Faith Q&A Part 5

Faith Fanart 41

First, a petition for an English version of the Faith novel.

Faith novel vol 1 cover

FilChiNY@viki has informed me that the viki Faith community has started a petition for an English version of the “Faith” novel. Another member in the viki community was in direct contact with Writer Song and her publisher and was able to relay to publisher the international fans appeal for an English version. Apparently the publisher said he/she would consider it so the petition has been started to demonstrate the fans’ seriousness.

Here is the link to the petition.
http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/english-version-of-faith/

FilChiNY’s directions for filling out the petition:
Name
Email
(under the comment box)
Location: New York, USA (wherever you are from)
Preference: EBook (or book if that’s your preference)
Member: (viki.com, soompi.com, joonni.com etc.)

gukja also brought to my attention some excerpts from volume one of the “Faith” novel, posted by sia3 at Soompi and translated by icesiren. The novel version sounds amazing and an English version would be wonderful.

“Here’s an excerpt on GMarket for the Faith Novel. Volume 1 covers episodes 1-3.

(/ p.112)

When (he) passed through heaven’s gate, it was the same. Contrary to his worries that CY would lose the woman because of her struggling, in fact she burrowed into his chest. His left arm remembers that feeling. Upon tipping (his) head down, the woman’s soft hair brushed (his) lips, and her scent surrounded them more strongly. The return through heaven’s gate was filled solely with memories of her.

(/ p.150)

After the dagger works at her waist, it releases the gag that was tied behind ES’s head. It must’ve been tightly bound because it takes some time. ES takes a breath and feels his breathing beside her face. Somehow, she narrowly manages to swallow down her tears.

(/ p.162)

The heart that had smashed to pieces upon hearing the royal decree, grabbed hold of the woman. As if grabbing hold of a lifeline. I’ve done wrong. I’ve done something very wrong. I upheld the royal decree but did not keep my promise with heaven’s woman. To be honest, it wasn’t to uphold the royal decree. When my heart began to falter and slip, without my knowledge, it grabbed hold of the woman next to me. So that my heart would not fall, without my knowledge, it did that, reflexively. In that moment, heaven’s lady was left on this earth because of my blind actions.

(/ p.284)

The woman stares at CY as if stunned, her mouth wide open. When he saw her open mouth, CY gave up. I can’t do anymore. This closely, within range of the woman’s scent, I can’t continue to show my anger. CY stands up and turns away. He walks a few steps to create a distance in which he can breathe.”

Song Ji-na’s “Faith” Q&A Part 5

Part 1 here.

Part 2 here.

Part 3 here.

Part 4 here.

71. This question was about how Writer Song felt about the low ratings and wondered if the story changed from what she planned in the beginning. She also asked how Writer Song felt after she watched the show.

Writer Song replied, “Hmm…I am first sorry to the actors when the ratings are bad. I also worry that the staff will lose their morale. You’re right; it is “menboong” (a Korean neologism for “mental breakdown,” depicting a state of mind in which one feels overwhelmed, shocked, and/or panicked to be point of being unable to speak or act in response). Rather than saying that I changed the story because of the ratings, I had to change a lot of things because I found out about the different production situation after the show started airing. My mindset was at that point, “The show at least needs to air.”

Truthfully, I still don’t know. I don’t know if it was professional of me to accept all that so the drama can air or if it was unfitting for a craftsman at my level.

Still, there was something I needed to do despite whatever reason and that is writing the script, and truth be told, the writing was affected. I have no excuse. I didn’t have enough skills to find the best solution in any type of situation. I am bemoaning the fact that it seems I have exchanged my age for candy.”

72. This person asked about the epilogue scenes from the episode 24 script that I wrote about before in the first part of this series because she didn’t get the significance of those scenes.  I won’t translate Writer Song’s whole response because she answered this question already. I will just add the she described the epilogue scene here again as, “A day when it’s not raining, Choi Young wearing his cape, escorting the royals to Goryeo.”

I previously thought maybe Writer Song was trying to hint at another timeline caused by Eun-soo’s travel to the past-past with this scene of a rainless day, as opposed to the rainy day portrayed in the episode. But now I am thinking it was just another day on the road of the same journey in the same timeline as episode 1, with no special meaning to fact that it didn’t rain. Need novel now for clarification!

73. This person asked where Writer Song got her inspiration for Choi Young’s character. She also asked why Eun-soo was always so “bright.” This type of character is not very popular these days and she thought that if Eun-soo had been a bit more calm and serious, the viewers would have responded more positively.

Writer Song replied that foundation of Choi Young’s character was written as a man she would like to meet at least once in her life. The full character was completed by Lee Minho. As for Eun-soo, Writer Song wrote, “I like her. If she was calm and serious, the combination of her and Choi Young would have been too heavy.”

vlcsnap-2012-12-14-02h34m06s44

74. This person asked if the story kept on the same track Writer Song had planned from the beginning. Writer Song replied that from episode 1-8, the scripts were written as she first planned but for rest, she doesn’t really know. She will try to figure that out.

75. This person asked about the scene in episode 16 when Young said to Dae-man that Eun-soo “has no heart.” She didn’t really understand the meaning of that dialogue.

Writer Song explains, “Choi Young wanted to grumble at least once. His character is not light enough to say, ‘She doesn’t have any heart towards me,’ so I thought he would express his feelings as ‘She doesn’t have any plans to stay here.’”

vlcsnap-2012-12-14-02h35m43s248

76. This person asked if Writer Song saw a scene when she thought, “I made this character but Choi Young is very handsome in this scene!”

Writer Song wrote, “His eyes when he is looking at a woman…As a writer, if you get this type of actor, you have gotten a good deal.”

Yes, that is something that Lee Minho excels at. I particularly saw it in this scene.

vlcsnap-2012-12-14-02h37m33s69

77. “How did Ki Chul’s teacher obtain Eun-soo’s things?”

Writer Song replied, “Hmm, how did he? He probably stole them from someone. (In the initial plans [for the drama], the teacher appeared. But [eventually]…he was left out.)”

78. Question asked if there are plans for a movie version. Writer Song replied, “If someone makes it, I really want to see too.”

79. This person was sad that the last hug scene in the script was not put in the broadcasted version. She asked if there was any particular reason for this scene being cut out because she heard rumors about Kim Hee-sun’s husband not liking it.

Writer Song replied, “That’s not likely. Kim Hee-sun and her husband are not like that. They probably decided at the location that the emotions were not suited for a hug. It’s because the mood on the set can be different from the writing. The emotions present on location are correct most of the time.

To be continued with Part 6…Man, she answered a lot of questions.

Just signed it! I do hope they publish an English version that is a good translation of the Korean version, I’d hate for it to be ‘watered down’
Oh! Is there any word on when it will be released on DVD?

Speaking of the Faith novel, just read on Soompi that LMH congratulated Writer Song on the novel. LMH is just the sweetest!

“왜 하필 이분이었을까. 그런 생각하느라 많은 시간을 버렸습니다.
    아버지. 이제 찾았습니다. 너무 늦었을까요.
허나 그분은 이리 대답할 것입니다. 괜찮다고. 다 잘될 거라고. 이제 시작이라고.”
드라마는 끝났지만 소설 《신의》는 이제 시작입니다.
    송지나 작가님, 축하드립니다.

    Rough Translation:
Remembering back the dialogue “Why is it this person? Time flies when I kept thinking about it. Aboji (Father), I have finally found it but is it too late?” That person(ES) would most probably answer, “Don’t worry, everything will be fine, this is just the beginning”. Even though the TV drama has ended; but it is only the beginning for the novel. Congratulation SJN-nim*

Oh Joonni thanks for the info. I also want to have the book very badly. I swear I am gonna have it if the English version will come out. I’ve never had Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Twilight books but this one… I don’t know… I am just addicted to Faith. Despite the many flaws, I think Choi Young and Eun Soo had really hit my heart hard using that sword.
I can’t still move on Joonni. Never really started to watch new Kdramas at this moment…:-(
BTW thanks again for the Q&A. I am going to save it again and read it later. 😀

    December 14, 2012
  8. The thing about reading a novel is that you can read their inner thoughts and emotions when sometimes it is hard to discern from the actor/actress expressions. I would love to read the Faith novel in English.

those excerpts have me drooling for the full book. holy wow. dear santa, PLEASE can i have the English language version of FAITH for christmas? pretty please?

i hope LMH and KHS know how DEVOUT we are, as a consolation for the weak ratings.

@sophia ….never thought of that. when i sarted the signature drive, i wanted writer song and the publisher to realize the international appeal of FAITH, hence i asked ppl to include location.
but now that you mentioned it, yea! any idea on how we can let them know how we FAITHLINGS LOVE FAITH SO MUCH!?

      • I would love to let them know…

Thanks Joonni for continuing to do the translation of SJN Q&A. Love it! Waiting for part 6 🙂

“76. This person asked if Writer Song saw a scene when she thought, “I made this character but Choi Young is very handsome in this scene!”

Writer Song wrote, “His eyes when he is looking at a woman…As a writer, if you get this type of actor, you have gotten a good deal.”

I think Writer Song liked LMH creation of CY in my opinion CY probably would have felt different with another actor. I agree LMH eye expression is very compelling, he even smiles with the eyes and his facial expression is completely serious. There is ione BTS for EP16 when ES is asking him to let her go to GC home when he did that (smiling eyes while being stoic) then a few seconds later he starts to laugh.

Wow, the excerpts are tantalising….. i hope that would be an English version….or i would just kill myself halfway trying to understand all that Korean..or though I’m still thinking of getting both versions because some stuff can be lost in translation….as with all languages…you just can’t translate and accurately express some phrases from one language to another!

    LMH is such a sweetie….really……

JOONNI YOU ROCK!!!!! thank you so much for inviting your followers to sign our perition. thank you so much for translating the Q & A. my heart really goes out to SJN. She blames herself for everything wrong with this series even the ratings when in fact the director and SBS are the ones who should be held accountable for the low ratings.
She is very talented. the fact that she felt she didn’t do a good job, it still turned out well. WE are proof of that since we’ve turned into faithful FAITHLINGS! WE LOVE FAITH SHORTCOMINGS AND ALL!!!!. 🙂

    December 14, 2012
    • joonni #

I don’t know… let’s not confuse that we should hold her accountable for the writing, not just for the ratings (which the writing is part and parcel of). As much as I love Faith, compared to her early works, her writing was not up to par and I respect the fact that she seems to know it. That’s why I am looking forward to the novel so I can see her give it a second try and have more time and less budget restrictions to fill out her story.

Thus far, I am surprised but NOT surprised that writer Song is so open and willing to answer fans’ questions about her Faith script. In essence, by frankly answering all these questions about Faith, she is defending her work or writings which mean she puts the “lack” that was Faith as drama squarely at the feet of the director and editors; why else would she have agreed to publish her novels on Faith?

Like most of us agree, the novels will show a fully storyline and the inner thoughts and motivations of each character and do justice to Choi Young and Eun Soo’s characters and love story.

Throughout her Q&A, her response about Faith’s under developments in the drama is always “yes, I had planned this to happen but for whatever reasons, it was never filmed or was cut out”. I don’t blame her, in that industry it’s a dog-eat-dog world and she wants to defend her skill and integrity as a writer.
Don’t worry, writer Song, we know you’re awesome, but you’d be even more awesome if you publish your Faith novels in English!

Faingirl note: hmmmm…LMH’s many talent is his hot stare…conveying feelings that Choi Young would never dare utter out loud. Yumminess.

I signed the petition already…multiple times!!!

    December 14, 2012
    • joonni #

I do get a conflicting sense from her Q&A that she does feel like she was short-handed by the production situation as well some self-criticism of her own abilities to accommodate and do her job as a professionally. Rather than viewing the publishing of her novel as putting the blame at the director and editors, I see her giving herself a second chance to write a better story. Honestly, even the first 1-8 episodes when the story was going the way she wanted too, the writing was not a strong as it could be for someone at her level.

      December 15, 2012

Semilla my partner in this endeavor, just informed me that the first print of 5,000 copies of the FAITH book already sold out in Korea!.
The lines for the FAITH book signing was longer than book signings of veteran writers in Korea, that the publisher now thinks FAITH BOOK is reeally a good investment!
so here’s the CHALLENGE…..the Korean fans were able to garner 5,000 support. WE are international fans coming from 5 continents! We really should be able to at least match that number. It is our goal after all.

Hmmm…emails might not be that effective to be honest. Personally, I don’t usually give out my real e-mail to any online registration unless it’s a requirement. Then I just put down an email account set up specifically for online comments or shopping sites, etc… And I don’t usually open the emails they send me. I’m sure some people might not even register for viki like me (so I wouldn’t even get their mail).

              • SH #

FilChiNY — I’m hopeful we’ll get an English version of the novel. Your partner might have done this already, but here’s my suggestions:

-Publicity is important and you’ve done a lot of work on that (keep going and thank you! 😀 )
-I would inform the publisher and the writer of this potential money making deal. It’s time for the publisher to realize there is a mass international fan base for Korean dramas, so why not use Faith as a trial and see how many international buyers are out there.
-If it’s successful, think of the possibilities for more English novelized version of your favorite Korean dramas 😉
-I don’t think it would cost that much to translate the books, since writer Song already signed a deal to write them. Plus, if they do digital download, instead of paper versions, the cost to produce is probably lower (of course, they have to think of the logistic to prevent illegal download, but in terms of getting these books to the online distributors, that is pretty easy – amazon.com, b&n, google book, yesasia, hanbooks.com etc..)
-They should try capitalize on LMH’s popularity. The show might not have had high ratings domestically but it has a very devoted fan-base, and LMH’s face alone can probably sell a few books. *IF* they do decide to publish the English version, maybe have him or his staff sends out a tweet or a facebook message, *some* fans would buy the book for sure.
-Marketing. The publisher is in a unique position because the fans of Faith are demanding the books, so the publisher doesn’t have to spend that much money advertising the books to its international fans.
-All in all, this is a pretty good opportunity for them to try to gain more ground in the publishing industry.

I think the most important part is to emphasize on the possibility of having MORE Korean novels translated to English and reach MORE consumers. The bottom line is — it’s all about making profits 🙂

                December 18, 2012
              • FilChiNY #

yup. semilla is great. as for telling the publisher, this is the MAIN REASON we are having this signature drive. we shared our desire to have an english version of the book to the publisher. they were open. so this petition is the proof that would motivate them to actually do it, since this is somethng solid they can base their business decision. it is a business after all.
as for opening the possibility of future BOOKS being translated in english, that was my second reason for doing this drive. creating awareness of kdramas popularity. this is also the reason i wanted people to write down their location. it not only opens up the possibility of an english version but chinese and spanish versions as well.
frankly i feel that the goal should be higher than 5,000. i originally intended it ot be 10K. but it will take so much longer to accomplish. we are saying that it has a huge international following. korea sold out their 1st print of 5,000 copies. we represent at least 5 continents and we can’t even get to the 5K mark as of yet. we should be getting so much more than the 5K Korea achieved.
having said that, i do believe we will get an english version. as for the ebook or book and the marketing strategy, that comes later. the publisher would know how to market the book anyway. and once again, it is specifically for this reason that i wanted ppl to specify their preference. this guides the publishers on their decisions.
so the faster we get the signatures, the earlier we can present this to the publisher. so please spread the word. encourage family and friends to sign. i each of us can get at least 1 other person to sign, it will add up.:)

Do you have a deadline for the petition? I don’t remember seeing it when I signed up for it. I think it would add a sense of urgency (for people who are procrastinating to sign this petition) to have a deadline, and also you don’t know how long it will take to reach the goal. Having a soft (or maybe hard) deadline allows you to plan for the next step accordingly.

I would wait till the end of the week and then contact the publisher to show them the progress of the petition (by then if you reach the goal, great; if not, you can still say look in a week time, there are these many people signing up for it and we haven’t even spread the words far and wide (exaggerate a little 😉 )

In my opinion, the sooner the book is translated, the better for all involved. For readers, we get to read the story soon, for the publishers, interest in Faith will eventually wane as there are more dramas coming out everyday, so they should try to capitalize on that soon and act quick (or pali pali as they say in Korean, right?).

Just a suggestion and you might have planned that already 🙂

@gukja, i was LOL coz i see you everywhere. i saw you at soompi last night. i was thinking, she is so like me….all over the place.
did you see KHS new haircut with the bangs? i was telling WutHmone how i hated it. i have issues with bangs. unless you are 10 yo or younger, bangs are a nono, specially if you are over 30. it’s just my bangs prejudice. and as i’ve mentioned @soompi. peace to all the ppl with bang swho might have been offended.

Haha…yeah, like you I’m all over the place. I saw you over there too..continuing your mission to update everyone on the petition and working hard to get more people to sign :P.

As for KHS, I did noticed her new haircut. Except for the fact that it could have been longer, her bangs didn’t really bother me that much. I thought she looked cute overall with the new look. Actually, the first thing I noticed was the vibrant ‘color’. It reminded me of ES’s…LOL. Oh my, it looks like you have a lot of hair issues with our modern day Imja couple. You don’t like LMH’s hair and now KHS’ bang..LOL

I don’t think the gals over at Soompi were offended. It was just your honest opinion, which everyone is entitle to. Speak your mind I say 😛

LOL! Yea, it never ocured to me until you mentioned it. Yup I do have issues with their hair. I think it’s a conscious decision by the actors to reinvent themselves so they don’t get stuck in a specific role or image.

One of the korean books is the one I bought (YAY it shipped yesterday and is in NYC now) so probably there are international purchases on the first 5K books sold in Korean too. I am sure the someone in marketing there in Korea would collect that info as well….

I am a little surprised that after the message was posted in the WeAreMinoz facebook page and Soompi forum those signatures are not going up faster.

      • Hi Wendy,

I just got an email notification that my book was shipped out yesterday too **squee**
I’m grinning like a fool and I can’t even read Hangul…LOL. I am just going to swoon at Daejang’s silhouette on the cover..haha 😛 At least you can read some…are you excited?

The book’s been out for over a week. I’m actually kind of surprised that some excerpts to the novel has not been posted on the net somewhere. I would think a lot of crazy fans would have sat down and read the entire book in one sitting or over a course of a few days.

@gukja….SERIOUSLY?!!! LOL!!!!! i would pay a hs stuident to translate for me. pay the hs student babysitter rate. at least you get to kinda read it! OMG! i should have thought of this earlier and ordered the book. 😦 i don’t have the patience to navigate that unfriendly website. so think about my suggestion. ^-^

Got my book on Dec 20th! YaY Christmas gift I guess even thou I can’t read it yet.

I got a bit excited when I could make up the meaning of some words like Heaven’s door “haneulmun”, Heaven’s world “haneulsesang” and “Goryeo” or “iroehge” (iroke) on the few sentences I read. My lack of enough vocabulary is too big still so I am really hoping for the English version!!!

          December 25, 2012
          • @WendyM

Me too 🙂 I was squeeling when I got the packaged. Then I swooned when I saw Daejang’s silhouette on the cover. What a looney I am, because I can’t even read it…LOL Kudos for you being able to recognized some words!

I am still pondering as to why we haven’t seen anything about the novel on the net now that the book’s been out for a few weeks. Perhaps it’s the side effect of all the holiday activities? I can’t wait for the English version **sigh**. The petition seem to have plateau **sobs**.

@wendy m, the 5,000 first print that sold out in korea are most likely ordered by several bookstores and websites. . so it doesn’t mean that it’s really sold out coz the bookstores or websites might still have books in their stocks.
btw, what learning materials are you using in studying korean?
and yes i am a bit disappointed too that among the hundreds of thousands even millions of LMH fans, our number is not way up yet. 😦 i’m feeling the blues 😦

          @FilChiNY
“btw, what learning materials are you using in studying korean?”

I read you need to immerse in a language. It took me 6months to start speaking in English when I moved to USA but I had years of study so I knew to read and write quite well not the spoken part. so…Since it would take years to learn a language,I am using various internet free sources and youtube to speed up the acquisition process…

1.TalktomeinKorean has podcasts and free lessons (I am at level 3 out of 9 there LOL)
          2. http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAR6PIbgTNh132HWl3P0PT1JqIHH0de9A&feature=plcp
          3. Songs… I try to read the lyrics in hangul and understand them…like the other day I romanized the song “That man” and at least got 50% of the words.
          4. Dramas with hangul and english subs …eventually I want to be able to read the hangul subs fast enough while listening to the correct pronunciation BUT I am very far from that… my reading speed is like a first grader. So I watched 10 min by pausing and repeating until I got to read and listen (very frustrating!)
5.Local korean grocery store/food court to enjoy ramen or bibimbap while at the same time eavesdrop on conversations and see if I comprehend anything…

I am going to stick with it until I get to read well… I want to read that Faith Novel ….not hoping to speak but eventually right?

Do you want to learn? 🙂

I “congratulate you” on your quest for the language! I studied here in US, but I fluently speak both English / Filipino..I would love to understand & learn the Korean Language..still working at it slowly!!

Thanks Conjie008. I need motivation since I tried to decipher the excerpts only to find that other than 3-4 words in a sentence I couldn’t make up the meaning of the sentence yet. Boohoo

I do however can say “Hello my name is Wendy” in Korean now…웬디 (wendi)

Your way ahead of me..I can only say a few things such as good morning / thanks you and other phrases from “Faith”. I’ve learned a lot from all my faith fan girling. Sometimes I go to YouTube “kwow” for pronunciation.. It’s funny and it helps.

“that Man” secret garden? Love that song! i do want to learn. you seem like a person that learns languages easily. i am not like that. i struggle! i barely passed my French and it uses the alphabets. i think the first thing i have to figure is how they construct their sentence. we go by subject predicate style. then vocabulary. i might even go as far as studying their alphabets/characters. it’s mroe for knowledge than anything else. just so i understand a few things when i watch korean show. it’s difficult though. for example sorry is it miane or biane. i know i didn’t spelll this like kroeans spell it. i go by sound. it also doesn’t he;p that when they speak, they add some other expressive syllables to the words. shi or something like that. so i don’t know waht the actual word. i will check the link you shared. we’ll see. 🙂

            December 20, 2012
            • WendyM #

I don’t know if I learn languages easier or just that I get obsessive about stuff that sparks my interest. Blame Faith for this one!

If you have curiosity start with the alphabet, then you can almost read the signs in the Kdramas LOL check this ->http://www.indiana.edu/~koreanrs/hangul.html

I haven’t got to 반말 [ban-mal] which is the informal/casual spoken Korean. I started with the polite less formal 존댓말 [jon-daet-mal] and I’ve learned some of the honorific, most polite, most formal form with the ending nida, nikka.

I think actually 미안 해 [mi-an-hae] and it does sounds like “mbiane” is in “banmal” the polite form is with the “yo” at the end… 미안 해요. (mianeo). There is another polite form to say I am sorry is 죄송 해요 [joe-song hae-yo] but it would sound like “jesoneo” the phrase that I learn was 죄송합니다 [joe-song-hap-ni-da] that sounds like “jesonhamida”…since the “m” in korean is with lips closed almost sounds like an “b” … sometimes I hear “d” instead of “n” is also because of the position of the tongue between the teeth not behind the upper teeth like when you say “no” in English for example the word 네 [ne] for “yes” I hear “de” in Spanish.

I took a test and had a hard time when listening and trying to write what I hear. Failed miserably there so like I said feels like first grade to me. I think I am just happy if I can read+understand even if I don’t learn to speak well.

so what type of language do they use in ordinary kdramas like for instance in secret garden or city hunter? formal or less formal language? i’m guessing that the historical ones are a totally different form. it’s like shakespearean english and the english that we use today.ex. come forth – come forward.
wow i admire your dedication. i definitely am not on that level. aside from time, i feel i will be disowned by my family and chinese friends if i learned korean before i learn chinese! LOL!!!!! 😀
i did check the links. very interesting. some letters sound so much the same. the difference is so slight you can hardly tell. i’m having nightmares again with the nasal intonations! LOL! 😀

                December 20, 2012
              • WendyM #

I only kind of guess by the ending “yo” vs “nida” ‘nikka” if is formal etc.And if I hear no ending I assume is banmal.

I would love to learn Chinese. It would benefit me more professionally too. I do find Mandarin extremely complicated because the tone changes the meaning and also is not phonetic. I had 2 co-workers helping me out correcting my pronunciation. For example “Wang Qian” is pronounced “Wang Chen”.

I tried for 3 months before travelling to China and only was able to read the numbers 1-10, to recognize the exit, bathroom, entrance, hospital, bank symbols.

As for speaking…I only got to learn to say hello [Nǐ hǎo] sounds ‘nijao’, thank you [Xièxiè] and “I am american” [Wǒ shì měiguó rén] sounds like “wuo shi meiguoren” and then say “I don’t speak mandarin” [Wǒ bù huì shuō pǔtōnghuà] something like “wuo bu jue putunjua”.

I also learned how to try saying “I want to drink beer” [Wǒ xiǎng hē píjiǔ] something like “wuo shian je pishio” or tea [Chá] or coffee [kāfēi] which I used in Xi Ning and luckily I got it right since I got coffee. The beer episode caused more confusion and the waiter pointed at the menu so I pointed to Tsingtao. And also to say “I am sorry” [Duìbùqǐ] sounds like “debushi” which I recognized once a person bump into me in a hallway and was apologizing but then I could not respond!

Saying all that I haven’t given up on Mandarin just need to get inspired again. I also by learning some Korean words I noticed they have Chinese roots and are similar in Mandarin Chinese. One that I remember is “fire” in Korean in [hwa] sound like “jua” and in Chinese is [Huǒ] also sounds “juoa”.

i know what you are saying. i was complaining to my chinese friend how the spelling is so different from the pronunciation. Q=ch. LOL! 😀
the numbers i know too only because i play mahjongg! LOL!!!! 😀 and same words you know are the words i know too. i’m too lazy and complacent to really learn coz i know if i have to travel to china i would have friends or family to to the translation for me. but i agree 100% that it is good to learn because in the future, there would be more chinese speaking people than english speakers.
since we are on the topic of learning chinese, i recommend watching MULAN starring vicki zhao. it is an AWESOME MOVIE!!!!!! so you can learn and watch a great movie at the same time. they speak their dialogues clearly and slowly that you can really hear words. they don’t have it at viki anymore but they do have it at dramacrazy. the last line of the lead guy is such a classic in the same league as CY’s line to ES “If i am to have imja, it will be for life.” if you do decide to watch it, let me know what you think. 🙂

Joonni, did anyone ever ask writer Song if she was happy with LMH’s potrayal of Choi Young? There were indirect questions but I don’t think there was a direct question about her opinion of LMH as Choi Young, if she was satisfied with his interpretation of Choi Young. If she thought he was perfect as Choi Young or she thinks someone else might do a better job. I have not heard her say anything like that. Have you? Thank you.

    December 18, 2012
    • chikoku #

if i’m not mistake, there is some people who asked about that issue :

      55. How was the Choi Young character created?

Writer Song replied, “I set up the character, wrote the dialogue, and provide the situation, but it is the actor that really makes the character. Choi Young is someone Lee Min-ho created. ^^ So please ask this question to Lee Min-ho.”

      65. Which Choi Young was most like Choi Young? Writer Song’s Choi Young or Lee Min-ho’s Choi Young?

Writer Song replied, “The Choi Young I thought about…hmmm, I don’t even remember it anymore”

===She felt very satisfied for the Choi Young created by LMH, so she cant even remember the choi young she was created ===

      December 21, 2012
      • CallieP #

Yes, Chikoku, I read those comments too, that she does not remember the Choi Young she thought about or she said to ask Lee Min Ho about Choi Young.

It seems to me that she is skirting the issue and tip toeing around the question. Never answering directly.

However, no one really asked her what she thought about Lee Min Ho as Choi Young? Or I have not seen that question asked. And she never directly said that she was satisfied with LMH’s portrayal of Choi Young or that she was happy with his interpretation of Choi Young. That is what I really want to know.

She wrote, “His eyes when he is looking at a woman…As a writer, if you get this type of actor, you have gotten a good deal.” But she did not come right out and say LMH is perfect for Choi Young or something like that so I really wonder.

    Hello Joonni & everyone:
Just an update on our signature drive. I requested Semilla to email the publisher yesterday explaining the urgency of publishing an English version of the book. We conveyed the message that international fans and Korean fans are very different. International fans are not very patient. In addition, there is also a greater risk of having an unofficial translation of the book surfacing if they wait too long to publish.
The publisher, posted on dramada.com (this is writer SJN official website) tht they are looking for someone to buy the rights to publish the book in English. We inquired as to the possibility of them doing it since they do have an English division. As of now, we are still waiting for their reply.
Semilla just finished reading the book. She said it was pretty good and reading the book gave her the background info, that helped her understand the reasoning of the decisions the characters made.
    SPOILER ALERT:
Volume 1 of the Faith book ended with the scene where ES handed CY the bottle of Aspirin and told him him not to die.
And naturally they have to end it with one of my fave moments.
OMG! I AM DYING TO READ THIS BOOK NOW!
