Photo Spam: Ji Hyun Woo in “Mr. Idol” (Warning: Lots of pics. Lots.)

Mr. Idol

This movie requires no brain power whatsoever. It is basically a patchwork of different scenes just thrown together. There is no character development and the plot is so cliche, a five-year-old could have written it. Basically someone in the movie industry wanted to cash in on the idol trend so he hired some slipshot writer, coerced veteran actors to star in it, threw in some eye candy, and hoped for the best. You can’t even be angry at this movie because it’s just so surface level. The only redeeming point about this movie is of course, Ji Hyun Woo, and the sprinkling of comedy. I actually enjoyed the comedy. Ji Hyun Woo had some good deadpan delivery and there was some physical humor. I don’t think any of the actors took this project too seriously, which is good, but they did their job with what they were given. I don’t think I can blame them for this bad movie.

Mr. Idol

Anyway, a brief summary. Ji Hyun Woo plays Lee Yoo Jin who was originally going to debut as a rock band member under Star Music Entertainment some years ago. Unfortunately, their music was deemed unprofitable and the band was dropped from the agency. Lee Yoo Jin then worked odd jobs here and there to support his family of a father, sister, and her two children, one of which is constantly ill. After a coincidental meeting, he is scouted by Park Ye Jin, the producer of the idol group, Mr. Children, and he joins the group as the lead vocal. Nothing goes well for this group and they start from the bottom, holding performances at hospitals and other charity institutions. Gradually they gain a following and are able to top the charts.

Unfortunately, Star Music Entertainment releases a falsely edited video interview of Lee Yoo Jin bashing idols during his audition and Mr. Children goes bust. But just as Park Ye Jin is about to leave the country, giving up on Mr. Children for good, Lee Yoo Jin hears a message she recorded for him and decides to give one last performance at an end of the year music show. Things end successfully for Mr. Children and they disband. It is alluded to at the end of the film that Lee Yoo Jin finally gets to do his band music. Hurrah.

Now for the fun. Here’s the photo spam. Organized by editions. Watch out for some snark and fangirling.

The Plaid Edition– I love Ji Hyun Woo in plaid and jeans. I think it’s my favorite look on him.

He speaks Chinese in this scene because he is working as a tour guide. Adorable.

    JHW: Too skinny
JHW: Too beautiful in guyliner for my sanity
JHW: Dancing in the T – homina homina

      • It is a very fast film. It won’t hurt you…
        But he was so uninspired.
The character was pretty not interesting.
It IS good for comparing what JHW does with a bad director/script, vs what he can do with an outstanding director/script.

And the pretty. So much pretty.β™₯

        LOL. No β˜‚ Zone.
Can you imagine, though, if you were sharing an umbrella with a man that tall and you are as small as YIN? The rain would get all over you if he holds it.

        Sorry…what were you saying?
I have been staring up at JHW for the past 12 hours as I stand sopping but so happy though not under the β˜‚ with him.

Love all the pic especially him in hospital pj and sweatshirt dancing *gulp*
About the headstand statement, I think it’s copying from his earlier drama Over the Rainbow where Kim Ok Bin asked him to do (folded)handstand by the tree in ep 1.

(Oh, we are, sweetie. We really, really are.)

And the dancing in a white tank! I don’t know how many times I’ve stared at the .gif on tumblr. And reblogged it.

LOL. I remember – it was an interview with Ji Hyu Woo, Jay Park, and the older guy and girl – where JHW was talking about how he had to do all these things for “idol training” like the headstand. And then the interviewer turned to Jay and was like, “Do idols actually train like this?” and Jay answered “…nope. Not at all.” LOL. Ridiculous, is right. However the movie did prepare an undeniable amount of eyecandy. ^_^ Always, always a good thing.

    June 18, 2012

I remember that interview too. I saw the interview before the movie so when I was watching the movie, I burst out laughing at the scene.

LOL. I recently finished watching Mr. Idol and told my friend that the character development was lacking. In fact, I’m not even sure if JHW could be considered the main character. Perhaps if you go by number of lines in the movie. Maybe they filmed it in two weeks. It was an easy watch and, yes, quite forgettable. The song is catchy. Too bad they couldn’t come up with more than one song. They have at least 3 guys who can sing. I don’t know anything about the rapper guy, so I can’t comment on his ability.

    June 18, 2012
    • joonni #

The song is catchy but really not contemporary idol. More like late 90s, early millenium idol. The sound of it just didn’t fit.

      June 18, 2012
  8. shl #

I watched Mr Idol on YouTube (thank you subbers and uploaders!) and I was sadly disappointed because there was NO SHIRTLESS SCENE which the posters seemed to imply would be present. I know I’ve said this many times before on other sites, but I haven’t gotten over the disappointment yet. Humph.

There also wasn’t much going on plot-wise or character development-wise, and I definitely got the feeling that it was, as you put it, ‘a patchwork of scenes put together’. As I mentioned on DB, I felt JHW was sadly miscast because he was so obviously older and taller than his band-mates, there was no way this could be a real idol group. Plus he didn’t really get a chance to ‘act’ (no character development), or to sing! I don’t know if it’s actually him singing in the movie, but he is not listed on the OST. That was a real crime.

But there certainly was plenty of eye candy 😎 Thanks much, Joonni, for reminding us of some of the best scenes (i.e. any scene with JHW). The movie was easy on the eyes and brain – and I have lost count of the number of times I’ve replayed that scene where JHW practices his dance moves . . . maybe I’ll go check it out again.

    June 18, 2012
    • joonni #

I think Jang Seo Won is older than JHW by two years. Yes, most of them was miscast. Who planned this thing?
I think Park Ye Jin can act so I was surprised at how she portrayed her character. I’m completely blaming it on the writer.

      June 18, 2012
  9. Maybelline comment made me laugh so hard that I woke up my roommate. I’ll put a blame on you πŸ˜€

HA! I’m so far away. Go ahead, blame all you want.

      June 18, 2012
  10. Wait, was there supposed to be an actual PLOT to this movie? I’m shocked. I only watched to see Hyun Woo’s abs, that’s it. (and yes, Poor Jay Bum having to stand beside him) That’s just sad. Thank you! Love it!

    June 18, 2012
    • joonni #

And yet, we never got to see really abs. Sigh…

      June 18, 2012

Then it rekindled becoz of Boong Do….but the storyline still sucked….
Now i really want to watch it…just so i can identify Joonni‘s take on: Ji Hyun Woo’s β€œWhy Am I Doing This Movie?” Edition. It seems so appealing now!

Hee! I didn’t know you had this comedic vibe in you Joonni…^^

The “Maybelline” tagline made me laugh at first but it couldn’t match the outburst when I came to the “Don’t Look at Me Like That or I’ll Explode Edition” especially where Jay Park was closing his eyes while saying and I quote β€œIf I don’t look, I won’t fall in love.” So hilarious!!! ROFL

Btw, the Chinese restaurant steaming part…totally caught me off-guard…I was blank for 5 seconds or maybe more…idk but I just kept looking at it…best pose ever! Hee!

  21. The movie…not so much but JHW he is so appealing. This movie peaked my interest and that is how I came across QIHM and the rest is history. This young actor has star quality…he is a complete package. I have watched some of his previous interviews and that incredible sex appeal was there…guess it just took a wonderful script and the love for a beautiful woman…for the rest of the world to notice.

  23. I love me some Ji Hyun Woo’s broad shoulders. That man has just about the perfect shoulder, deltoid, upside down triangular manly silhouette. Yum. I like him cut like this. Loves it. Joonni, me ❀ u! Great to wake up to.

Wow, that was so hilarious! I lol so hard! Your sense of humor is just incredible. I agree with the plaid and jeans. Honestly, I have a weakness with guys in plaid and jeans esp. when they can wear it nicely. The scene when he wore the blue plaid in QIHM was mesmerizing. That was my fav outfit on him EVER. Also, I watched Mr. Idol last month and I hated it. If it wasn’t for JHW, I would’ve given up on watching it. After reading your post, I can actually feel happy thoughts coming when I think of Mr. Idol now rather than what a crappy movie it was. Thanks for curing me of those negative thoughts about the movie πŸ™‚

    Hi Joonni,
You are very funny with such a good sense of humor. Your captions are very funny and I laugh myself off to the ground. I saw this movie before I know him from QIHM. I already draw to his charisma then (not because of the movie). Once again he always pairs with an older female lead. Don’t know why?

    June 19, 2012
    • joonni #

LOL. At this point, if he pairs with a younger woman, it will be strange. He has worked with the actress Nam Sang Min who is the same age as him, though.

Though I was fed up with Park Ye-Jin’s poker face 5 minutes into the movie… Kept my thoughts straight with Ji Hyun-Woo, for whom I watched it…
And it actually had some good solutions, the best being the last scene… c’mon, you were touched by it, weren’t you? ^^

    June 20, 2012
    • joonni #

Hmm…the movie hit all the points necessary to be coherent, even though it lacked a lot of development. Park Ye Jin’s poker face annoyed me too.
I wouldn’t say I was touched by the last scene but I had fun watching the movie.

I think what makes him so adorable is the fact he does not look like one of those plactic princes….but an honest to goodness REAL MAN! Other than those photo’s he seems to have down played being sexy and gone more with the boy next door image. I am willing to adopt him if he needs a home.
