless there! I wouldn’t blame Yoo In Na unnie to answer the way she did…in fact if I was her…I’d collapse!!!
Before I have the habit of shipping drama couples especially if they have good chemistry onscreen. But sadly, none of those couplings became true. Those delusions only broke my heart thousands of times already so I stopped.
For JHW oppa and YIN unnie’s case, I already saw the overflowing chemistry between them even from the very beginning. However, I kept saying to myself that…NO! DON’T! You’ll just end up like before again. Trust me…it was hard but nevertheless…I sort of succeeded.
Then suddenly…I came across a certain article from ygfamily blog (forgot the exact name…sorry) about this. I didn’t believe at first but when I came upon your blog joonni for posting additional comments to episode 16, I saw this!
Upon hearing JHW oppa (after a couple of replays), he seems really sincere towards YIN unnie for him to confess in public like that…with the stammering and the pauses and all.
