Written before live recap

After outing his secret, Tan has left himself vulnerable to attack from the world. Yet, at the same time he has become  stronger by growing in courage and character. It’s like stepping out fully armed into a battlefield full of enemy soldiers. Not ideal, but straightforward and sometimes the only choice.

It doesn’t look like Young Do is going to give up on Eun Sang anytime soon, which means we have another white (black?) knight by Eun Sang’s side. What this means for Tan and Young Do’s relationship remains to be seen.

This leaves Rachel alone by herself on the other side, and I hope the writer deals with Rachel a little more softly. The reason I didn’t like Rachel was because, while she had every right to be angry that Tan liked another girl even though he was engaged,  she was mean to Eun Sang right from the beginning. This wasn’t anger merely directed toward this strange woman by her fiance’s side, but at someone she considers below her. I don’t want to keep disliking Rachel, since she is also young and growing. I hope the writer leaves room for me to like Rachel and see her grow up.

The order will go like this. I can’t post updates while the drama is airing, unless the episode is moving slowly. I will be trying to capture as much as possible while I am watching the episode.  When the episode is over, I will go back to my notes, fix them up a bit and update part by part on each recap post while waiting for the torrents. If you can leave a link here, that would be great. When the full episode is available, I will fill in more blanks and screencaps, and continue to update. Finally, I will leave my comments.

Episode 13

ES goes outside to throw out garbage. She sees Tan standing in front of the café with a dazed look and tears brimming in his eyes.  She looks at him silently, feeling what he feels, as he struggles to breathe with the tears rising in his throat and his chest squeezing in pain. ES starts to cry, and tears fall on both ES and Tan’s cheeks, mirroring each other.

Eun Sang walks over to Tan and asks if he is okay. Tan doesn’t answer. She tearfully asks what happened. Tan reminds her of the time she said in the US she would hold his hand and run with him if it got dangerous for him. “Does that still apply here?” Eun Sang shakes her head, still crying. Tan looks devastated: “I see.”

Suddenly, ES rushes closer and wraps her arms around his neck and embraces him tight, standing on her toes. Tan embraces her back, relieved and comforted. Both cry into each other’s shoulders.

Esther and R are back at their house. Pissed, E asks R if she really didn’t know about Tan being illegitimate. R throws it back at her mom- mom should have checked before the engagement. E continues to complain so R tells her mom to be quiet so she can think. E says R doesn’t need to; she instructs R to just stay engaged to Tan until the time Tan and Won start fighting each other for Jeguk. They are bound to, especially since they are illegitimate and legitimate, respectively. They are each going to start buying up stocks and then the stock prices will rise. R is amazed and angry that her mom is able to calculate this even in this kind of situation.

R goes to YD. She yells at him for not telling her about Tan before hand. “Kim Tan revealed it with his own mouth. Saying he is breaking the engagement.” She asks why YD kept this good hand a secret- what does he plan to do now? YD replies he is going to keep R’s mouth shut. “I’m not asking you for a favor, but warning you. Sister.” R asks why. YD replies it’s because it is the best thing he has ever done so far, keeping this a secret till now. “Also, it is one of the most hurtful things to Tan.”

YD continues, “It seems Kim Tan has walked one step closer to Cha Eun Sang. So you should decide what you are going to do- break the engagement or not.

Tan brings ES to Myungsoo’s studio. He wants her to stay here, although ES object. Tan says her excuses won’t work anymore since she hugged him. So cute these two.  He sits her down on the futon, and ES feels a little nervous about the close distance. Tan asks where ES has been staying since the night she left his house. ES just asks why Tan cried, and the two go back and forth, neither one answering each other’s question. Tan finally answers ES, joking that he cried because penguins all over the world are going extinct.

Sounds are heard outside. MS is trying to get in, but Tan has already changed the passcode to the lock of the studio. ES wants to let MS in but Tan locks her in with his knees. Tan asks her again where she was- he was so worried he couldn’t sleep.

ES’s phone rings. Tan sees it is YD and sighs. He picks it up. YD complains that Tan always picks up ES’s phone. Tan just wants him to get to the point. YD asks Tan to relay to ES that she should make her SNS account public. Or else. Tan tells YD that there is nothing for him to see on ES’s account. YD asking if Tan and ES are friends (on the social network service). Tan replies that they are lovers. ROFL.

YD says to Tan, “You’ve let everyone know you are illegitimate. What were you thinking?” Tan doesn’t answer the question and hangs up.

Tan sees pictures on the table that MS took of ES and Young at the camp. He gets jealous so ES asks, You’re a *delusional jealousy* hopeful. (*Othello syndrome in which a spouse holds the delusional belief that one’s partner is unfaithful). Tan grins, saying whoever becomes his wife will be happy to be. Eun Sang rolls her eyes.

ES brings her books to the table, and Tan asks what she is doing. She replies, “What would a student be doing? Right, how would a 100th place student know?” Tan stomps over to the sofa. He just lays down at first to sleep, but then suddenly sits up to yell, “My answers were off by one line!” (Meaning he missed filling in one bubble on the scantron and all the other answers that followed were also wrong as a result.) HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!

Tan asks ES how she can work with him in such close quarters with her. Eun Sang shrugs. Tan sits and stares at Eun Sang with a smile on his face, a boy totally smitten.

Time passes, and ES turns around to look at Tan. He is sleeping. She whispers, “Have a good dream.”But Tan is not actually sleeping. He replies, “I already am. You are there, in front of me.”

Next morning, Tan and ES come out of the studio, late for school, and suddenly flashes of light bombard them. MS has sat out all night to catch them. He furiously takes pictures.

vlcsnap-2013-11-21-00h53m01s163 vlcsnap-2013-11-21-00h53m02s175

Tan, MS, and ES take the car to school together, sitting together in the back in THAT order. Ha! Tan threatens MS to to erase the pictures- “You don’t know but in the past I was able to hurt people using only a spoon. OMG, City Hunter reference!

MS asks if Tan and ES are dating. Tan says yes. ES yells, “Yah!” Tan points out that ES hugged him last night. MS asks what they did after hugging. Tan makes a kissy face that makes both MS and Tan smirk and laugh.

vlcsnap-2013-11-21-00h57m50s243 vlcsnap-2013-11-21-00h57m57s50

ES and Tan are walking side by side to school. ES remembers back when Tan used to walk before. Tan asks with smile on his face, “Why, are you moved since we have spent the night together and are going to school together? Wife.”

vlcsnap-2013-11-21-01h00m57s62 vlcsnap-2013-11-21-01h01m13s220 vlcsnap-2013-11-21-01h01m21s42

Tan holds out his hand her- “Take courage.” ES takes his hand slowly, but Tan waits patiently with a smile on his face. ES says, “I’m sorry I was so late.” She smiles. Tan notes, “See, you smile so well.”

Tan and ES walk hand in hand. The other students whisper, but ES and Tan keep walking. R sees them from afar.

Tan and ES run into YD. YD stares at their hands. He asks what they are doing in an educational environment. Tan asks ES to go the broadcasting club room first. She starts to walk away, and YD tells ES to answer her own phone from now on. Tan tells her to keep walking. ES asks both to not beat each other up, and she walks away.

Tan tells YD to not call ES. YD asks how Tan can reveals his secret with his own mouth, “It’s something I’ve been waiting to do.” Tan tells him it’s not too late; the other students don’t seem to know yet. YD replies that he is planning to, after building up its impact a little more. He ask Tan, “How will you clean up the mess?” Tan says he isn’t; he is just going to endure. “The person you knew well and the person I am now are a little different. So don’t act friendly or like you know me.” Tan walks away.

ES is waiting in the broadcast room. R comes in. She says she will show ES something. Tan comes in telling R to not talk to ES from now on. R slaps Tan. ES gasps. Tan calmly says, “Yes, like this. Bother me and not Cha Eun Sang.”

R tells Tan to shut up- he’s only a bastard. R asks ES why she was so shocked- at Tan’s secret or the slap. ES responds that it was R’s attitude- how can people like her say that so easily? R replies its because bloodline is the crown in their status group. “But new money like you can’t understand that, right?”

R faces Tan again. “She’s only at that level but you’re going to break the engagement with me for her?” She is peeved that Tan is not begging her to be his fiance considering his situation. Tan replies, “I’m sorry, but for me, it’s still not you.”

Upset, ES leaves the room. Tan’s gaze follows her so R asks if he is going to follow ES out. He replies yes and turns to leave, but R speaks up, wondering why Tan’s birth mom pretended to be ES’s mom. Tan replies that R shouldn’t interested in either his mom, ES, or him. He leaves.

Tan waits outside the girls’ bathroom that ES is in. He shoos other girls away. BN is passing by and asks Tan what he is doing in front of the girls’ bathroom. He tells her ES is inside so she should use another floor. BN complains that she helped ES out by letting her sleep at her house. Tan is absolutely delighted to hear this. He gives BN a high-five. BN runs away to tell CY that Tan touched her.

ES comes out and hits Tan for embarrassing her like this. Tan asks her to use the boys’ bathroom to cry instead. Pfft!

Tan tells ES not to cry since it is not her fault that he cried yesterday. ES asks that while she doesn’t know anything about business and stocks, is there no way Tan can be protected? Tan teases, “You hurt me before telling me to only protect myself, but now you want to protect  me?” ES bashfully replies, “Yeah…. So what?”

ES is taking a book out of her locker (the novel “The Solitary Room”), and CY comes to tease ES about Tan. BN comes, jealous. ES leaves, saying CY is threatening her. CY affirms, smiling, and leaves BN, saying he will meet her later in the cafeteria.

YS comes to BN and comments that ES is getting her claws into CY too? BN should just break up with CY, since he is only a secretary’s son anyway- BN is too good for CY. BN gets mad; she’s never considered herself too good for CY. Sweet girl. YS says she is just warning BN before ES takes CY too, and ends up like R with her engagement broken.

R is passing by at this moments so she stops. She asks who said the engagement is over. YS replies that all the students are saying Tan broke off the engagement because of R’s family and her mother’s remarriage. She asks if R’s mom is targeting YD’s dad next- she heard Esther took half of R’s birth dad’s business when they divorced.

R is peeved so she outs that YS’s mom is a room salon madam. All other kids hear, including Bo Na. BN is mad that YS made fun of CY considering her own family status. Suddenly, R asks BN to eat lunch together.

Turns out R has asked BN to each lunch so they can do what YD does to charity cases at lunch at the special table. Tan has shown up in the cafeteria after hearing from other students was is going on. CY shows up too, and BN tries to explain that YS made fun of him but R interrupts her to tell him the just let the girls do their thing.

Tan sighs and grabs another student’s plate with curry and rice. He asks YS to move. He sits down, whining he is hungry. Tan acts like nothing is different, when R asks him if he doesn’t know what kind of seat he is sitting in. Tan feigns ignorance- “The seat closest to the food?”

ES comes in. So does YD. He walks up to Tan, asking if Tan is going to break the rules (rules being treating the charity cases like this). Tan replies it is the rule that he made, so he is going to break it. YD replies that even if Tan made it, YD has been the one maintaining it until now. Tan shouldn’t be doing this without his permission. “You can’t break the rule. I will show you why. The seat is this type of seat.” Young Do pours the curry onto Tan’s suit jacket.

Tan calmly gets up and as he takes off his jacket says, “Until yesterday, this seat was that type of seat, but starting from today, it is a seat in which this could happen.” He throws his jacket at YD’s face, saying sorry to ES. He tells YD to follow him.

ES is not about the let this escalate and steps in and pulls Tan away. CY drags BN out of there too. YD and R are left alone with the other onlookers gone too.

Outside, ES scolds Tan for fighting with YD constantly- Do they feel okay after doing that? Tan complains that YD started it, so ES replies that YD is a elementary school kid- she thought at least Tan is a junior high school.

Separately, CY and BN fight. BN explains that YS made fun of CY being a secretary’s son, but CY retorts that just BN shouldn’t have gone down to that level too. And what YS said was all true. The fact that BN got mad means she’s been ashamed all this time of CY. BN gets mad, saying that is not what she means. CY declares he is disappointed by BN’s actions. BN leaves CY, angry. Aww, I don’t my cute puppy couple to fight!

Tan comes home from school. Dad tells Tan to leave, and leave behind everything he has passed for. He’s not going to hold onto a son who is has refused his father obtaining him “insurance” for an easy life.  KA tries to stop Dad and Tan, but Tan does what his father says. Tan replies to his father, “I know Rachel is my life insurance. But my insurance can’t become my life, father.” KA tries to stop Tan from leaving, but Tan replies he is not leaving but being chased out.

ES runs out of her café. Tan informs her he has been chased out, coatless and all. He needs to borrow money from her to pay the taxi he took to get here- “I’ll pay you back.” ES hits him for taking the taxi when he has no money. Pfft!

Inside the café, ES informs Tan that when parents tell you get out, they really mean they will forgive you if you admit you are wrong. Tan replies he has done nothing wrong; therefore, he cannot plead. She asks what he will do,then, from now on with no money. Tan says, with a very serious and determined look on his face, that he will study hard and succeed. ES suggests sarcastically, that he tries to get on “K-Pop Star” instead (K-Pop Star is a popular singing audition program in Korea.) Tan explains he can’t sing. He asks ES to call HS, MS, BN, and CY.

Ha! Tan has gathered HS, MS, and CY to ask them for house him, drive him to school, or buy him food. The boys are unresponsive.

BN has also arrived, and before BN can turn around to leave, CY volunteers to. Tan is pouty that no one is paying attention to him when he has been kicked out of the house. HS asks what happened. Tan gives the general idea, but not the actual secret. HS offers to let Tan stay at his house. Tan says no, thanks, HS’s mom is scary. HS agrees- he’s never been jealous of a guy before who has been chased out of his home.

HS is at home now, fiddling with his medicine bottle. He texts HJ, but her answer is short and no nonsense. HS’s mom comes in with a suit. She has set up the rolling admissions interview again. Mom has lied that HS was sick on that day. HS is shocked and mad his mom would go this far, to illegally put the son of the Prosecutor General- will this end only if he kills himself?! Mom doesn’t falter; she replies his threats don’t work anymore. She says she has confidence that she will not let HS give up on himself.

ES is at café, trying to find out where Tan is. KA shows up. She seems concerned about ES. She wants ES to come home- why did she leave just like that? KA asks ES where Tan is- did he come here? Tan shows up. KA wants to take Tan back home. Tan refuses. KA is worried that his dad will finds out he is here with ES. Tan says Dad probably knows because he put a tail on him.

KA asks ES for help to bring Tan home. ES volunteers to return to the Kim house- so Tan should come too. Tan refuses, only asks for his cellphone and clothes from his mom. KA refuses but as Tan starts to walk away, worried about her son, she gives him his cellphone and clothes. Tan comments he likes this “two-shot” of Eun Sang and his mom together.

ES’s mom asks how ES returned home with KA. ES explains that KA came to bring her home, and that she didn’t yell at her. ES asks what Tan’s dad is doing. Mom replies that he is holed up in his room.

Tan shows up at Won’s hotel room. He asks to be housed just one night. Won closes door at first. Then he opens it again.

Tan is eating dinner, with a smile on his face as he looks at Won. Won doesn’t look at Tan, though. Tan informs Won that dad hit him. Won replies that he has heard. Tan replies, “He didn’t say anything to do when you packed up, but he chased me out without any money. Maybe it’s because I’m illegitimate. It mad me kind of sad.” Won shows some response.

Won gets a call from Yoon. Yoon notifies him that when Ji Sook’s stocks in Jeguk, which Daddy Kim has control over, would be moved to Kim Tan (on his birthday), will cause the most trouble to Won. Won asks if this is based on the assumption that Yoon will also hand over his stocks to Tan. Yoon replies yes.

Tan asks if they are talking about him. Again, Won asks if Tan really doesn’t understand or is pretending he doesn’t understand. Won throws his credit card at Tan. He is not sleeping in the same room as Tan.

vlcsnap-2013-11-21-03h22m32s18 vlcsnap-2013-11-21-03h22m33s32vlcsnap-2013-11-21-03h22m43s117

Tan tries to book a room  in the hotel (Zeus Hotel where his brother is staying and YD’s dad hotel), but YD has drawn a  picture of Tan so the front desk could keep him out. This basically ends up with Tan being happy because now he has nowhere to go except his brother’s room again. Ha! That backfired on YD.

Won and Tan  are sleeping; Tan on the sofa with a smile on his face and Won on the bed. Tan asks if Won is sleeping, and there is no answer. Tan says, “I have a lot to ask you, hyung. I also have a lot I want to say. But you’re sleeping too early, hyung.” Won opens his eyes and says nothing.

Next morning, Won drives Tan to school. Tan starts to ask if Won can pick him up too, but Won’s look shuts him up. Tan leaves, smiling.

From his car, Won sees HJ going to school. Won starts to get out of the car but stops.

HJ introduces herself to classroom (YD, CY, ES, and Tan are here) as the teacher. She tells that that she heard that the kids here discriminate each other based on money. She will do it by grades. (LOL, she tells YD to drop his eyebrows here.) Tan recognizes HJ.

In the meeting with Yoon, the chairman, and Ji Sook, Yoon learns that the chairman has been spying on him too. Chairman tells Yoon to stop meeting Esther. He also instructs Yoon to stop his task of revealing the names of people who have been holding the Chairman’s stock underneath their name. He also tells Yoon to buy back anyone who seems like they will try to sell stocks to Esther. He also wants JS to try to win over E again. Chairman also tells Yoon to look into ES studying abroad; sending her to the school isn’t working. Chairman: “I forgot to add the variable of youth to the equation.”

At school. ES is happy to see Tan walk over. She even compliments on his looks! She asks Tan how it was with Won yesterday. He describes things that ES knows is a lie. Tan asks about his mom- did she drink wine again last night. ES offers him doughnuts, wondering if Tan is making her into his spy  now. Instead of eating his own, Tan takes a bite out of hers. ES hits him, but Tan complains that they are moving too slowly. ES reminds him of the kiss on the roof, which of course is ammunition for Tan to tease her about. ES blushes and leaves, saying she has to go to the broadcast club because HS is not here.

HS is at the interview. He isn’t answering anything properly, spacing out.

Tan calls HS. HS isn’t picking up. Tan is concerned. He gets a call from JS.

Tan apologizes to JS,  but JS is too angry. She informs that Dad and JS didnt’ lie all these years to merely protect him, but to keep others at bay. Dad fought hard against his brothers and their kids to get and keep this company. Now with it about to be out that Tan is illegimate, Dad’s brothers are now going to be wolves. This is battle that Tan and Won are going to have to block.

Tan is at the golf class. MS walks up asking why he is here. Tan says because he doesn’t want to show this face to ES. MS asks what kind of face. Tan replies, “The face counting the number of thresholds we have to cross over.”

At the café, boss tells ES that someone has reserved the entire café. YD shows up. ES doesn’t’ realize at first, but YD is the one who reserved the whole place.

YD tells her he had to go this far since she won’t do anything eat with him, answer his calls, and is avoiding him. YD asks her to make two drinks for them. ES only makes one. YD sits uncomfortably in silence while ES cleans up around the café. YD tells her to rest. ES ignores him so he spills his drink on the floor. He threatens to spill the rest of it if ES doesn’t sit down. She sits down.

ES ask YD what he wants from her. YD slowly answers, “You to answer your own phone. Responding when I talk to you. Saying hi when I catch your eye.”

ES responds, “Now I know. I know you like me and that is why you are keeping my secret. I’m sorry I only avoided you. Now I can only do one thing.”

YD swallows hard. ES: “I refuse your heart. I’m sorry.”

YD is silent. He expected this, but it still hurts nonetheless. Finally he says,” I’ve really been rejected. Can I get revenge?”

ES replies that while she wishes he didn’t, if he wants to he could because she rejected him.

YD says he can’t torture her anymore because it hurts him to hurt her, but he will take revenge on all others. He tells her to rest the remaining time he has booked the cafe for. He leaves.

In school, YD sits, dejected, with his head on table. He reflects on what ES said, and suddenly gets up. He gets on the school broadcasting system. All the students, including Tan can hear YD’s announcement. YD begins by saying he has something to reveal about Kim Tan. ES is running to the room. Elsewhere, Tan is walking slowly. YD says he will reveal the secret in 60 seconds. Stalling, he says, “Your enemy is not the person standing in front of you with a knife but the people standing next to you with knives behind their back.” He adds that this describes Kim Tan and his relationship perfectly.

At this point, ES rushes into broadcast room.  YD says, “Right now that person has arrived…” ES shuts off the mic. YD finishes his sentence, “The person I was waiting for.”

Eun Sang yells at YD, and YD points out that ES has come rushing since it involved Tan. ES is pulling YD out of the room, when he suddenly pulls her back. She demands that he let her go, but YD says he won’t because he will have to do it later anyway. YD: “I’m doing all this for just this brief moment. So you endure this.” Softly, ES says, “Stop this, Young Do.” At this Young Do pushes ES against the wall. YD: “Don’t call me like that.”

Tan has arrived just outside the broadcast room. Through the door window, he can see YD, and he realizes that ES is in there too. He tries to get it, but YD locks the door. Tan kicks the door furiously, yelling at YD to open the door before he kills him.

Inside, ES asks YD to open the door. YD replies, “When I said I would torture all those around you, it included Kim Tan. And me.”

Preview for Episode 14:

KA to ES: Stay in your room. Don’t come out. Rachel is here.

R to KA: Why did you come as ES’s mom to the parents’ meeting?

Daddy Kim: Why the sudden change in personnel?

Yoon to Won: You’ve started the war.

Won to Yoon: Decide. Whether I will put your name on the last line or not.

MS: What will you do if both you and Cha Eun Sang fall in the water?

YD: I guess I will have to save Cha Eun Sang and make her live without me.

CY and BN: Thank you for coming to Yoon Chan Young and Lee Bo Na’s makeup party.

ES: This is (can’t hear) service. (ES is delivering something for the party.)

R: I called for the delivery because I thought there was not enough drinks at this party.

Tan: Am I nothing to you?

ES: Because just your own problems are too overwhelming for you.

Tan: Every moment since I was born has been overwhelming.

Tan: Should we just run away? Do you want to go to the States with me?

It was no surprise that Esther didn’t think of trying to comfort or protect her daughter when they learned that Tan was illegitimate. Instead she calculated how this could be advantageous to her. It continues to be no surprise, then, that Rachel outed Ye Seul on what her mom really does.

Most of the rich kids’ problem is that they believe they are just inherently different from those less off. Based on this belief, they step on others, feeling every little insult their way bitterly but never sympathizing with those they cause harm to. Rachel’s purpose in revealing Ye Seul’s secret is not to teach Ye Seul that it is an eye for an eye, but with their social differences, it is more like an eye for everything.

The sense of entitlement belonging to the upper class in this drama is what drives much of the characters and conflict between the lower class and the upper class. As Yoon pointed out before, Esther and Won believe that people like him would keep waiting, just because Esther and Won are “such a catch.” Yeah, right. And Won continues to follow the folly, distancing himself from Hyun Joo. I think he has gotten it through into his head that Hyun Joo is not going to wait for him, but he maintains his choice to put Jeguk above her.

Hyun Joo and Won’s story does feel a little under-written in this drama, without a full and layered development into their conflict. We get very few scenes of these two, and when we do, they are short. It is a good thing that Choi Jin Hyuk and Im Joo Eun are doing such a great job of expressing so much in one look; otherwise, I don’t think viewers are getting enough from the writing to care deeply about this couple.

Won was really the last person I suspected that Tan would go when he is chased out, and yeah, I guess he was last. Ha! Still, it surprised me pleasantly because it shows that Tan just won’t give up on his brother, no matter how coldly Won reacts. Now armed with what Hyun Joo had said Won said about him, Tan can smile a little brighter in front of Won. Still, even though I knew how Won really felt about his brother, I wanted to smack him when he threw the credit card in front of Tan. Especially after seeing Tan’s dejected face when it had been eating so happily before.

Question: Was it just me or did Young Do look a little like he regretted his attitude toward Tan all these years when he told Rachel that it was the best thing he has ever done so far, keeping Tan’s  secret till now?  He added, “Also, it is one of the most hurtful things to Tan.”

This was a cute and fun episode overall with lots of interaction between Eun Sang and Tan. Tan was even more adorably childish with his teasing, and Eun Sang is also giving Tan a hard time about his mid-term test. I liked the little jokes here and there, with that reference to Lee Minho’s awesome spoon-fight scene in City Hunter. If I was drinking, I would have spewed out my drink then. I LOVED THAT SCENE in City Hunter. Also, while Tan and Young Do aren’t exactly friends, they are teasing each other way more and less painfully, since YD can’t keep attacking with Tan’s secret anymore. Thus, we get that hilarious drawing of Tan from YD, and YD’s jealousy that Tan and Eun Sang are SNS (social network service, like Twitter) friends.

The dot was connected today between what Young had said in the earlier episodes about Tan not being a real tiger and that is why is ran away. Tan isn’t a really tiger because he isn’t a legitimate son of Jeguk. As Rachel pointed out, being illegitimate or legitimate is really important for people in her status class because bloodline is like the crown. Similar to the way a crown will only get passed down from generation to generation based on the legitimacy of the relationship, bloodline is what defines how big corporations like Jeguk and RS keep the business within the family. Daddy Kim, Esther, Young Do’s dad, Hyo Shin’s must keep their eyes on their children to make sure they continue the legacy of the family and its business.

Ki Ae continues to grow on me, showing genuine concern for Eun Sang living outside the house. She’s hot-tempered and has said mean things to Eun Sang’s mom because she is mute<, but Ki Ae in the end is harmless. It puts my worry over another obstacle between Tan and Eun Sang a little bit to rest.

Tan learned through Ji Sook today that his actions have more far-reaching consequences then a young, 18 year old boy would have been able to predict. Tan was trying to help his mom, protect ES and himself, as well as free himself from the engagement when he outed his secret, but what he didn't know was exactly how it would affect Jeguk. I'm sure he knew it wouldn't be too good for future business to break an arrangement with RS international, and in turn Zeus, but I don't think he took into account other business enemies. The writer seems to be slowly but steadily building up a major business conflict soon, and I am curious to see how involved Tan will be. Tan was supposed to get stocks of Jeguk Holdings on his birthday which would have likely given him more power than Won, effectively making him looking like the heir instead of Won. But with Daddy Kim putting that on hold, I wonder how complicated the conflict will get with Esther, Choi Young Do's dad, JS, Daddy Kim, and Won all trying to gain or keep control of Jeguk. How will Tan figure into this story?

A part of me thought that the reason Tan helped out Joon Young before against Young Do was mostly because he was angry at Young Do, not really for the purpose of helping the weak. But after today, seeing the way Tan helped Ye Seul, I think I can say that Tan has truly changed, realizing what he used to do before to bully other kids was wrong. In comparison, Young Do doesn't seem to have realized this, even after liking someone like Eun Sang. Admittedly, Young Do might have just been reacting to Tan by declaring that the cafeteria hazing was maintained by him, but I doubt Young Do would have stopped Rachel from ganging up on Ye Seul. Because Young Do's love is unrequited, he is angry and trying to do everything he can to get Eun Sang's attention,  including torturing others. If it came to bullying another charity case to get Eun Sang's attention, I'm pretty sure he would have, even though Eun Sang is also a charity case. Alas, Young Do, you haven't grown up yet. Once again, he reminds of Goo Joon Pyo from Boys Over Flowers. The writer for that drama completely dropped the ball on the F4 red card bullying story when Goo Joon Pyo fell in love with Geum Jandi. I remember wishing that the writer of that drama would show Goo Joon Pyo as a nicer person to EVERYONE because he has been changed by Jandi, but alas, that didn't happen. I worry this will be the case too for Young Do. I think this is what happens when you don't have the drama written as a youth drama even though it is centered around teenagers. Youth dramas are heavy on character growth, showing how characters mature and change after they deal with difficult situations. The Heirs is a romantic-comedy so it would be difficult to expect such change in this drama for all its characters.

In the context of a pure romantic-comedy like The Heirs, Young Do's moments of vulnerability are enough to keep me sympathetic to his character. If there were more scenes of Rachel's  vulnerability, I would be more sympathetic towards her too. It is the moments of vulnerability that bring us closer to the pathos of the character, helping us to sympathize and relate. We saw before how much Young Do was moved by Eun Sang showing a little concern for him, so I can understand how hard he is trying to keep Eun Sang by his side. He doesn't have much to work with here, with Eun Sang flatly rejecting him and all, and his desperation is rising. I just hope that the desperation doesn't take him too far. I still have hope for Young Do- I think he will ultimately decide what is best for Eun Sang. Things are a bit more complicated for Young Do right now, with his mixed feelings toward Tan and his first love with Eun Sang. It took a while for Tan to really grow up too. I can wait for Young Do.

Perhaps the best the scene of all this episode was when Eun Sang took Tan's hand. And she apologize it took her so long. Holding hands, walking side bye side, they are ready to face the world. Before Tan was walking behind her, and when Tan had forcibly held her hands before, Eun Sang walked a little behind him. They never walked side by side. Now they are. Partners.

  3. Thanks Joonni. It really is a big help for me reading your recap before watching the raw video of Heirs. That’s because I cannot wait till the english sub is being released. Also, love reading your comments. Yeah, you’re right, YD character reminds me also not only of Goo Jun Pyo but of Dao Ming Si (Meteor Garden) as well :)…sorry I mentioned name that is not related in this drama. More powers to you.

haha… me too! YG reminds me of Tao Ming Tse too.. that’s why i like his character more than others.. ah.. but it’s impossible for YD to end up with ES..

Goo Jun Pyo and Dao Ming Si are essentially the same characters. Meteor Gardens with its F4 is written based on Hana Yori Dango, which is BOF. They simply are based in different languages and may contain certain differences in setting. Otherwise, they are almost just the same thing in different languages.

However, I also find that Kim Tan’s persona really resembles that of GJP, even if I have to concede that KT is a tad more “grown up” in the sense that instead of resorting to violence, bullying and flaunting his wealth and power, KT is more relaxed, more calculative and more mature (for lack of a better word). It still remains though, that both of them hurt deep and try to hide it, only using different methods. While BOF mainly thrives on the backdrop of the glamour of the mega-wealthy (plutocrats), The Heirs delves more into the gritty stuff that no one usually wants to confront, like illegitimacy, espionage, adultery and feuds over inheritance.

I read your entire post, and I want to point out something.. You said: “She’s (KA) hot-tempered and has said mean things to Eun Sang’s mom because she is blind, but Ki Ae in the end is harmless.” . Eun Sang’s mother is neither BLIND (inability to see) nor DEAF (inability to hear). She can both see and hear. It’s just that she cant speak; she’s a mute (inability to speak). I always go to your recaps for Heirs while I watch the raw episodes. And I’m really grateful for all your hard work you put into it. But I just wish you don’t mix deaf, blind, and mute. It can cause confusion for your readers who also cannot tell the difference between deaf, mute, and blind.

    November 20, 2013
    • Kumiko I think Joonni said that not with the real meaning of a person being blind, she tried to say that Tan’s gives to much importance to herself sometimes, and she fails to understand that’s she’s not better than ES and her mother.she wasn’t speaking about ES’s mother.I’m pretty much sure Joonni(as well as the rest of us) knows very well the meaning of deaf, blind and mute and she also can make the difference between them.

Dear Joonni as always thank you so much for the recap, for all your efforts and your dedication, we really appreciate it 🙂 you’re an angel!

I agree completely with all you wrote! This episode was a quite cute and sweet episode, after the last heavy loaded one this came as a fresh breath of air! I actually died a few times when watching it from overload cuteness, haha, so there you go!

I loved loved loved every single sweet and cute interaction between ES and KT, it was about time she took courage and held his hand, finally, she did it and for me too it was the most meaningful scene of the episode cause that is how I wanted to see them, fight together against everyone and anything that is against them!

I also I agree about YD not growing up yet, I really disliked him in this episode (well now thinking about it, there hasn’t been any episode I liked him yet), he is still acting the same! ES is an exception of course but that doesn’t serve for anything, if he is still continuing to bully and hurt others! He is hurt but he should’ve known better! I mean why even bother trying? ES in his face at camp admitted that she likes KT, he saw them holding hands together, so a person would think he has gotten the message already! What is it now? Hurting other people because she doesn’t like you back? That is really mean, I hope it changes, I want to see him grow up too and realize his mistakes!

There were too many scenes I loved in this episode, I loved the sweet, puppy, childish KT, he is just a child in the end! I was very surprised to see him go at his brothers too, I love that he doesn’t give up on him no matter how cold and harsh Won is towards him. It hurts him too to be like that to him but Won is blinded with being the President of Jekug at all cost and nothing else matters for him right now. He will regret it and I hope it won’t be too late!

Loved the scene with KT’s mom, ES and KT, awww, how sweet was she, being genuinely concerned about her, she is growing on me too!

That is all I can think of at this moment, I am excited to see how it will all play out in the end, there are too many obstacles but in the end I pray and hope it will be all good for everyone!

Jooni you’re the best as always
Plus i just want to share some thoughts with you guys if is that ok :
1- Did any body noticed the white line to be drawn on a dead body that keep showing in the school it was also shown in ep 13 behind KT when he was calling HS i think the directer has a reason to show it at that exact moment , i have a really bad feeling about that and i think i Know who draw that line but i will share it later .
2- Did any body noticed how sick was HS exactly Yellow Face i am really worry about him .
3- I read somewhere that BN’s long lost sister will appear in the next episodes i think i know who it might be , i think she is already there did you recognize her ????? YES it’s HJ KW’s girlfriend ,yes the orphan , and i really would like to see what dady Kim will do about that ?????
4- I think in the end someone of this HEIRS is going to commit suicide in the school and it”s probably HS , ??? although i like him , his character is cute and supportive to TAN but he really endured to much with his scary mom , plus he likes to direct movies and also like movies about murders by love ????? just thinking ,i hope not .
5-I’m also curious about what ES’s response to Dady KIM’s offer , it will be interesting .
6- Also i have a feeling that KT is really smart you heard him he only missed the order of the questions , from the beginning i know he was smart , how he wrote that essay in the US and he was really focusing on the midterm exam , but he is just holding back because of his brother’s request to not do any effort in studies .
7-Also i have bad felling that KT and ES will split up for a while just the time to build there life and be more prepared to fight the big fight so i think there will be a gap of time 4 to 5 years but they will reunite again for life ,
Ok i’m glad now that i let it out so any opinions ?? .

    November 20, 2013
    • Macoy #

Agree mostly, looks like they are setting up HS to commit suicide, or at least attempt it again. I mean they basically came right out and said it, he threatened it and his mom said she’s not scared by his threats. Really hope he doesn’t die, or maybe that is what makes KT fight even harder

I don’t think ES and KT will split up for years, maybe months, maybe she goes to the US, KT fights it out here and goes to get her.
ES will not take Dad Kim’s offer. Unless KT ask her to take the offer.

KT is really, like you said he hid what Won ask but now he has a reason to use his intelligence which will surprise ES.

      November 20, 2013
      • actually I do think ES will take the offer, because I’m sure daddy Kim will make her feel bad about the fact that Tan is doing all that mostly because of maybe she will think it’s better for his future if she’s going away from him.I don’t know, just thinking.and I also really hope HS won’t do anything stupid,I was really hopping that he will be the friend that Tan needs.but his mother is really horrendous, she didn’t cared one bit when he spoke about him eventually make a second suicide attempt!!!

        November 20, 2013
    • dramafan #

long lost sister…cn it be? seems so weird…but i hope so..i like that girl’s i think there will be a split with kim taan and eu sang..just so to make it sweeter when they reunite later…hooray for the high ratings !!!! three cheers!!!!

      November 20, 2013
    • How about this.
      1. HS make a movie about his fake suicide and send to his mother and frighten the hell out of her so she starts to listen.
      2. Daddy Kim will threaten ES, for the sake KT future, she has to leave, holding her mom as hostage.
      3. ES takes up the offer and go overseas and secretly meet KT and better still, CY and his father distract the PI from trailing KT. They graduate together and come back to join forces with KW and dethrone the old man. With the example from his little brother, KW stood up to his father and marry HJ
      4. R and YD end up together and kick their parent out of the company
      5. CY and BN live happily together and CY takes over BN’s father company
      6. ES mom and KT mom stayed together as sisters looking out for each other
      7. MS continue with this happy go lucky attitude and be a great photographer

Know is a long short but its good to let the imagination run wild ….ha ha ha!!!

I wonder how they are going to stop YD from making the announcement. Hope ES doesn’t do something stupid. I really like where they are going with Won and Tan, only thing is how far is Won willing to go. He has obviously softened on him a little but Dad and sevretary are still trying to pit them together. What does Yoon do now?

On a side note DAMN Lee Bo Na is fine.

While I’m glad ratings are up for ep 13, I think it’s mostly the audience for Secret switching to Heirs once they find Pretty Man not their cup of tea, and not exactly due to the plotline becoming better for Heirs so I’m not sure how long that would last. But I’m still glad though, because the cast and crew are being rewarded for their hard work and they’re filming in really cold weather (poor girls with their short skirts)

Though I can fully understand how YD feels for ES, I really hope that YD will become a better person and not bullying people to get ES’ attention. At the same time, I really can’t believe that people will actually bully another human being just because they are in a higher social status. So I am really worried that now R is becoming a female version of YD and start bullying the girls especially ES.And hopefully KT and YD will always stand up for ES whenever R try to bully ES.
I also like KA’s concern to ES when KA went to ES work place looking for KT. And hopefully KA will help out ES when facing R’s confrontation in ep 14.
And I really like the scene when KT was in KW’s room eating his noodles. I really hope that these two brothers can reconcile and fight against their father to be with the girls (HJ, ES) they like.

Joonni, thanks for your recap. You are awesome!
After watching ep13 i am really pissed with YD.
Can’t he just let go ES and KT together?
Love can’t be force and you can’t call it love when you keep hurting the person you love. Don’t understand why he keep hurting KT also.. the person who was in mistake was himself for not listening KT to come to meet YD’s mom when they were in middle school.
I thought he was already regretted for what he has done to KT when he warned Rachel to shut her mount for KT’s secret.
Can’t he just let ES and KT be together? There are too much obstacle happened with KT. Love that KT never get from his dad and brother but he’s still trying to be a cheer boy in front everyone. He is too much endure the pain.
Another person i hate is KT’s dad. I really like to see how KT’s Dad collapse. What in his mind is only how to protect their Company without caring about his sons felling. How can you be call as a father??!! He even don’t understand love by saying what is the importance of first love to Yoon Secretary. Grrrrrr!!!! So pity of you never feel love at all!!
Above all I hope ES will never let go KT no matter what will happen. She is the only one person who can cheer up KT.

I agree with you that ES is the only person who can cheer KT up. But at the same time, ES is also the only person whom YD can turn to when he is feeling happy or sad. It’s true that YD is really doing hurtful things to KT and ES and that love cannot be forced. But maybe, at that time, one doesn’t think of so much even though ES rejected YD outright.

Joonni ah – Daebak recapping. My Wed and Thurs nights are no longer the same. Thank you!!!

YD is so flawed but when he is sincere – mostly to ES – it is heartbreaking. Of course, it helps that Woobie is playing this character. KES really chose the right actor. The last 10 minutes of the episode was about YD, ES and KT. ES is not cruel, she did the right thing by rejecting him. There is no way to let him down gently and she did the best she could.

However, I don’t think YD is expecting her to accept his heart. He is simply holding on to someone that he truly cares about in a long while but clueless in his approach. ES had to harden her heart to be straight with him but when she softened her tone to ask him to let go (in the broadcast room) – the anger in YD became deep sadness. That last scene was really heart thumping. On one hand, you want to help KT open the door, on the other hand – you wish YD can have a few more words with ES without any disturbance.

Thumbs up for the acting. Solid episode all round.

    November 20, 2013
    • Blanche #

Ya, I also don’t think that YD is expecting ES to accept him but maybe this is the first time that he truly cares about someone when his life is all just about hating people. Which also explains why he is clueless is his approach towards treating ES and other people. I really like YD when he becomes vulnerable in front of ES. And you are right, on one hand, I really want to open the door for KT but on the other hand, I hope YD can have more personal time with ES….

      November 20, 2013
      • Sleepybird #

Somehow, I hope KES would have a scene where YD, ES and ES’s mum could have a home cooked meal together. His protectiveness would include ES’s mum and if ES is going away for a few years (which I think will happen), he would take care of ES’s mum in his own way. That does not change ES’s love for KT but it gives YD some comfort and warmth that he has been missing. He may not be with the love of his life but as long as he is part of it, YD would still be happier and find meaning to his lonely existence. I do have faith that YD will come out a better person by the end of the series. Afterall, Woobie was handpicked by KES for this character – she won’t let it go to waste.

        November 20, 2013
        • Blanche #

Yes, I really hope what you said is going to happen. Hope that YD can be a part of ES’ life even though ES cannot give him her heart. And hopefully, YD will feel love by having a home cooked meal with ES and her mum. And yes, protect ES in his own way and all the way….

              November 21, 2013
              • *olive love and respect must be earned, and so far YD didn’t do anything to prove he’s worth it.he can’t respect ES’s feelings for Tan,so why does he deserve respect? I can understand he’s hurt because she doesn’t like him back, but he should do something to change her opinion about him, instead of acting like a psycho.right now he forces his feeling on her,and that is not good ,not for him,not for anybody.he said that he can’t hurt her,so he will hurt the ones close to her.he should know that by hurting Tan,he’s hurting ES as well, because she suffers when Tan’s in pain.

One of my favorite scene in this episode is when KA meet ES and KT came. I really liked it when KT said why are the women he like uses fists… hahaha… that was really funny, seing how casually he talks about his love life with his mom. Also the part when he seemed happy to see KA and ES together.

I wonder what will YD do to ES? I guess the cut on his lips that we see in the preview must have been caused by KT due to the broadcasting room incident. Since the bigger war is going to start, I hope YD will stop being such an @$$ soon and help KT protect ES.

Just finished watching this episode with sub.. Omo. Am I the only one who got teary eye bout YD? He had to do it just to have a brief moment with ES. Love is pain.. Pity YD. He knows he have to let her go soon, but now he just want a moment with her.. Give him some break will ya ES??
I saw in preview episode 14 YD have some bruise on his lips. Oh no. Not another high school fight? (though I like all long leg-kicking ass actors! hahaha)

Joonni.. thank you for your recap. With your recap I can sleep sound at night. In the morning I’ll have to wait the sub to be released and watch the episode (while remembering all the recap from you!)
    Love from Malaysia.

i do feel a little sorry for YD, i think most of us have loved someone that didn’t love them back but we hopefully never acted like him. Just when you think he might be getting better, he gets worse. He has reason for why he is so screwed up but that is not an excuse. I can’t see him having any redemption other than if he jumped in front of a bus to stop it from hitting ES or KT.

one other thing, why does he tell R he is going to keep her quiet and then go and try to broadcast it to the whole school?

Nothing likeable about him anymore he is pychotic.

In my view YD has no intention to broadcast to the whole school. In fact that is not his whole intention. HIs whole intention is to get ES came to him. Basically he is just doing this threatening mode again. And by threatening and making ES thinks he will broadcast to the whole school, ES will come running to him. Which she did. In YD opinion that is the only way he can do to make ES notice him and listen to him. If you look back everything that makes ES came running back to YD is something which ES perceived YD will do that will damage KT or ES. And i pity YD somehow to make a girl whom he likes and loves so much he has to do that. He just cant give it up and its sad.

Ya, I agree that it’s really sad for YD to resort to all these threatening tactics in order to capture ES’ attention. I think he doesn’t feel good too. But that’s the only way otherwise ES is not responding to him be it phone calls, request for meals together, etc.

        November 21, 2013
        • but she has no obligation to give him attention or to answer his phone calls if she doesn’t want to!!!why is everybody talking like ES is some sort of toy and her only purpose is to cheer up poor YD?if he wants her to at least be friend with him,he should act in a different way.

          • Alina dear be a little kind to YD now!!! He is a sad case as he is not able to express kindness and consideration to others because of the kind of dad he has that teaches him to win at all cost even cheating like what he did to his own son. Its very sad and in reality there a people like that. I always believe people are not born to be bad.

Thanks Jooni for the recaps. I’m so looking forward to reading yours before even watching Heirs episodes,. Your thoughts gave me good insight about the movie coz I’m not a Korean. But I’m an avid Lee Min Ho fanatic and a Korean Drama addict at age 57, lol.

  27. Hey ! Guys ! I just saw the news that SBS is considering to extend 2 more episodes for heirs… I looked at the comments under the news & I found that most of them are happy for it (I’m one of them) but some are really against it… What about you guys? How do you think about it??? 😀

    November 20, 2013
    • Blanche #

I think the extension may be necessary as I find that the flow of the story is kind of slow.

      November 20, 2013
    • OUAFA #

Totally agree that extension is needed to cover up the rest of the story and the other couples too .

Extension for sure will help to haveirw time for the other pairing stories like HJ and Won, even Esther and Yoon and I want to have more Bona and CY too. I miss ES and CY friendship as well I want more if them.
There’s so many things that needs to happen for ES and KT so they can have a good ending. So a big yes for extension!!:))

I would be very happy if there is an extension of episodes, not only because I love watching the drama but also because it would help develop and get en epilogue to other characters stories!

I am very curious about Won and HJ, how will that develop, will it end or will Won have the courage to take her hand? Than there is HS, YD, R, and others as well, it would be a great opportunity for the writer to explore them more and of course KT and ES as well!

So if there is in fact an extension I think I would scream from happiness, so a big yes from me too, I hope it will happen!

    Soooo excited for tonights episode!!!

I hope KT’s dad won’t achieve what he wants but I do have a feeling that ES might make the mistake and fall into his trap cause he will make her feel bad and gulity saying what is happening to Tan is all her fault, I am a bit scared but in the end I hope everything will work out for the better!

I loved them staying together in Myun Soo place! I died laughing when they got out and he started taking pictures of them 🙂 And in the car when Tan told him about the kiss suggesting it with his lips and he started giggling, how funny and cute was that? I really think at that point LMH laughed genuinely and was trying to hold it in, I found that scene to be very real not like they were acting, LMH was really laughing with him! Myung Soo is the only character in the show that makes me laugh out loud, so talented, he has a gift for comedy 🙂

I felt very bad for Hyo Shin, his mother is a monster! How does she not care when her own child talks about taking his own life? How can she be so indifferent about it? I hope it will get better for him cause I really like him!

The ratings of the last episode were the best ever yet, I am very happy for to know that! Even though I watch it through internet cause I don’t live in Korea, I am happy for the cast and crew cause they work very hard and deserve the best!

I saw some pics for the 14th episode, so cute KT and ES together, protecting each other against the obstacles, I am very glad to see this development! Even if there isn’t any other kiss scene, I’ll be satisfied as long as there are scenes with them hugging, holding hands, kissing on the forehead, joking around, these scenes will make me more than happy 🙂

    So Heirs keep fighting!!!

  29. Thanks Joonni, you are a dear and always appreciate you making such a big effort for our enjoyment.
Ep 13 was fantastic with a lot of sweetness and humor, however I am very concern about HS. He is under alot of pressure and looks like he is breaking down. He does not seem to have anyone to turn to (he is always there for KT though.. KT better go look for him before he end up like the drawing on the floor) Hope he will run away like KT and carry out his threat (not suicide of course) so his mom can listen to him. Poor thing, my heart goes to him!
