Eun-soo’s Transformation and Her Love for Young

Part 1-  Eun-soo’s Transformation in Goryeo and Her Choice to Stay.

Eun-soo is a hard character to understand. Is it because of her time-traveling mystery that the writer is so secretive about Eun-soo? We don’t know her history, we don’t know who she really is, and we have no idea where she is going. We are rarely allowed a window into her thoughts and when we get a view into her heart, it comes as a surprise. Eun-soo smiles and laughs, talks and complains. But behind that facade, she cries, fears, and dies….alone. Visions of death and blood haunt her every night but she puts on a bright smile every morning for everyone else, for herself, and for Young.

In a way, she is more of a warrior than Young. She is a survivor to the core. She grabs onto life with all her might. Yet, before she met Young, that life she struggled so hard for in her world had nothing it in. We don’t know if she is just not talking about them but she never mentions her friends or anyone she really loved. Who did she open her heart to in her world? Who did she share her life with? She had boyfriends before but none that she loved with all her heart. Family is an integral part of our lives, yes, and I’m sure Eun-soo’s parents are important to her but after Eun-soo’s parents die of old age, who was going to be by Eun-soo’s side in her world? Who was she going to spend the rest of her life with?

“Knife Wind” (“Faith” OST)

When Eun-soo went to see the fortune-teller, she wanted to know when and how she can meet a man but it wasn’t because she wanted to love him. It was because she needed financial support. Eun-soo didn’t care about love or believe in it. Her life was only for herself and how she can live it comfortably. When Young kept on refusing treatment and she finally exploded at him, she talked about missing her world for the first time. But she only mentioned the apartment she recently bought and how she wanted to use its bathroom and sleep in her own bed. She didn’t mention any friends or anyone waiting for her inside that new home. Despite all the materialistic fulfillment that the apartment provided, Eun-soo’s life was empty. She had nothing…no, she had no one to miss in her world.

Eun-soo confessed to Jang Bin that she wasn’t able to open her heart to anyone in her world. She always thought, “This is too bothersome,” or “No, he’s not the one. This isn’t it.” She refused love or perhaps, she didn’t know what love was. Even in Goryeo, when she knew she missed Young when he wasn’t around and it felt comfortable to be with him, she thought to herself that he couldn’t be the one. But Young was always there, showing her what love is. Together, Young learned to love again and Eun-soo learned to love for the first time in her life.

Eun-soo found love and life in Goryeo. She found a purpose for her medical knowledge and skill. In her world, she had given up general surgery because she was afraid to deal with death but when forced to confront it with Young, she faced death and brought him back to life. She wanted to save Choong-jung because she knew how important the boy was to Young. She healed Yi Sung-gye because she wanted to be useful around the medical ward that housed her. She treated Noguk because she was her friend. Eun-soo always had it in her to be a wonderful doctor but in her world, it was easy to run away. In Young’s world, she couldn’t. Confronted with death nearly every day, she saw how valuable her skill was to save lives. Because she learned to care about the people around her, she couldn’t help but use her knowledge.

Being in Goryeo changed Eun-soo. She has love. She has friends she cares about- the Woodalchi, Gongmin, and Noguk. She actually wants to use her medical knowledge to save lives. She has purpose. Her life is no longer an empty house with nice things in it. She may be sleeping in the army barracks on a hard bed in Goryeo but her life is full of warmth, happiness, people, and love.

When Young argued that she would at least be alive in her world, she said to him, “Yes I will probably live. In my room in the heavenly world, I will just live. Every day talking to people whose faces I don’t recognize, saying things all day long I don’t mean. Then when it’s night, I’m going to come back to an empty room. Every time I sleep, I will call out once- ‘Are you there?’ but I know there won’t be a reply. I will wake up and live another day like that- like I am dead. Don’t you know what living like that is like? You know. Because you are going to do that to.”

In Eun-soo’s mind, she has nothing to go back to in her world. Sure, she will be alive and she will be living each day like any other person. She will smile, she will hang out with friends, she will work, and she will sleep. But Eun-soo has lived that life before and back then, she didn’t see anything wrong with it. After life in Goryeo, however, she can’t bear to go back to a world like that. Taking what she learned from Goryeo and changing her specialty to general surgery in her world, she might come home satisfied every day after saving someone’s life but there will be no one to share that happiness with or anybody to comfort her if a patient dies on the table. She will call out, “Are you there?” but no one will answer her. Her bed will be comfortable but there will be no one lying next to her.

There is a battle inside Eun-soo. She knows how empty her life will be in her world and how crazy it will drive her to not know how Young is doing if she goes back to her world. Is he going to live like the way he used to when Mae-hee died? And now with his hand, what will he have left in the world to do, to be? But she also knows how much it will hurt him to watch her die if she just stays. Either way in Eun-soo’s mind, Young will be devastated and live like the living dead. So Eun-soo decides to be selfish and stay in Goryeo, even though she might die. She’d rather live out the remainder of her life with Young and have someone next to her to hold her in the darkness. She’d rather bet on that small, infinitesimal possibility of making the antibiotic on time in Goryeo so she doesn’t have to leave. She’d rather hold onto that sliver of a chance against death rather than certain life in her world. There is a small hope for a happy ending in Goryeo but certain unhappiness if she returns to her world. Remember I said Eun-soo is a survivor? Before she struggled for a life that was empty but now she is hanging on with all her strength to a life that promises happiness.

Part 2- Love that Transcends Time and Space

“Forever” (“Faith” OST)

Image edited by Softy

We don’t know how Eun-soo left herself those letters. We don’t know how many times Eun-soo traveled back in time to Young. The only thing we know for sure is that there was at least one timeline in which Eun-soo already met Young and fell in love, but their story didn’t end happily. So Eun-soo lived in regret and wished desperately to change the past to save the man that she loved. Was it the power of her love? What was her sacrifice so she could live another lifetime for Young?

After episode sixteen, when “Future” Eun-soo described in her letter that on the day of Deok Heung’s trap for Young, chrysanthemums were blooming by the windowsill, I decided to look and see if there was any symbolic meaning in Korea to the chrysanthemum. In my search, I discovered a famous and beautiful poem that featured the chrysanthemum and as soon I read “Beside a Chrysanthemum,” Eun-soo and her story came to mind. But at that time I was still unsure what Eun-soo’s story was so I just stored the poem away. However, when episode twenty rolled along and I knew for sure that Eun-soo went through a lot to be with Young, this poem came back into my mind again.

English Translation by David McCann, Harvard University

“Beside a Chrysanthemum” by So Chong-ju

To bring one chrysanthemum to flower
The cuckoo has cried since spring.

To bring one chrysanthemum to bloom
Thunder has rolled
Through the black clouds.

Flower, like my sister returning
From distant, youthful byways
Of throat-tight longing
To stand by the mirror:

For your yellow petals to open,
Last night such a frost fell,
And I could not sleep

When you read the poem, you can imagine a man mediating upon the chrysanthemum.  He is reminded of his mature, older sister who has returned home after enduring and persevering through many hardships in her youth. He sees the chrysanthemum, an autumn flower, finally blooming after a cold winter, a busy spring, and a thunderous summer. Like the chrysanthemum, his sister has reach maturity after she survived dejection, hope, and fear. Blooming in autumn, the chrysanthemum is a harvest flower that signifies the fruits of one’s life and labor, cause and effect.

I don’t know if the “Faith” writer, Song Ji-na, chose the chrysanthemum for any particular reason. I can’t claim that the chrysanthemum has any connection to Eun-soo. I was merely curious and this poem just happened to fall in my lap, but when I read it, my mind made that connection and the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to weep. When I think that perhaps, Eun-soo has traveled through time over and over again, lived many lifetimes to be with Young, or that Young and Eun-soo’s love is a product of hundreds of years of waiting and searching, my heart brims over with bittersweet tears.

Here’s to hoping that Young and Eun-soo’s love can finally bloom in the warm sunlight of autumn- a love that has overcome time and space.

An ode to the fearless and beautiful Eun Soo..
Such a character is really hard to imagine in real life..
If she were to exist I would simply hug her and wish all the happiness be bestowed to her…

if all the time travelling theories that have been cropping be true about Eun Soo having time jump numerous time to save young then naturally it make her the most selfless person..

Her growth in character wise has been tremendous and its always her ability to live life FULLY no matter what may come her best strength of survival..

Often i wonder what exactly does she think and process in her head and heart..
Ever the puzzle Yoo Eun Soo..

if I were Choi Young I would never let her go, keeping her close to my heart making sure she doesnt lose her smile..
laughing crying sharing pain and happiness….

The kind of person one can actually look up to and fell yes if she can do so can I..

Eun Soo as a character is a big inspiration to move on,
to fight for whats right and whats yours..

To be un afraid to voice her thoughts..
to live life to the fullest..
to never back down on hope..
To never think about what has past..
To think how to proceed the day with spirit
To feel pain and yet smile with strength
To make sure the heart comes first yet simultaneously stimulate with the brain to listen to the heart..
To make a place for herself where ever she goes..
    To LOVE fully

    and lastly
To fight to love for that LOVE and make him live for the LOVE itselfs

Somewhere down the line I think Eun Soo is the biggest source of inspiration for Choi Young to move on and live,..

and once he calms his heart and opens himself fully,….
lest if she dies..though i hope she wont..

He can atlest be able to live in content with the memories they made and move forward in life…

For ultimately in the end..she came to save him..
and if he breaks at her loss or separation her entire effort and sacrifice will be ruined..

For this ALONE..I wish Choi Young will realise why she is doing what she is doing…
    Its for him YES..

    but its also for HER..

    So that at the end…
It can be for them together…

Welcome back, Classy! Hope you’re feeling better, pledge sister!

What are we going to do if our OTP don’t get each other? I think they would be destroyed, take future ES for instance. She lived and emotionally destroyed life bouncing through time and scared the heck out of present ES to risk her life staying in Goryeo with Young.

I would like to say that if they don’t end up together, Young would take their memories as a lesson and live life to the fullest, but I don’t think that’d be the case. Although he may have learned how to live/love again, I think he’d be even more destroyed than before because what he had with Mae-Hee cannot compare to what he has with ES. He’s more emotionally mature now to handle heartbreak but Eun Soo and his love is more intense as well.

I can’t even handle the thought of daejang returning to his room and ES returning to her officetel, all quiet, dark and alone. Especially in daejang’s room, where they’ve made such warm memories (and no Classy, I am not going to get pervy here…lol).

ES is emotionally stronger than Young, so if future ES is spazzing because they are apart, I don’t even know how Young is going to handle the separation. That’s why ES is so concerned for him.

My poor OTP, I love them to death….please let them have a HEA ending.

I agree he will break..It will be HELL for him all that agreed..

But he needs to buck up..
If she returns; she willl need the strength from his assurance that YES he did live..though not properly but at least he lived..

        But thats hoping too much..
for all i care let them have their space of happiness..
        they need it..

and i am much better..Pam;thanks dear Unnie..
i was happy for the wishes..:)

and Eun Soo will be a beautiful name for you daughter..

Classy, so glad you are feeling better. 🙂 Eun Soo’s character is a huge inspiration, and it is so true….so much is hanging on the line as a result of actions either one of them makes from this point until the finale. Pins and needles….It is such a pretty (but chilly) day here, so I’m going to keep convincing myself this is going to end beautifully.

This piece right here Joonni is one of the many reasons why I LOVE your blog…FANTASTIC WORK you never seize to amaze me.
I am currently watching over the episodes and while watching the earlier one’s I kept asking myself how did ES evolve into this strong admirable woman we now know… and who would have thought that she was capable of loving so deeply that she would rather die than to lose that love. And I kept trying to pin point that exact moment she decided that Young was her life now and that there was no turning back.
It’s kind a funny how all these questions about her kept popping up in my head and I just could not quite figure them out, then I took a break from watching and decided to see what was going on over at Joonni’s and WAH-LA… she had this posted 😀 😀 😀 I felt immense joy reading this. It highligted those things that I never really considered before, and once acknowledge makes Faith that much more enjoyable… ( More heartbreaking too 😦 ).
    Thank you Joonni for this.

lluvlee, ES’s love and sacrifice of Young was gradual. The first point where I realized she was sacrificing herself for Young was that sleeve grab when Young came to ask her about her allegiance to KC or Gongmin and she said she’s okay (to stay with KC), as long as Young is alive. The next pivotal point for ES was when she realized that SHE was the key to keeping Young alive and her interventions would save him, i. e. by agreeing to marry D-bag uncle to stop his ambush on Young. Another pivotal moment was when she decided to return to the palace and save Princess Noguk instead of leaving to the gates to ensure she can return and get an antibiotic. However, her ultimate sacrifice is at this point in the drama, she’s wiling to stay and die in Young’s arms rather than be healthy and alive in the future time. I feel so bad for them. If they don’t get a happy ending, Faith fans will be creating a new ocean with our flood of tears! *sobs-x-a-million*

I forgot another point was when she tried to return to the heaven’s door by herself and Deok-man so Young could stop worrying about her and KC would stop trying to kill everyone to get her. But she turned back around to save Young instead.

Like Young said in Ep 21, everything ES did, smile/cry/runaway/stay, she was ultimately thinking of his well-being.

  4. Joonni, bless your heart for this post. Your analysis is so insightful, eloquent and touching as usual. I shouldn’t be surprised, seeing how all your previous posts have been so brilliantly written. You sure are the master of words and articulate what was on the viewer’s mind while watching Faith like it’s nobody’s business. Love the poem and the symbolism of the Chrysanthemum. Thanks again, Joonni Daejang for the weekend drug:).

So happy you have a post dedicated for our Imja. I love how she loves CY (till death do us part even without the diamond ring.ha!). LOVE HER.

Imja’s love for Daejang dictates what she does in this world (Goryeo). She has lost her contemporary attitude and live life here like she would in her world where everything she does is for monetary gain (playing the game of greed). Like you said, she may have nice things, but she really doesn’t have anything. We no longer see her talking about making cosmetics/soaps for money with her pyramid scheme. That’s probably why we no longer see her carrying her designer handbag around. Her everyday life here now revolves around the man she loves and protects come hell or high water and the world he lives in…a world where his word is his honor…a world she’s never been exposed to (where in her world, even a man’s signature does not count for much, especially if he as a slick attorney). That means she has to stick her nose into everybody’s (the King, Queen and Woodalchis (they are the dwarfs and ES the snowhite..hee)) business as they are all a part of CY’s daily life as a Daejang. Lucky for her they all love her as much as they love their Daejang.

I don’t think there’s a word that can quite describe the depth of her love for CY. If she were to reveal to CY the fact that she’s been floating around the universe just for him will break his heart in pieces. We can see how much it hurts him to see or heard that she cried, so I can only imagine what his heart will go through if he knows about the sole purpose of her endless time traveling.

OH and PAM, we faithfuls are with you…110%!!!

Here’s to wishing an ever-lasting love for our Imja Couple this time around!!!

Joonni, congrats on hitting 1 million counts! And thank you for this lovely analysis of Eun-soo. Regarding the Chrysanthemum, there’s a picture of that flower printed on ES’s diary along with two quotes:

    1) Only learn to love by loving
    2) Age does not protect you from love, but love, to some extent, protects you from age.

I don’t know if those clues will lead to anything. Praying for a happy ending 😀

Wow, Joonni, a million hits on your blog—–Congratulations and hugs all around for all Faithlings.

But then, your wonderful post on Eun Soo just hits the right spots in my heart. At this point in the story, I think ES decision will drive the storyline. This beautiful character has come a long way from the whiny woman of the first episodes to a woman who has discovered true love and in turn is willing to spread that love around in Goryeo. I believe everyone in this blog has pretty much covered how Eun Soo’s character has developed in this story and how it has affected everyone around her.

I just wanted to say that I am so happy to have stumbled into this blog a month ago and shared all my thoughts and my addiction with everyone here. It was nice to know that I was not the only crazy person in the universe who was addicted to this drama called Faith. To think about it, I just stumbled into this drama by chance, not even having read anything about it or even knowing who LMH was. It was my 2nd Kdrama after watching Jumong. I could not believe how I got sucked into this blackhole of a story that I have not yet escaped from its gravitational pull. But I am happy to be spinning in it with everyone here until it releases me.

To all Faithlings, let’s be optimistic about the ending. I have already given up making theories and creating scenarios about how our favorite couple will end up so I will put my Faith in writer Song and the the director to string us along for the ride in the last 2 episodes. They have surprised us so many times so all I can say is: “Bring it on!”

So Joonni and Softy, here’s to both of you (raising my wine glass). Thank you for providing us Faithlings with a place to cry, laugh, swoon and vent. And we ain’t done yet…LOL!

    October 27, 2012
  12. Waaaaaaaaaahh I’m open-mouthed!!! your post is very wonderfull. Incredible it’s very well written… Joony and softy you are the best!! It’s true that we know little on eun soo, But her character is so charming… We want to see her happy, We want to see her with young and to make him happy. Your comment moved me, especially ost. The poem he must be beautiful but my English is a little bit just for understanding. I am going to try to watch at the last 2 episodes at the same time. You think that I shall arrive there? Even I doubt

  13. Joonni and Softy, what a beautiful piece. I loved how you tied in the poem. You 2 are great writers from the heart. I discovered your blog about a month ago and tagged it as a favorite. I am a huge fan of KHS and was waiting for her comeback with Faith and was not disappointed. Now I am a huge fan of LMH and will have to watch his previous Kdramas. Do you know if the OST CD for Faith can be purchased and where? I am in love with the music! Again congrats on the million blog hits!

    October 27, 2012
    • joonni #

Yes, of course you can share the link! I just really wanted to keep the integrity of the post together because I used outside references and Softy didn’t watermark her image as hers. I didn’t want parts of the post just separated and circulated throughout the web without references so that is why I put that footnote.
      Thank you for asking, though.

      October 27, 2012
  15. Hello Joonni, I thought your comment about ES being difficult to understand was interesting. I didn’t find her difficult to understand. I was able to follow her and I understood where what she was doing was coming from.

    October 28, 2012
    • joonni #

To be specific, I wonder why she isn’t telling Young anything about the time-traveling. When and why did she fall in love with Young? Eun-soo doesn’t talk about her thoughts and feelings very much and when she does, I initially have a hard time figuring out why she feels or thinks that way because the writer doesn’t give us a lot of the story from Eun-soo’s perspective.

      October 28, 2012
      • Pam #

I agree…the director was a little too subtle when it comes to depicting why ES loves Young. The back story of how ES falls in love with Young happens in flashback mode: Young risking his life to save her life numerous times. She learns about this self-sacrifice and selflessness from Young, something that was foreign to her before coming to Goryeo. Hence, now she’s trying to repay Young by protecting his life and heart.

        October 28, 2012
        • Matilda2012 #

I also want to add that unlike Young who has always had self-reflection dialogues, we cannot pinpoint really at what episode did ES find out she was starting to fall in love with CY. Yes there were those subtle gestures like sleeve holding and tugging at CY. But then she is a 21st century woman where touching of the opposite sex is quite normal. I have been re-watching some episodes to figure out the exact moment but can’t seem to determine it. With CY, I know it is in episode 9 when he muses out loud to Daeman, “when did this start?” And even before that when Aunt Choi warns him not to fall in love with ES and he says “why not?”.

          October 28, 2012
          • Sussie #

I think CY found out (or better say, accepted) he had fallen in love in ep 8, when he was locked in the cell, looking at the chrysanthemum flower and remembering his moments with ES. Recognizing his feeling, helped him to “defrost” his heart (he dreamed being in the lake, with a beautiful spring scenery).
As regards ES, I believed she found out she was falling in love with CY also in ep 8 when she was looking at those chrysanthemum flowers in the garden.

And, as well for our bromance, I think that GM started to really trusting to CY as a friend like brothers, on that same ep.

For me, ep 8 was very important to the main characters.

          • joonni #

            Hmm, yes.
            @Ivoire
Let me rephrase. Eun-soo is not easy for everyone to know what is going on in her head. Like Matilda said, she didn’t get a lot of self-reflection dialogues and that can leave a lot of casual viewers just hanging.

            October 28, 2012
  16. Margaret #

    Hello Joonni,
I’ve been a silent reader around here since episode 12 and I love your blog so much. There’re just 2 episodes left so I think I should officially say thank to you and Softy for your wonderful posts. They are always so insightful and lovely!
I have some thoughts about Eun Soo’s transformation to share with you. It might be a bit different from your opinion, so if you disagree, please take it with a grain of salt. As English is not my mother language, it’s always difficult for me to express my full thinking. So I’ll try my best to make it clear and hope that you’ll understand.
    1. I personally don’t find Eun Soo difficult to understand. All her actions and decisions are firmly based on her personality. She’s strong and independent so she never lets anyone control her decisions, even if it’s the King, Ki Chul or Choi Young. She seems noisy and has no depth sometimes, but actually she knows and understands everything. She just doesn’t express and always put on brave face because it hurts her pride to cry(as she told Jang Bin in ep.9). It’s also because she doesn’t want to put more weight on Choi Young’s shoulders or bother people around her. No matter what happens, she will think and do herself. That’s why she just shares her thinking with Jang Bin but never asks him what to do. That’s also the reason she hasn’t told Young about the secret of future Eun Soo yet.
    2. I’m not totally convinced about the way Eun Soo found a purpose for her medical knowledge and skill in Goryeo. I see she isn’t very active as a doctor because she has lived carefully not to affect the history. Except 3 big operations (rescued No Gook- because she was forced, Choi Young – because she stabbed him, and Lee Sung Gye), she just treats wounds that have nothing to do with lives and making soaps (as she told Mr. Yuan Envoy in ep.21). About the operation for Lee Sung Gye, it wasn’t because she wanted to be useful around the medical office. It was because she needed a reason to go to Ki Chul’s house. (In episode 10, when she was arguing with Choi Young, she said “… and today, I just did one surgery. It’s not because I’m a doctor with great morality. Just so I can sound out that Ki Chul using the surgery tools as my excuse to go and see him face to face, somehow I did the surgery…”). Even when she started to accept her life in Goryeo in ep.12 and learned how to read pulse from Jang Bin, what she thought about was starting a cosmetic business, not trying to rescue more people. I agree that she finds friends in Goryeo and has volunteered to use her medical skill to take care of them ( treats No Gook and WooDalChis- several times), but back in ep.5, she also tried to treat Ki Chul’s guards. In my opinion, from the beginning, even she’s a material woman, she still has morality of a doctor, and she treats people not just because she cares about them. So, at this point, I don’t think “being in Goryeo changed her” that much. With her characteristic, she just lives with all her might (maybe in different way) wherever she is. That’s why Choi Young loves her. And I think what really changes her until now is her love to Young.
    3. From the confession with Jang Bin, I’m not sure if I’m right or not but I think I know when and why she fell in love with Choi Young: ( I’m using your recap in quote marks)
    – After Choi Young rescued her from Ki Chul’s house and she stopped calling him Psycho in ep.6- she also stopped thinking of him as a cold blooded kidnapper. In ep.7, when they were with the little King she saw the other side of Choi Young and started to understand his reason to kill- she asked him to go to heaven with her. But what made her fall for him was his surrender because of her. At first, I didn’t understand the way they were staring at each other when he was captured. I thought she still misunderstood him about the king’s death. But actually, she knew everything ( you can watch ep.18 again to make sure, she told him that) and since that look, her feeling toward him started.
    – We know she had never opened her heart for anyone before , and in ep.9, after returning from Ki Chul house, she was mad at Choi Young . She had a reason to tell herself “ this person isn’t it”, but Jang Bin, unfortunately, made her understand more about Young and her last defense was broken.
    – Then in ep.10, she “drew a line and said “ don’t come in, don’t come in” by telling him not to care her business and saying good bye.
    – In ep.11, While kept thinking about Hwa Soo In ‘s words “ That person besides you must be the first , right? He always runs to you and finds you, each time, without fail.” She knew Choi Young was “ that person” who was always there whenever she “turned around” ( remember his rescues her frome ep.9), but her heart was “trying to close again and hide”, she ran away from him.
    – In ep.12, 13, 14 they spent much time together, so she “was so used to him” and “missed him so much” that she “ couldn’t stand it and hugged him that night.
    – Esp. in ep.14, It was in that small room, when she “ can’t see him and asked “ Are you there?”, he says “ I am here”.
Yep, that’s what the way I understand it. Sorry if it’s too long!

        October 29, 2012
    • joonni #

Thank you Margaret for sharing with us your thoughts!
      1. Let me rephrase. I do understand why Eun-soo act and reacts in the way she does because of her personality. What I meant specifically was that Eun-soo’s character does not get the same kind of time and space to explain herself and her thoughts to the people around her like Gongmin and Young does.
But about your argument that she is not telling Young about the time traveling because she doesn’t want to put more weight on Young’s shoulders. I don’t see how the time-traveling part would necessarily put more weight on his shoulders. Can you explain more?
      2. I wrote that Eun-soo always had the potential to be a wonderful doctor. By her transformation, I argue this from the perspective of speculating how she will be if she returns to the future. I think she will change her speciality to general surgery again because being in Goryeo and falling in love with Young changed her. Not just simply because she was in Goryeo.
      3. I had a hard time understanding her look at Young after he was captured for “treason.” I think she thought that Young blamed her for Choong-jung’s death and she in return was feeling defensive (as we can see in her talk with Jang Bin later)

      October 28, 2012
      • margaret264 #

Thanks a lot for your reply. Now I think I understand your points more.
It’s a few minutes to ep.23 so I’ll try to explain what I think as simple as possible!
Not just the time travelling mystery, Eun Soo has tried not to share many things with Choi Young. I always feel it’s perfectly in character for her to put on brave face, keep a secret, solve the problem by herself, and for him to find out that secret, get angry, then determine to “ take it” for her. So, if you see Choi Young’s reactions under Eun Soo’s eyes, you’ll see it’s logical not to tell him any more about her trouble, because his reaction will be always the same. We all know Choi Young doesn’t have any interest in the mystery, he even feels it awkward sometimes, but he even risked his life to take the diary back to her. So I consider problems with the time travelling related similar to the poison: she doesn’t want to put more weight on his shoulders. And one more reason I forgot to say, I think Eun Soo doesn’t tell Young about her future-self in partly because she still can’t explain this mystery by herself, while he’s already felt it awkward sometimes, so she might feel complicated to make him believe it.
It’s just my opinion. I think after ep.23 and 24, we’ll have more answers for what we’re waiting for. and maybe my opinion will be changed ^ ^

        • joonni #

While I still can’t say I agree, you make an excellent point so I will go on ponder of this. Yay! Thanks for the brain food.
