Some Youngspirin, Please.

It has been one day since “Faith” ended.

It has only been one day since “Faith” ended.

It has already been one day since “Faith” ended.

How are you doing guys? Me? Good. Except when I listen to the “Faith” OST and my heart starts squeezing inside my chest. I think I need a Youngspirin for this.

Faith (Main Title-Choral.Ver)

I don’t know why it hurts so much when the drama ended happily but it does. When I think about Young and Eun-soo, tears come to my eyes.

I’ve written and pondered so much about “Faith.” Yet, I didn’t know how much I would be affected by it or how deep the drama had seeped into my heart. I think the final episode has a lot to do with this feeling. It wasn’t perfect but in my eyes, it succeeded in really emphasizing how much Young and Eun-soo loved each other, how much every (good) character in the drama loved each other, and exactly how incredible their journey has been from episode one to episode twenty-four. All of this hit me really hard and I’m still reeling from the pain and beauty of it. It’s not easy being loyal and faithful. It’s not easy to grow in character or remain constantly good. And it’s not easy to love that much but Do-chi, the Suribang, the Woodalchi, Lady Choi, Gongmin, Noguk, Young, and Eun-soo did it. They stayed true to each another and themselves. They were faithful in their love and care for each other till the very end and forever.

Many of you had lingering questions about the time-travel concept in the drama and I was hoping to get to them as soon as I had time to work it out myself and put it properly into words. But as I expect to not have enough time in the next few days, I am just going to copy here SH‘s awesome analysis she left in the comments for episode 24 recap. I was amazed at how clearly she organized it. THANK YOU SO MUCH SH. You are an angel and genius.

Time Travel:

Maybe this has been explained elsewhere or in the comments here already. But this is how I understand the concept, granted there are a few things unexplained. In chronological orders:

1) One fine night in 2012, Eun-soo gets kidnapped by Choi Young to Goryeo to heal Queen Noguk. This is where Ep. 1 begins.
2) Ep. 1 to 24 is Eun-soo first time traveling and living in Year 1350 Goryeo.
3) Toward the end of Ep. 24, Eun-soo goes back to Seoul to gather medical supplies to heal a frozen Choi Young.
4) After a quick gathering of medical supplies, she goes through the portal.
5) But the portal takes her 100 years back to Year 1250.
6) Immediately after she realizes she’s gone to the wrong time, so she goes back to the portal to try another time-travel. But the portal is already closed.
7) She stays in 1250. She presumably heals a lot of sick people of that era while waiting for another chance to go through the portal.
8) While in 1250, she also leaves clues so that the Eun-soo of 1350 will remember what to do. The writing in her diaries and leaving a message in the film canister.
9) She also has time to figure out time travel dates (maybe not exact times) but at least she knows, from her previous time travel calculations in 1350, what formula and calendar to use.
10) Once she is positive about a date, she prepares herself for another travel through the portal.
11) When she gets to the portal, it is not immediately opened. It takes an unwavering Faith that this time the portal will take her to the right place, only then the portal opens.
12) She goes through it. It brings her back to Seoul. In her voiceover, we hear about this memory, longing and connection that would make her meet him again. Unlike her first time-travel in Ep. 24, this time she doesn’t even glance over modern Seoul because nothing in her heart belongs to 2012.
13) After a mere second in Seoul, she goes back through the portal.
14) This time it takes her to 1355 and there she finds Choi Young.

It’s that simple. Time is linear (but circular). She didn’t have any memory of her time travel experience in Ep. 1 because she hadn’t gone anywhere yet. Those clues were left there because her future self in Ep. 24, who had experienced everything from Ep. 1-24, knew the dangers in 1350.

The items:

Surgical tools, diary and mini projector have some significance.

-Surgical tools are to reaffirm the legend of Hwata – an emphasis on Hwata being a myth, a story is told and exaggerated from generation to generation. The 1250 Eun-soo with her advanced medical skills obviously would make people notice and connect her to the legend of Hwata. The myth lives on and on, so that people like Jo Il-shin knows. JIS knows about Hwata’s myth in Ep. 1 and convinces the GM to ask Choi Young to go kidnap Eun-soo in 2012. The story comes full circle. I don’t think Eun-soo intentionally wants to perpetuate the myth of Hwata. It’s more like she’s a doctor and her duty is to save lives, which is very consistent with her character. So while waiting for the gate to open in 1250, she puts her skills to use. This is also where Son Yoo’s grandfather’s story comes in; she saves people who would have died without her 21st century medical skills. In essence, her one year’s stay in 1250 shapes history, like a butterfly effect.

-The diary. She knows from her 1350 self that this diary will play a significant role, so whatever she does with this diary in 1250, Ki Chul will have possession of it in 1350. From the content of the diary, we see some solar flare calculations, which is helpful for her to figure the date to retry time travel. Some notes about what will happen in 1350 based on her personal experiences – Choi Young using his frontal attack and Choi Young is trapped while rescuing the scholars. Eun-soo already has those memories, so she makes notes to herself knowing this diary will find her in 1350 eventually. Everything is circular in away.

-A message in film canister. Again from her 1350 memory, she knows that day Choi Young and her travel to the portal. Without that message, they would have gone to the border and waited there, and effectively everything after Ep. 19 would not happen. Noguk would be killed; the history of Korea would be changed and Choi Young would be left devastated like what is written in that message. So she writes that message in 1250, leaves it under a rock (remember her looking at a direction of where 1350, Eun-soo and Choi Young embrace). Things become circular where there is no beginning or end.

-The mini projector. This one is not directly related to saving Choi Young. It is symbolic to show that there are people waiting for her in 2012 – her mom and dad. When Choi Young asks her to stay, he mentions there are people at the other side waiting for her too, and their journey to the portal reiterates that point. She needs to say goodbye to her parents, to people who love her in 2012. A mini projector of her parents is a way of remembrance, of her saying “goodbye” figuratively. It also solidifies her faith in finding Choi Young. I suspect the reason she can’t get back to the right time initially is because she wavers a little bit. That voiceover about her lacking faith “that day” and her looking over modern Seoul show us that wavering commitment. Thus the portal takes her to the wrong time, to Year 1250. Once she says her “goodbye” to her parents, and putting full faith in finding Choi Young, the portal takes her the right time, to Year 1355.

The question of time and duration:

First time she gets back to Seoul, it seems she has been missing only for a few hours in “modern” time. I suspect when the fortune-teller tells her in Ep. 1, that she’ll be gone for a year, he is referring to her time in “Goryeo”.

But in Ep. 1, we see that Goryeo time seems shorter than modern time. My justification for that is that the portal is unpredictable; it is predicated on Faith and Destiny. Choi Young is destined to meet Eun-soo and take her back to Goryeo in time to save Noguk in Ep. 1.

In essence, the concept of time is intangible; it is dependent upon a person’s faith. It takes Eun-soo a year of traveling to find Choi Young, while daejang waits for her four years from 1350 Goryeo onward.

Eun-soo’s presence in the past is destined to shape the history of Korea that she and viewers know. She believes that Choi Young is alive because her traveling to modernity shows that modern Seoul is still the same, nothing is changed. If Choi Young dies that day, then it would have created a butterfly effect that would alter history.

Like SH wrote, there are still a few things left unexplained. And what makes it harder for us viewers to figure it out is the fact that some scenes originally in the script were cut out. I also doubt Writer Song has it all completely worked out herself. I am a huge fan of time-travel stories and nobody ever gets it all right because we just can’t comprehend as human beings what time-travel is and how it works because of our limited scientific paradigms and vocabulary to express such a complicated process. So undoubtedly, there will always be something left unexplained or some gap in the logic.

So after reading what SH wrote and nodding along to everything, I still have one question that I hope you guys can answer. What about that vision/dream Eun-soo had of Young dying? Was it just a projection of some inner fear that she had of him dying?

I read everyone’s comments to the final recap and because I can’t reply to every single one, I want to express here my gratitude for your thanks and sharing your ideas, opinions, interpretations, scenarios, and analyses. Many made me teary again because you guys showed so much love for the drama, many made me want to hunt you down personally and give a big bear hug for the general awesomeness, and many made my brain tingle. Now I have some new ideas for new posts. I can’t believe there is still so much to say about this drama. Gosh, you guys are so awesome. Everyone should start a blog! Seriously, if you haven’t done it already, you guys should go back and read the comments to the final recap. Lots of things to think about there and lots of things to make you appreciate this drama more. Young orders you to!

Joonni and all lovely sister, i’ve seen some BTS’s picts of Faith. The blog in Indonesian language, but you still able to have fun just see all those picts, here is the link http://kadorama-recaps.blogspot.com/2012/11/faith-behind-scenes-ep-23-24.html (@ann : do you saw this pictures already ? )

At that blog, i also got some info, that KHS is a friendly person. She can get along very well in the short time. She was even brought some drinks for all the crew while still wear those bloody cloth after she’s done her screen. The shop’s owner get shock saw her in bloody cloth. LOL. KHS forgot to change her cloth.

Writer Song also admit that our daejang’s act improve so well. She said that, In Ep 22, when LMH fight all alone, he already transform into Choi Young, there is no LMH left.

Does anyone have the antidote for this poison ? Anyone ? Getting torture each day. So…sob

    November 4, 2012
    • hey chikoku.

antidote? sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but unless we see Daejang on screen again in a new drama STAT there is none. there are only bandages and have FAITH that we get through it. this is just my 2 cents and i’m dying for someone to prove me wrong here.

I tried watch many new k-drama to watch the emptiness, but there is no other drama able to capture my heart. So just re-watch my old kdramas, which i love much, like Jang Geum, coffee house, QIHM, etc..

Faith really set a high bar for kdrama. and it make me a picky person, not like as usual. Now, I cant watch just common kdrama anymore. It has to be as powerful as Faith. Anyone can give a suggestion for the next drama ?

I feel like I need a video club for this k-drama. Kind of like a book club that we watch each episode and just dissect it until we can’t any more. Honestly it would just be an excuse to watch it again. Now that it’s over, I’m trying to find another drama to watch…so many choices.

Joonni, again thank you for all your awesome work. I think your writing is beautfiul, insightful, and just plain amazing!!! You have an amazing talent. SH, thank you for the explanation on the time-traveling, it really helped me to make sense of it all. I must admit that after watching the ep 24 I was still confused. Like all of you I don’t know what to do with myself. My Mon’s and Tue’s will not be the same (I fear them). And honestly none of the upcoming or dramas that have recently started catch my eye. What to do?
I hope that the news is correct and that LMH will have a project coming up soon. I love him (I know, get in line..right). He did such an awesome job with CY.

  5. Hate to admit it, but Monday sucks once again. I can already feel the emptiness inside. Perhaps just watching an episode during that time will help somewhat. ***sobs sobs***

Sadly, I’m still searching for fanmade videos even though it just fuels my Faith Fever ***sigh and off to down more youngspirin***

This MV is beautiful!! I love each scene chosen… But, watching it, was like rubbing salt on my wound. T_T I’m so sad that there is no more Faith tomorrow… I don’t like Mondays again… T_T
Like you, I have been searching for MVs or interviews, I’m just “pouring water on a drowning man” (or best saying a drowning woman… since it’s ME! T_T) I miss so much Imja couple, king/queen, woo dal chi puppies and aunt Choi… *sobs*

I have decided that tonight I will begin watching QIHM as a start for my rehab session! 🙂

        • No worries and apologies necessary, Sussie. Carelessly, I do that all the times myself lately:).

I can’t seem to find any LMH interviews at all. I was hoping he would do some post Faith, so that I can still see his sexiness on screen and hear his seductive voice, but no luck ***wah wah wah***

Hope watching QIHM will do it for you. I can’t seem to get myself to watch anything right now unless Daejang is in it. I’m hopeless I know….God help me…

By the way,… I feel as if the world is putting me before a big test!!!
A very unbelievable thing occurred this day… In my country’s national newspaper K-pop or K- dramas are never mentioned (only about 3 times in a 5 years period, I had read something regarding this topics)… what did I read? well… I just read an article (2 pages article!) about Hyun Bin and Lee Min Ho!… I almost fell from my chair! I was like… Oh My! Can’t believe it! This article was praising both actors (two of my 3 favorites korean actors by the way). After I finished reading it, all my Faith/ LMH/daejang CY’s addiction went way off the charts again! LOL
Ottoke?? I was trying to be back to my “normal” behavior but now,… I think I failed this test… All I can think now is about Faith and Hyun Bin soon to be discharged from his military service. So… now I am much worse than before since I just added one more thought regarding k-dramas (HB return)!
Hahaha my hubby was pretty surprised too since there was an article on our local newspaper about the guy I have been talking so much these past 3 months. He said to me,… “well now I know for sure that you are not the only girl crazy about him” (since the article’s writer is a woman, who in turn interviewed other women about their thoughts regarding LMH and HB) LOL

            November 4, 2012
            • **Helping you up from the floor*** ha.

Woah, .get out of town..you’re kidding? You get this article the very day you decided to start rehab…ahaha… You failed the test???? Okay, that was rhetorical, so answer needed…LOL.

Seriousness aside, I know it doesn’t help you with your rehabilitation process, but how awesome and kool is that to see LMH’s face plaster on a national newspaper! LMH”s fame has gone far and wide. So, is your hubby going to let you frame this newspaper up now? heehee.

              thanks for sharing, gutterbud!

hahaha I didn’t ask for his permission (sorry hubby… hahaha)… at this moment this article has already been cut and stored in my box of memories where btw, I also keep his cards and his poems written by him to me. He only laughed to me… and said… ” ok, so don’t get mad to me if you see me having a photo of Jessica Alba o Jessica Biel on my computer” LOL

Gukja, why’d you have to go and make me cry? I still can’t get over our daejang…and the hot chemistry between CY and ES. I’m watching CH and I am like, when are Yoon Sung and Nana going to have hot chemistry? I’m on ep 10 and I am not impressed at all. So lukewarm…ugh. Faith, you’ve spoiled every kdrama for me now. BTW, the sexy prowl by Yoon Sung in ep 6 was nothing compared to Young’s hot predatory I’m-going-to-devour you prowl when he asked ES to repeat daejang over and over again! Gah! Huhuhuh…missing my fave OTP…thanks for the vid.

      November 4, 2012
  6. Faith has affected me in every way. Even though it has ended, I am still logging on to Joonni’s to check for recent comments and news. Stalking LMH and KHS is my priority when I surf the net. It’s OST is still playing in my head. The last scene is still fresh…. heck, the whole series is. How am I able to shake this off, I wonder? Even a whole bottle or truckload of Youngspirin is not going to help. It may take a couple months or probably a year to get over it. There is no doubt this drama has set new standards and benchmarks for future dramas. I will constantly compare it to others unintentionally. I shall try not to but I may not be able to help it.

It brings me to tears whenever I think of those scenes that affected me so much. Especially scenes when N and GM lost their child, when CY held ES’s hand to comfort her. The tenderness and love shown by these characters makes me look at my world in a different light. Despite all heartache and pain they are still able to hold on to one thing, love. Truly it transcends. The sheer respect and love they have for each other even between CY and GM is played beautifully. Ask me if I learned anything, it will be perseverance, integrity, love, patience and most of all faith. In our daily lives, we have often forgotten what it truly means to live, to believe and to have hope. Perhaps there is more that others; together with me on this same journey has learnt. Please do share.

Once my brother asked me, what is it that makes K-dramas so special? I said it is not the 100% they give but more so of the 200% they give in a role given to them. The hard work they have put into conveying a message not only by speech but also through every part of their being. Faith and its actors have shown me just that. I asked my hubs if he believed that too and he does. I am glad he doesn’t think I am a nutter anymore.

Clearly some of us are suffering badly from Faith withdrawal. My phone has been buzzing almost continuously for the past 2 hours from email notifications. Most of which are from you girls’s comments here. Seriously. And I thought I had it bad. Can I make a suggestion? Do what I do. Get an awesome pic of daejang and/or eunsoo and make it the screensaver of your phone or pc, whichever you use most. It keeps the withdrawal insanity at bay for me. Well that and the fact that the LMH fan meet is in less than 2 weeks. 🙂

  12. Hey everybody! It is wonderful that Joonni created a place for us all to get a dose of Faith, after the show is finished. There are so many fans and a lot of people still have Faith addiction so hard (like me) that they are not ready to let go. We have created a community on the lifejournal site for such an occasion. Faith related posts and fanfics can be found there. So if you are in need of extras, please come by and check it out.

It’s not that they didn’t recognize her; they didn’t see her. The only Woodalchi that saw her directly was a new recruit- the guy who talked to her.
