Before I Transform into a Beast, Saying Goodbye to “Gu Family Book”

The phrase, “Biting off more than you can chew,” applies here. Days before “Gu Family Book” began, I sat down with Softy and she encouraged me to recap again because my puppy Lee Seung Gi would be back on the small screen. I knew it might not be a good idea because I just started a new job and moved into a new home, but she was very convincing, saying things like, “As a Lee Seung Gi fan, you have to do this because it’s his first sageuk after he didn’t get ‘Iljmae,’ and you have neglected your blog for too long. Also, you weren’t sure at the beginning but remember how good and fun recapping ‘Faith’ turned out to be.” When all that had not fully sold me she finally added, ” Just think about Sung Joon’s main of glory.”

Weeks later, she is singing a different tune and saying my health should come first. After regular visits to the doctor, my conclusion is that Korea is trying to kill me. My body is physically reacting to the environmental changes and it’s affecting my health and state of mind. My immune system is down and I can’t fight off the foreign germs and stressors in Korea. After Monday and Tuesday, I spend all week trying to catch up on sleep and can’t get anything else done.  I just can’t foresee going through this another 14 episodes. So it is with a heavy and shameful heart that I announce I am no longer able to recap “Gu Family Book.”

Screen shot 2013-05-13 at 12.28.37 AM

Softy and I discussed the possibility of her taking over my recaps but during episode 10, I had to help her with Lee Soon Shin’s lines because his military talk was too difficult for her to handle on her own. On each recap night, I need to get a reasonable amount of rest, but if I stay up to help her past midnight with certain lines, that would defeat the purpose of stopping these recaps to get more sleep to function the next day. This drama will only get more complicated with Gwan Woong’s plans to work with the Japanese so Softy doesn’t have the confidence to continue solo.

We bandied around legitimate reasons why I should stop and also why I should continue and the only conclusion my body can handle at this point is to drop the recaps. Just like I held out hope that Sung Joon’s main of glory would improve over time but it continues to be an embarrassment, I am going to have to face facts and realize my situation won’t get any better. What I need is time to learn my way around Korea so I can stop stressing out and getting sick. I need time to build a healthy routine so I can handle Korea better. The upside to all this is that by the time “Heirs” rolls around, I will be in better physical shape to tackle it. I will also have time to watch other dramas and write more about them, as well as about Korea.

Forgive me readers and fans of “Gu Family Book.” Even up to this moment of posting this announcement, I was thinking, “Just one more week,” but I have to be rational and honest to myself. I am sorry to disappoint the many fans of the drama but please know that in spirit, I am with you in my love for the darling little thing. I hope by the end both Kang Chi and I will be fully human.

Your health has to be the most important thing. No matter how much we love them, these are JUST tv shows. For the people who produce them, act in them, direct them, dress them…they are all-consuming because it’s actually their lives. For viewers, it’s different. Or at least it should be. Keeping perspective and balance is key for well-being. You are making the right choice for yourself, and I am certain everyone will understand.

as much as we are totally crazy for K-drama etc, I have to admit that the live-shooting schedule is totally insane for both the actors and the producers/crew. it’s unhealthy and downright hazardous how much sleep they are(n’t) getting – I work in a business where a total lack of sleep/all nighter is a norm every 3-5 days or so, and I don’t function well pass 12 noon on the next day.

      but I digress.

    • Agree . Re-align your priorities. A healthy mind and body is recharged with proper rest and diet.
No Worries… There will be many other interesting dramas to recap in the future
Thank you, with much appreciation for the love you and Sof dedicate to on this blog. Please keep us posted on how you doing.

Till then, rest and be good to yourself, Joonie. May God bless you, keep you safe and heal you .

Joonni!!!! Your health and sanity is WAY more important than recapping, seriously, because you only live once (unlike LSG dramas, with many more to come). if that makes any sense.

I’ve often worried about you and Softy, after seeing the times when the completed recaps are posted and I have to admit that it’s even later than when I sleep when I am on duty on Mondays and Tuesdays.

So take care of yourselves, please 🙂 I’m still looking forward to your insightful (non-recap) posts!

(PS) if recapping becomes a “chore” and a dreaded thing that is deterring you from enjoying the whole drama, then… what’s the point?! right?

  10. Hey Joonni – I was working on my 1n2d recap and didnt see your text till now. It looks like you stayed up past midnight just to post this. Hopefully you are sleeping now so you can read this tm morning.

Don’t feel bad – see how everyone understands and they are worried about you – no one is going to hold this against you since your health and well being are on the line.
Right now you might feel guilty and sad, but once your body is recovered you will realize you did the right thing. Remember – you come first so take care of yourself and you will feel better about all this over time. “fighting” 🙂

P.S. I will keep you informed about Gu and if Sung Joon’s hair gets any better – I am really hoping it does cuz then maybe YW can take him more seriously. I really hope they dont give Gon any serious lines with his current hairstyle cuz right now it only elicits laughter from me. 🙂

As a fan I will be around here. Live recaps must be really difficult so I applaud and bow to you and Softy. I can’t even imagine how fast you have to listen and type and on top of that how accurate you get it. (girls you are do an amazing job!)

It’s okay. Health is more important than anything. Thanks for all the effort that your have put in.

Without the recaps, will you be sharing your insights on the show?? Even if your comments or thoughts would not be posted on the next day, we will wait for your insights. Will that be too stressful for you?? If it is too much for you, than please don’t do it. Remember, Health is Priceless.

    Take care!

    Best Regards,

Thank you very much for letting us your faithful followers know about your situation. Your health and sanity, if I might add, should always come first. Only if you’re happy, then those around you will be as well.
We are all indebted to you, for your countless hours of recapping, scene by scene, word by word, all the way from Queen In-Hyun’s Man, Faith, and now Gu Family Book. We all really appreciate all your hard work and time, and droolworthy photos of course, and hope that you will recover in due time and get to enjoy your stay in Korea properly 🙂 See you around Joonni! All the best! xxxxxDe
