Joonni’s Korean Pop Culture History

Joonni’s Top Ten Favorite Dramas

Why did I pick “Joonni” as my web ID? I like the “J” sound a lot and monosyllabic Korean first names like “Joon,” as opposed to “Hyun Woo,” for example.  So “Joonni” is just “Joon” plus the “ee” sound suffix that Koreans add when calling monosyllabic names. I also doubled the “n” because I like symmetry but I should have realized that it would be confusing for some people. People in Soompi and other places sometimes call me “Jooni.” Doesn’t “Joonni” look better than “Jooni,” though?

Remember, double the “o,” double the “n,” makes a happy Joonni.

Here you go. Did this quickly.

The three woman are holding an audition for their “show.”
One of them announces that a male in coming. The others protest that they are a girl’s only group but immediately consent when they hear that it is Ji Hyun Woo.

Ji Hyun Woo enters and he tells the women he came to audition. One of the women asks him what he did before and Ji Hyun Woo replies that he filmed a movie called, “Mr.Idol.” The woman is surprised that Ji Hyun Woo is an actor and asks him to do some action right now.

She describes the scene she wants him to act out. She wants him to pretend that he is letting go of a woman he loves.

Female: I’m going to leave you, Hyun Woo.
      HW: Okay. Leave.

Audience laughs. The woman announces that it’s enough for acting. She heard that he has a new album out. She wants to see how well he sings. She request a brief demonstration.

The audience starts laughing and Ji Hyun Woo tells them the beat doesn’t match his song. The audience laughs and stops. One of the women instructs the audience to clap really slow like her and asks Hyun Woo if the beat is okay. He starts singing.
(I laugh hysterically because the song and clapping is so off).

The woman comments that the song won’t be a hit because it’s too slow. HW laughs.

The woman tells HW that he as to pass four tests in order to be part of their group. One of the other women stops out and describes the first test as an temptation test. HW must not succumb to her seduction. She starts dancing around HW. (I cover my eyes in embarrassment).

When the dancing is done, one of the women asks HW if he fell for her seduction. HW replies that the last pose almost made him succumb. The woman asks for the other girl to do the last pose again. HW adds that she should do the pose facing the audience.

The third woman commands HW to answer her questions without hesitation. HW asks if she caught a cold. She replies that it is because she went to three different events before this.

The women ask how many older women he has dated. HW replies, “Three.” The women asks about how much older they were than him. He says, “About six years.” They ask if he can date “Kim Sumi.” (She is an old actress. In her sixties, I think.). HW replies no. The woman continue to ask HW who he will date if there is only Kim Sumi and Lee Young Ja (the largest woman there) left on earth. HW replies that he believes in the single life. The woman tells him that he has to pick one- if he doesn’t marry he will die. HW replies, “I’ll just die.”

The third test is extremely important. People have died after not completing this test. Lee Young Ja runs down to the audience and tells HW that he has to catch her. HW blurts out, “what!” YJ continues to describe the test. She is going to run from there and he has to catch her. The other woman tells HW that all he has to do is remain alive.

YJ runs and HW catches her. She yells that he has to turn her around. HW is successful.

Everyone is surprised. YJ informs HW that even the actor Oh Ji Ho (From the drama “Chuno”) had to hold her like this. HW snorts out laughter that he saw. (Seriously, it was so funny the way Oh Ji Ho caught YJ when she ran to him. He basically grabbed her butt). YJ tells HW that he is very strong.

The last test is dancing like them. They demonstrate. And he follows.

The women tell HW that he has passed. They ask him to join and he just nods goodbye and says, “I”m just going to go die now.”

One of the women is indignant. HW is trying to reject them?! They were going to reject him five seconds ago. The women declare, “Ji Hyun Woo. Out!” They start dancing.

  6. Hi Joonni,
I was wondering what you were up to these days after your last email about SUFBB and then Thundie sent me an email about your blog. I finally checked it out last night and read over everything. Your blog is wonderful and you did a great job with it. Like always, your translations are the best and your sense of humor really comes out in your writing. I have to admit I came late in the game and only started watching QIHM recently so I feel like I am behind in all the fun. Glad there is a great site like this to come to and rave about this wonderful drama. Really admire what you’ve done here and I hope you know that all your fans appreciate every “painstaking word” you translate. * But remember I was your first fan before anyone else. I loved our collaboration on OB. 🙂
P.S. I might have missed it somewhere, but why “Scattered Joonni” cuz you are so organized and meticulous when it comes to your work. 🙂

SOFTY!!!!!!!!! You’ve found me! This makes me so happy somehow. Heee!

It’s “scattered” because I really am. My mind is all over the place.

Organized and meticulous? Hardly. It drives me crazy when no matter how many times I read over my stuff, I find errors. It’s more like I TRY to be organized and meticulous. 😀

      May 26, 2012
      • You try to be AND you succeeded cuz I still remember how you clarified the exact meaning of certain lines of dialogue. Looks like you are continuing to work your magic on these recaps as well. Your readers are truly blessed to have you around. I am so glad to have a place to drop by and say hello now on a regular basis. Going to be a frequent visitor from here on so you might get sick of me. 🙂

    Thank you!!!

  10. Wow. If you will get paid translating all of these things, you will get rich! I mean I’m embarrassed to ask for a huge favor, like translating the whole radio program of Yoo In Na with Ji Hyun Woo (January and April) so… what would it take for us to have a translation of those radio programs? What could we do for you to return the favor of translating that flirty radio conversation of our InHyun couple? Or would I do something extra if I ask a translation of the MBC skit of YEH and JJH for Goong?

    Hi Joonni,

Fourth time commented on your blog :).

As many people here, I came to your blog thanks to QIHM. I enjoyed your recaps and loved your comments/ insights about each episodes, even though I often read it after I already watched the show with subs to avoid spoilers (except for ep 8-10). QIHM really drove me crazy in a way that even when I already watched the show with sub, I still wanted to found every possible recaps out there to read and savor the feeling. I remember reading the recap of ep 10 with a big grin in my face. Your squeal party was undoubtedly dae-bak.

I watched the first K-drama, Feelings, around 15 years ago. I guess it was the first K-drama ever aired on our country’s TV. After that, K-drama became really popular in our country along side with Chinese historical drama. Thanks to that, I think I watched few dozens of K-drama back to that time. And then at some time, we were flooded with so many K-dramas in every major channels that it became to cliches for me and I became tired of it. .

So I didn’t watched K-drama for a long time, and even avoided it. Until around 4-5 years ago I came back to the K-dramaverse, and started to downloaded and watched as many K-miniseries as possible. I was quite picky so I didn’t watch all the shows out there, but I guessed for the last few years, I have watched around 100 shows so far (and dropped most of them). I hated shows with too much angst and coincidences (that’s why I never plan to watch Autumn in my heart). And I can’t stand show with obvious illogical and inconsistent details. (that’s why I dropped many shows half-way.) My all-time favorite would be Time Between Dog and Wolf (I can’t resist Lee Jun Ki in there), Iljimae (yes, I am LJK’s fan), Prosecutor Princess and of course, Queen In Hyun’s man. I haven’t watched quite many sageuk yet (my reason was: when it comes to historical drama, few could beat Chinese ones. So if I wanted to watch something serious and historical, K-drama would not be a choice. Silly, huh?). Iljimae and SKKS are the two exceptions. Maybe QIHM, if it is counted.

I didn’t care about K-pop before and found the K-pop fandoms were pretty ridiculous. But earlier this year, after watching Family Outing and Strong Heart, I was drawn to Big Bang and now I’m their fan (become a part of the fandom *blush*). I also love to listen to IU, she is just too cute for words, and talented as well.

Besides, I’m a fan of Friends – American series. And as I already mentioned before, I’m a Haruki Murakami fan as well, although sometimes I try to avoid reading his book because I’m afraid that he will pull me to some parallel strange universe out there.

Oops, it seems to be too long for a comment. So I think I’ll stop here :).

    Have a wonderful new week!

Hi junnie83! I think your name and my name are pronounced the same, right? 😀

Hmm, definitely, Chinese historical dramas are more epic, wider in scope, and historical correct…as I hear. Are you a fan of wuxia?

Yeah I think our names pronounce the same (and it’s 36 not 83 :”>). I haven’t watched Chinese dramas for a while so no I’m not :D. Thank you for replying my long long post :P. Back to squeal with our lovelyyyy couple 🙂

    Hello Joonni!

I just recently discovered your blog because of Faith. I am into Faith because of GongNo but I love YoungEun for being loving people to GongNo and absolutely cheer for them as well :)). I can’t believe I am excited for live recaps now; I used to avoid them and wait until the recap proper but now I so look forwards to your Faith live recaps to see how the 2 OTPs work together to solve problems. Thank you also for the awesome translations of the BTS! The 4 actors are so cute together!

Now, I need to ask you this. When I’m on my iPhone and go to “Home,” I can’t see posts you recently make unless I go to “search” and type in words, but that means what I see after that is the select few that has the key word in the title. Is it just me or is it suppose to be this way? I just assume that when I go to “Home” I should see everything instead of no posts at all.

    Thanks, Joonni!

I haven’t written much about GongNo because despite being so dysfunctional in the beginning, after their confessions, they are so functional now, it’s glorious. But I love them just as much as Imja couple.

I fiddled with some things and tried the site site on Ipod touch but I can’t get it to show anything besides. But if you scroll to the bottom of the page when you open the site, you will see the “view full site” link. If you click on that, you get the proper homepage. Hope that helps.

        Dear Joonni,
I just read your review. What an amazing writing, what a beautiful analysis. I must say I do not know anything about Korea, I totally by faith fell into watching “Faith” on Hulu recently, and I fell in love with everything about it. I fell in love with Korean language totally and utterly. This review that I read helped me understand more Korean culture and cinematography, and I truly receive it as a gift. I love the innocence of Korean cinematography. I watched an American drama “Parenthood” right after Faith ended, and in the last episode there is a kiss between two characters that I almost couldn’t watch, it made me feel like it was vulgar, overstated, unnecessary, unloving. I guess what I experienced in Faith was such tender, yet such powerful portrayal of love that I didn’t want to see this forced way that I often see in our American movies. So much talking, so much doing but so little feelings at times. In Faith, like in Secret garden I felt invited into beautiful, complex, messy but above all beautiful world of love. Thank you for explaining and further endearing Korean culture and beauty to me. I am truly grateful.
