Down the Rabbit Hole: Cheongdamdong Alice Episode 3 and 4
What a wonderful adventure! I haven’t laughed this much or had so much fun watching a drama in a long time. There’s plenty of food-for-thought, friendship, family, tears, and romance in Cheongdamdong Alice, making this drama an all-around K-drama fantasy. I’ve followed that white rabbit down the hole and I’m up for anything that comes my way!
In my first impression post about Alice, I commented on the quasi-critique the drama had on South Korean economic materialism and stated my dubiousness about how far this drama will take that. I predicted not very far and I was right. But this is not a bad thing, I have realized. This drama was never meant to be taken as serious social critique and while in the first two episodes, it pointed fingers at the rampant consumerism that has taken over Korean society, this was merely to establish the world inhabited by the characters; in other words, to give structure to the social world that Se-kyung, Yoon-joo, and Sshhaa~ live in so we can understand why they made the choices they did. Alice is a romance drama first and foremost. Which means all the world’s wrongs must be made personal; actual social critique is subsumed by the ever faithful narrative of Cinderella and her Prince. So by episode 3 and 4, we root for Se-kyung to triumph in the already existent social structure that will continue to churn out one materialistic girl after another, not for her to overturn it. At the end, Se-kyung will marry her Prince Charming and live in a beautiful and spacious Cheongdamdong palace.
Yes, it’s a predictable ending but it’s going to be so much fun getting there, especially with the off-kilter Jean Thierry Sshhaa~ at the helm. He is perfectly loony but so earnest in everything; it’s quite endearing. Heck, I’ll say he has charmed my pants off. Park Shi-hoo is putting his all into this character and he has reaped his reward- I am becoming a fan. He looks like he is having so much fun and I am having fun along with him. From his high-pitched saturi to his deep-throated CEO tone, from his obsessive texting to his poised “reflections,” from his joker smiles to his fierce charisma, and from Cha Seung-jo to Jean Thierry Sshhaa~, I am enjoying every minute of Park Shi-hoo’s performance. Bravo!
Other than a hero who is closer to being Prince Alarming than Prince Charming, there is another unexpected element in this Cinderella story- the heroine forges a friendship with the evil witch. (Yes, I know I’m getting my fairytales mixed up but you get the gist.) By episode 4, Se-kyung and Yoon-joo have entered into an interesting mentorship, founded by a threat but leading to mutual understanding and respect. Yoon-joo is turning out to be more than just a two-dimensional “evil” secondary lead so I’m curious what her reaction will be when she finds out her old “husband” is really in love with Se-kyung. I don’t think that Yoon-joo has any feelings left for Seung-jo but the case with villainous characters is that they feel possessive and righteous not matter what. I wonder if Yoon-joo will lay a claim on Seung-jo in any way against Se-kyung. I hope Alice will continue to be as unexpected as it has till now.
What also prevents Alice from being a typical Cinderella story is how Cinderella is trying on the glass slipper that doesn’t fit. Se-kyung wants to become the princess in the palace and is consciously doing all she can to become one. She seeks guidance from Yoon-joo and when Yoon-joo gives her a test to dress up as a Cheongdamdong lady, Se-kyung fails. Yoon-joo points out that it’s because Se-kyung dressed herself up as poor woman trying to look rich, instead of a rich woman just dressing up everyday. It’s interesting- Cinderella was originally a gentleman’s daughter who ended up poor because of her father’s death and her stepmother. Se-kyung, on the other hand, was always in that working class and never had the opportunity to cultivate a “genteel” mind. Cinderella’s delicate feet fit into those elegant glass slippers perfectly without any effort but to Se-kyung, who has always seen clothes through frugal eyes, Cheongdamdong consumerism is something she has to mold herself into.
On the completely shallow side, I love romance stories when the hero falls in love with the heroine first and chases after the girl. Love, love, love. This means lots of longing looks, wagging tails, and unnamed good deeds. Jean Thierry Sshhaa~ totally becomes just plain ol’ Cha Seung-jo in front of Se-kyung and it’s both hilarious and delightful to watch. Ah, the pining heart of love! Give me moar!
Yup, Joonni is a very happy girl. With Cheongdamdong Alice, School 2013, Missing You, King of Dramas, My Daughter Seoyoung, and Homeland, my drama plate is full to the brim with a diverse offering of genres. Yay! *giddy dance*

hahaha! yes, they getting into the right track..I just feel sorry for HSK, no matter how hard she tries to go on clean but circumstances doesn’t permit her to..I’d feel really really sad by the time that CSJ will find out the truth about her and his reactions. But anyway, the last scene was daebak, when CSJ introduced HSK as his girlfriend and his plan of marrying her, his father, TH and GN Fashion family were all shocked, haha! All their plans have been shattered with CSJ’s announcement..I’m so excited for the next episodes!
Jhen, I love how innocent their love is, I think of all the Kdramas here, it feels so innocent, it is amazing to just see these two people being together, I love their dialogue, it is very pure, honest (how so strange, amongst so much misunderstanding to me this feels yet so honest). I think they should definitely be happy together. Of all the coupling (Faith excluding of course) I think they are so well matched, their faces are so cute together. OMG, I am going nuts here for the two of them. How about that crazy’s guy face when she told him to back off? Did you like that?
are you referring to TH? on the opening scene? If that is so, I was like saying yes! HSK! fighting! TH’s face turned pale and shocked with HSK putting him on the hook, she was just too smart when she said to him that he can’t either reveal the truth to CSJ since it’ll also be the cause for his career’s downfall. I love her fighting spirit on that part.
Yes, exactly the ass of TH… Fighting, fighting…I was so happy, her speech was fantastic! And she delivered it so well too. Oh I think they are both such great actors. I really like her. Jhen how did you start watching Kdramas?
It started when full house was aired here in PH..I so love the team up between rain and song hye kyo, that it relieves the stress on me seeing the comedic parts of the drama along with the cute romantic scenes..then BOF comes next, at first I just ignored it because I didn’t like LMH’s curly hair..hehehe! until I get used with his hair that I’ve started to like him, and then goes the part where he straightens his hair and his handsomeness flaunts with his hair style and so the story goes with my LMH obsession after that haha!
But generally, what I love about kdramas is the way they incorporate comedy in every drama genre. And I preferably love watching romantic comedies and there are a lot of that kind in kdramas, and that’s what draws me into getting hooked with watching kdramas. If you’ll look into my lists of watched dramas in mydramalist account, almost all are rom com..hehehe!
Jhen this is so funny, I think we have very similar taste, 3 out of 5 dramas and 3 out of 5 best actors are exactly the same for us on our mydramalist site, so cool. I also love those kind of shows. I just finished watching “gentleman’s dignity” and Shut up flower boy band, both I loved. I am watching King2Hearts at the moment.
I love that there is comedy in all of kdramas, I love love stories with happy endings, I exclusively watch those kind at the moment, since Faith nearly killed me with all the suspense 🙂

Oh, that was EPIC, really who is the writer for this show? I like her so much, she has a good, good sense for comedy, drama, everything jells in this show. Oh, their faces were priceless when he said they will get married, including our darling heroin… Oh, I am so incredibly happy, the best episode ever…

Wow! The two week hiatus was definitely worth the wait!
I don’t know what it is, but CDDA has a surreal dreamlike quality, like Alice in Wonderland, and I think it’s all PSH and his cutesy acting!
I didn’t think episode 10 could come up with a better cliff hanger! CDDA never disappoints so I should have more faith in the writers!
Loving this show to bits, even though the plot thickens further and it’s getting more complicated.

I too LOVE this show. It is now a definitive 2nd place sharing with SeGa in my list of Kdramas. I think it is the best laugh ever in Kdrama world. Maybe they strike a cord with me and that is all, but I think that writing and acting is spectacular. I also love that there is not too much other stuff going on so we get a LOT of PSH and her time. Love that!
Episode 10 (I’ve only watched it raw and need to see if fully subbed)—finally! The plot moves along at last! YJ discovers SK is seeing her EX! I was wondering when YJ would find out and the sh*t would hit the fan! I understand why SK is heeding YJ’s advice but at the same time SK needs to give SJ the benefit of the doubt and just tell him the truth and if he hates her and dumps her-so be it. But then again, this OTP is so cute and now they are official, I want them to be happy! These two give me butterflies in my tummy. Reminds me of what new love in a relationship was like (even though CDDA has dark undercurrents because SK is keeping the truth from SJ), since I’ve been married for a few years..LOL! PSH’s so ardent, crazy and passionately in love it’s a stark contrast to SK struggle with the truth. I still like her because she is candy, if she wasn’t she would’ve taken TH’s offer. Poor SK and YJ, it’s shocking to hear YJ call them friends. I guess it happened along the way. I really hope SJ doesn’t have a mental break down again when he learns the truth because SK really does love him..it just got twisted for a moment there…hehe.
Pam you are so COOL for watching it raw, OMG, I also so love PSH, how amazing he is and I love her too. I must say that at least for me I am finding fewer female actresses whose acting I adore (of course I think liking guys physique adds few points to my liking, to be honest) but I think sometimes ladies overact for my taste. I know that such is appealing to Korean guys so more power to their craft, but what I so like about our alice is that she really is not overacting at all, I love her eyes express so much more than squealing around … I so love that about our imja and her too and Ha Ji Won was like that as well. Yes, they two do give me butterflies as well. I am hopelessly in love with them.
I agree, dear! We have to give our ladies some love! They are phenomenal, MGY, KHS and HJW are so good at their craft! Both PSH and MGY are hitting it out of the park as far as acting is concerned. Wow! No gripes here and their chemistry is amazing! Physically they match each other too, not traditionally beautiful but attractive in their own way. Where is CDDA going? Love how the writers are keeping us in suspense and I will continue to have faith in them 🙂
Yes, I love how you said it Pam, they are not traditionally beautiful, that is so true. I thought that exact thing when I was watching them taking the picture in the booth, remember that cool moment? I so love how they look, they actually look so peerrrrfect together. I sometimes feel like they could monkey around like that forever and be happy.
Another thing that I love about this show is that we see a lot of two of them and less of other characters. I love that about this drama, as I love watching the two of them.

It seems that ladies just park themselves on guys back and get shlepped around, I love the idea very very much, I wonder how did that start? Does that happen in real life in Korea? In my opinion, it’s something inherently Asian. When I was young, I used to piggyback my close friends and relative all the time. It’s a gesture of closeness, comfort and familiarity.
I’m guessing it probably happens a lot in Korea, since art tends to imitate life, but piggyback is not restricted to Korean culture tbh.

Hi ladies. Sorry I’ve been busy with job interviews and preparations for it. Can’t quite watch CDDA as quickly as I want to/used to.
I like the direction that this drama is heading towards. Not the angsty two women fighting for a guy but Yoon Joo decides to cheer SK on. CSJ’s video confession makes it so much more painful for me to bear if he finds out what SK’s original motive was. But in her defence, she fell for him before she started her games and she didn’t even know who he really is. maybe YJ can help her with the explanation.
I love Tommy Hong’s expression at CSJ’s announcement that he will be marrying SK. It was priceless. Lol. But the excitement of this drama seems to be dying a lil for me. It’s probably the stress from all the interviews and preparations. Help me out ladies! Psyche me up again cos I still love CDDA.

Thank you minozlove. How lovely of you to wish me luck. I have watched Episodes 9 & 10 but for some reasons I just have a muted sense of emotions. I love CSJ’s crazy dance when SK accidently brushed his lips with hers. But the rest, it was a bit hazy. Must be the stress I suppose. I only have one job, lol, so it’s just a matter of which firm I get. Growing up certainly isn’t fun. Keep up with the postings, maybe I may just get my freak on for CDDA again!

Thanks Pam 🙂 Aye I have a PSH fever for a while too and I started Prosecutor Princess. It’s a stark difference in his performance for PP compared to CDDA. His acting was a little mellow in PP but nonetheless convincing. But I really can’t stand the female lead in PP cos I’m in the legal sphere too and her attitude makes me wanna reach into the drama and give her a hard slap.
All that aside, I wish I can protect that childlike love and immature side of CSJ. I can’t believe he actually wrote scripts, filmed and directed his own revenge episode against his dad. Lol! If SK does anything unforgivable to him or anything annoying like KimSoYeon in PP I don’t know what I’d do to her. Make her drink benzene like how CSJ accidentally drank it (and ended up in the hospital)? But for SK, I won’t be rushing her to the hospital. 😛
LOL, ha ha ha that is so funny, I somehow get such a good vibe from this drama that I hope that such won’t happen, but I am shed so many tears since I started watching K dramas that I am convinced that such WILL occur, aigooo, aigooo, aigooo

My job is completely solitary, so I can keep my computer open here, and sort of jump on and read when I get bored with my work, I write a lot as a job, and research, and while I love my subject, I get so bored at times, since it is terribly lonely at times. I do get plenty of interaction with people in my part time job, but here, all day in my office, I think Kdramas keep me sane. Oh, and I loose a lot of sleep lately, which is not good for my face as I am realizing :).
I don’t think I will be watching CDDA either this weekend since I am visiting family and at work conference, aigooo, I will be relaying on koala to recap for me and this forum to keep me going. Also, I don’t like it that it is only 16 episodes, I am missing them already 🙂

Oh my! I just watched last 2 episodes. PSH is amazing… I love his deep voice and his childish gaze. His smile is so appealing… OMO! he is just so dreamy!
btw, I just finished watching The Princess Man … He is definitely a great actor who can perform all kind of roles… from a serious, wounded and tough warrior, to the priceless “Mad Hatter” ever!!

Ladies did you watch episode 11 already? OMO! I’m so happy and teary eyed with CSJ’s marriage proposal to HSK, this man is so selfless when it comes to love, no wonder he is easily shattered most of the times. I feel pity for HSK, she’s like in a deep hole, scorching, trying to surge away from those intentional lies that she has been trying to keep from CSJ just to protect him from hurting.
How can the love between them be so complicated? The pain caused by the people that surrounded him and the harshness of society where everything revolves around money that HSK had to go through. These two situations keeps haunting these two people who are deeply in love with each other.
Though my heart felt like in heaven with the marriage proposal and with HSK’s acceptance of it, I’m afraid of the path their whirlwind romance is leading to. The sudden happiness between this new couple can be clouded with the greed and selfish intentions of the people around them.
Huh! I’m feeling anxious already, I don’t want either of the two to get hurt.
@Sussie by the way, with the news of extension drama, if it will be true, I’ll be so happy. I can’t get enough of PSH already. Watching his Queen of Reversals made me like him more. OMO!

Sussie did you watch episode 12? OMO! I think I’m going to pass out with that ending. Grrrr! In Hwa had already started her evil plans. I’m just so glad TH and YJ are on HSK’s side already and were doing everything to block CSJ from viewing the video. Ottoeke! How will they able to delete the video in his phone? Geezzz! I’m feeling anxious and restless already. Saturday is such a long wait. What is this? It was during Faith that I have felt the same excitement and nervousness. I can’t contain myself already. Watching live airing kdramas is so nerve rocking. LMAO!
Loving how CDDA is taking a dark turn. I do like SK’s dark side much more candy girl persona. I love how the good guys aren’t always “good”. One dimensional characters are unrealistic and boring. I am biting my nails waiting to see is SJ will see that incriminating video because sh*t is going to hit the fan and it will have to eventually. I am not sure if an extension will be needed, since the drama is going at such a fast pace. But I won’t be complaining if I get any more PSH. *Dreamy sigh*
BTW, a lot of people are getting bored and complaining about the show but I have no complaints. I am interested in seeing how SK is going to get out of this one; she promised she will never leave SJ’s side, so let’s see how determined she can be in convincing SJ she loves him unconditionally. I am interested to see SJ grow too, because he needs better coping skills.

The video was still playing. Gezz! i so hate In Hwa, I never expected her to be the main adversary of the relationship between the HSK and CSJ. I just love the shift of characters between TH & YJ, both turning into the same side with HSK. This weekend will be full of chaos if CSJ will be able to see that video.
I wonder how other viewers will get bored on the last 2 episode, when I got the exact opposite reaction. I am full of excitement on the development of their relationship at the same time afraid of what’s gonna happen if CSJ will find out the lies that HSK had plotted before.

Oh my God Pam, how could anyone not adore this drama? Just finished the episode 11, slowly catching up here with everything that has piled up in last month for me to do, but how he said that he will die if she leaves, ohhhhhhhh, my heart exploded right there. I am so in love with this man 🙂

Pam, I was away just for 10 days so I watched 10 – 14 in one sitting. I must say I still adore the show, it has gotten a bit darker in the last few episodes but also more intense and in its own way still very interesting. I would say that I enjoy reading dramabeans recaps of this show much better as they are not as harsh there and they provide a very interesting analysis of characters at the end. I like their recap for this show much better only because I love the show so much and reading such harsh comments, I definitely respect that we all have our own interpretation, so I of course do not criticize it, but as a fan of the show it is much more enjoyable for me to read recap which also praises the show, it is simply less heartbreaking :). I am not sure if you will have the time to read it, but just in case. Have safe travels see you soon
I’d rather read the crooked recaps at vingle than on koala’s. I once tried to read their recap on ep 11 and obviously, there were harsh reviews and comments that I didn’t like reading.
Yes, I so agree Jhen, I almost felt pain when I was reading koala recaps. I so like this show, I couldn’t even finish reading episode 11 recap until the end so I left it. When person does not enjoy the show, it must be torture to recap. I don’t know, I really love the show and everything I feel as I watch it 🙂
Minozlove! Guess where I’ve been since last night? Haha! I was camping there at CADENCE, Softy’s blogsite. She is doing live recaps for CDDA, FBND and the recent one Level 7 Civil Servant. I was searching last night for live recaps of Level7CS and one blogsite had a recap on the 2nd episode, and when I opened it voila! I saw some comments addressing Softy. I was just so happy when I found it was her’s, the same Softy that’s working here with Joonni on recaps. And later on, I realized her blogsite link is also posted here at joonni’s. LOLZ! Had I realized it earlier, I wouldn’t have waited for subbed episodes of those 3 dramas before I came to understand the story in each aired episode. Joonni is also doing some help on her their recently, she translated a preview for episode 6 of FBND. Saw her post there. Gezz! I wish Joonni will have her new posts here soon.

Oh yes, dear me, I am watching Full house, and I am really liking it, but I will go off and check Level 7 civil servant, how many episodes are out? And… handing in my resignation at work tomorrow…ha ha ha…just wishful thinking ha ha ha
there are only 2 episodes out for Level 7..it just started on the 23rd.. hehe

The very first thing that draws me into a drama is its genre, if its a rom com I would definitely watch it and there is a plus for this drama because its an action rom com. Also, the drama is a remake of the action rom com movie “My girlfriend is an Agent”, and I love the movie. Its about two secret agents who were once a couple and they broke up because of the lies that the girl were making up to protect her true identity. Then after several years they met again, where both were already secret agents, and they didn’t know that they were working on the same case. Its a total chaos when they met again because of the hate that they felt for breaking up, until they were able to patch-up their conflict in the end. Its like the Mr. & Mrs Smith type of story.

However, the plot of the story in Level 7 Civil Servant, isn’t all the same. Both are secret agents but the conflict between them already started before they became secret agents through a blind date. 🙂 And so the story goes..no more spoilers hehehe! [/SPOILER]
Having said that, I still like going to koala site because they have so many interesting stories about what is happening in the industry, so I am still grateful to you for the link, it is just the recaps of CDDA that have gotten dark there 🙂
