“Nice Guy” Holds First Script Reading

The drama gods heard my prayers. I just complained in my previous post that that we weren’t getting any updates on Nice Guy and now we have news that the cast just held their first script reading. Nice Guy is an upcoming KBS melodrama penned by Lee Kyung Hee (Will It Snow on Christmas) and tells the story of a man named Kang Maru (played by Song Joong Ki) who gave up everything for his girlfriend Han Jae Hee (Park Si Yeon), only to be betrayed by her. He later gets his revenge by using Seo Eun Ki (played by Moon Chae Won), who gets caught up in a “fateful storm-like love.”

The drama is described as a traditional melodrama and I for one am looking forward to this. I’ve loved all of Lee Kyung Hee’s dramas in varying degrees so I’m really excited for this one. I appreciate how this writer portrays love in all its intensity. She shows how powerful and all-consuming love can be, even though most of the time that kind of love leads to a lot of self destruction. Also, this drama is going to air in the fall which is the perfect season for melodramas in South Korea. Autumn is so beautiful there so I hope the cinematography captures that. I haven’t personally seen any of the director’s (Kim Jin Won) other works so I don’t know what to expect. I’ve heard good things about him though so I’m going to let my expectations go up. I’m also incredibly excited about Song Joong Ki in a melodrama lead role. After watching him in Tree With Deep Roots, I know he can pull this off amazingly.

And hmm, Song Joong Ki’s character’s name is “Maru.” For those of you who have watched the drama Can You Hear My Heart will understand how much that name pains me. Bong Maru broke my heart in that drama and it seems that Kang Maru will do the same in this one. Remind me to never name my kid “Maru.”

The first script reading reportedly went very well, with the actors showing good chemistry with each other. Also present at the reading were Lee Kwang Soo, who plays Maru’s best friend Jae Gil, and Lee Yoo Bi who plays Maru’s younger sister Choco. Apparently child actors were also present at the script reading which means that there is going to be childhood part to this drama. Hopefully they are amazing as Nam Ji Hyun and Kim Soo Hyun were in Will It Snow for Christmas.

Nice Guy will air in September, replacing Gaksital for the Wed-Thurs drama time slot.

  1. Thanks for the updates! I like both Song Joong Ki and Moon Chae Won so I’m really anticipating this drama. Though I still think SJK is a little prettier than MCW =)) I’m watching My precious you where SJK plays a younger brother of JHW and their bromance is so cute 🙂

Really, Song Joong Ki is the younger brother of Ji Hyun Woo? Wow, I’ve got to watch this drama! Where are you watching it?

      • I’m watching it here: http://www.gooddrama.net/korean-drama/my-precious-you
It’s a family drama, so neither JHW or SJK are main characters (though JHW is gradually getting more and more screen time… maybe more than a leading guy). But JHW and SJK interaction is precious 😀 JHW keeps calling him “jagiya” or “yeobo” and I saw him smacking SJK’s butt few times 😀 😀

Oh…so that was the drama that JHW oppa was referring to in IY2 when he mentioned that he worked with SJK once. Thanks for sharing! ^^

  5. MCW is gorgeous. I hope they let her do more than weep in this one.
While she is good at that, she was also pretty bad ass in Arrow: The Ultimate Weapon.

Is it a toss up who is prettier – her or SJK, but I am going with…(won’t say)

    • Though MCW is gorgeous for it’s SJK who’s prettier =))
